9 Chapter 1 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the NETGEAR Model FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter, a 32-bit Fast Ethernet adapter card. The Model FA310TX adapter has been developed by combining the latest 100BASE-TX Ethernet and peripheral component interface (PCI) local bus technology. This guide describes how to install and use the adapter card and how to install the software drivers and diagnostics program. Overview The Model FA310TX adapter runs in bus master mode, directly sending and receiving Ethernet packets to or from the memory, using minimum aid from the central processing unit (CPU). Bus mastering allows a peripheral device to take control of the system bus and not rely on the central processor. Using the greater bandwidth and faster bus speed benefits of PCI bus, the Model FA310TX adapter is superior to a standard AT bus adapter. It uses a high-performance intelligent Ethernet controller that can transmit or receive data at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, can directly access the system CPU, and can transfer data directly between I/O devices and system memory in the 32-bit bus master mode. For flexibility, the Model FA310TX adapter comes with one RJ-45 port to support your existing 10BASE-T or the 100BASE-TX Category 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. The adapter automatically senses either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, and when operating in full-duplex mode, the network speed is doubled to 20 Mbps or 200 Mbps. Introduction 1-1

10 Installation Guide for the Model FA310TX Adapter Features The Model FA310TX adapter, designed to have high performance and to be versatile, supports many network operating systems and has the following features: Is compatible with the Ethernet IEEE BASE-TX, 10BASE-T, and NWay auto-negotiation industry standards. NWay auto-negotiation allows the adapter to automatically select the operating speed of 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, depending on the hub or switch the adapter is connected to. Supports half- and full-duplex mode that is made possible by NWay auto-negotiation. In full-duplex mode, the adapter can transmit and receive concurrently when the other party also supports full-duplex, providing a transfer rate of up to 200 Mbps. Allows for Plug and Play. You simply insert the Model FA310TX adapter into the PCI slot of a Pentium/486 machine, and the PCI system BIOS automatically configures the adapter. Supports 32-bit PCI Bus Master mode, enabling high throughput and low CPU utilization. Has one-step installation. A graphical interface guides you through the installation of software drivers and support files for all popular network operating systems. Has complete driver support for Windows 95, Windows NT (Versions 3.1 and higher), Windows for Workgroup, Novell NetWare Client for DOS, Novell NetWare Client for OS/2, Novell NetWare Server (Versions 3.11 and higher), SCO OpenServer, SCO UNIX driver, Artisoft LANtastic, and Packet driver. 1-2 Introduction
