3 Math Department Mrs. Ragan's Algebra students have completed their STAAR test - and the math department all have high hopes for their scores. Students are now exploring radicals to help prepare them for geometry. They will finish out the year with a project in which students choose a career, buy a house and a car, and create a budget. For the last weeks of school Mrs. Walsingham's Geometry students will be reviewing area formulas and exploring solids. The Algebra + class is working on a tessellations project. Ms. Paschal's Algebra 2 students have just finished a unit on logs, radical functions, and rational functions. They will be focusing on 3 dimensional Algebra with conic sections. The Geometry class is focusing on solids (nets, slices, perspectives). Miss Lehmann's AP Calculus class has taken their AP exam and are all hopeful for wonderful results. Science Department With just a couple weeks left of school, classrooms are nearing the end of their TEKS material, giving way to opportunities for students to explore science-related topics of interest to them. In Biology, students are developing presentations on modern research publications that they will share with their classmates. In addition, on their own time, students are organizing a leaf collection that will be submitted the last week of school. The Biology End-of-Course STAAR exam was taken on May 5th and the science team is expecting a positive outcome for their students. In Human Anatomy, students are learning the urinary and reproductive systems. Students were lucky that "The Body Exhibit" is currently on display in Cedar Park, so anatomy students will be able to tour and see this exhibit on 5/18 as part of a field trip with the sports medicine classes.
4 IPC students will spend the remainder of May discussing the universe and all its complexity. Physics students will explore the controversial topic of nuclear physics and its application. In Chemistry, students have finished the unit on kinetic molecular theory and we will finish the year investigating characteristics of solutions (boiling point, acidity, etc). English Department English 1 and Pre-DC English 1 The English I students are working on a career project. They will be researching the requirements to get into the field they are interested in and what opportunities are in that specific field. They will be thinking about the path they need to take during high school and after high school to reach their goals. English 2 The English 2 students are finishing up the novel study of Anthem. Pre-DC English 2 The Pre-DC English 2 students are in the process of creating a bibliography for their social issues where they have to collect specific types of resources and create a MLA formatted bibliography. Students will then select some of these resources to review and summarize to create an annotated bibliography. DC English 3 The DC English 3 students are finishing their research papers using literary criticism over a play or novel. Research papers are due Monday May 18. Students will begin taking the final exam on Wednesday May 20. The exam will take 2-3 days. Grades are due to Palo Alto on May 18. DC English 4 The DC English 4 students are winding up their class. Students are finishing short stories and taking a test. Students will take the final exam on Friday May 15. Final grades are due into Palo Alto by Monday May 18. History Department The Social Studies Department has had a very successful year. The freshmen have been working hard all year in Geography. The sophomores and juniors have just completed their STAAR EOC in US History. The seniors are fired up for graduation. They have a 100% passing rate in Government for the first semester and all indications are looking good for Economics to finish the year out with all seniors graduating on time.
5 Counseling Department The Counselor's Office has been busy over the past month with scholarship applications, testing and preparing for next year. As of now, approximately 75 % of our seniors have been accepted to an institution of higher learning with others applying to the local community colleges and trade schools. Many students have been awarded scholarships. The 2015 valedictorian and salutatorian have been named as well as the top 10 honor graduates. MHS also has 9 students who will graduate with the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) designation. Twenty-four students will graduate with 24 hours of college credit, and 3 have enlisted in the military. AP and EOC tests have been completed for the year and TSI testing will continue until June. Athletic Department The Athletic Year is wrapping up. The spring sports finished up with the following: Tennis. All 6 varsity squad members advanced to the regional tournament. Golf. The boys team won the district title, while the girls team qualified for the regional tournament. Track. The track team swept the district meet by winning both varsity and jv divisions on both the boys and girls sides. MHS had 16 participants qualify to run at the regional meet. Baseball finished with a 10th straight district title and a tough loss to Blanco in the opening series. The softball team is currently in the 3rd round of the playoffs and will face off with Hallettsville in a 3 game series at TLU. Band The band has been very busy this last month of school preparing for upcoming concerts and graduation. On May 6th, the Band Boosters hosted the Band Banquet at the Seguin Coliseum. On May 7th, the band held its spring concert "Music Is All Around". The concert was very well attended. The students worked very hard to get this music prepared enjoyed themselves at the concert. On May 20th, the HS band will be performing at the "Teacher of the Year" reception. On May 23rd, Alex Rojas will be representing MISD at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition. On May 30th, the HS band will be performing at Graduation.
