1 Prekindergarten and Kindergarten List of Champions are Readers Activities The following is the list of CAR activities contained in the implementation folder for prekindergarten and kindergarten. Your chapter or alumnae organization should work with the teacher to determine which activities would be most beneficial for each student. You can use all of the activities or only a few; depending on student needs and the recommendations of the teacher. Students can be working on different activities or all of the same. Copy only the activities that have been selected for the students. There is no need to copy all of them! 1. Blank Page: Included is a blank page if students need more room for an activity or need to practice writing. 2. Book Cover: Have the student identify the front cover, back cover and title page of a book. Then, the student should draw their own book cover for the story they are reading. 3. Can You Hear It?: Students should look around the classroom and choose three objects that make a sound. Students should either dictate or write descriptions of each object (color, size, shape, etc.), how it is used and what kind of sound it makes. 4. Create a Book: Students should make their own book by dictating the story and drawing illustrations. 5. Favorite Part of the Story: Students should dictate their favorite part of the story to a mentor and tell why it is their favorite. Students should illustrate their favorite part. 6. Find the Letters: Students should circle all the upper case letters. 7. Let s Cook: Students should dictate or write the recipe for how to make their favorite food. Students should list what ingredients are needed, how much of each is used and the steps needed to make the recipe. Then, students should draw a picture of what their favorite food looks like when it is ready to eat. 8. Letter to an Author: With a mentor, students should identify the author and illustrator of the book they are reading and the role of each in the creation of a book. Students should then dictate a letter to the author or illustrator of their favorite book. Students should tell the author or illustrator why they like about the book or its illustrations. 9. Letter to a Friend: Students should dictate a letter to friend or family member. Students are encouraged to express their feelings for this person. 10. Picture This: Students should dictate or write the descriptions of three items in the classroom that are in the shape of a circle, square and rectangle. Students should describe not only the shape, size and color(s), but how each item is used.

2 11. Reading Aloud: Students should read aloud to a mentor. Students can use the book they are reading in class, or the book they have been given as part of the CAR program. 12. Reading Bookmark (Copy the bookmark on heavy paper.): Students should color the front and back of the bookmark; cut it out; glue it together; and write their name on it. 13. Retell the Story: The student should retell a familiar story to the mentor and have the mentor record the story as it is being told. 14. Special Day: Students should tell the mentor about a special day, holiday, or school event, and the mentor can record it. Students should illustrate their story and share it with a friend. 15. Story Characters: The student should dictate to the mentor a description of a book character they like most. The mentor will record it; the student will then draw a picture of the character. 16. Words Beginning with Same Letter: How many words can the student find that begin with the letter? (Choose different letters). As the student examines a book s text and finds words beginning with the chosen letter, the mentor and student should read the word, and the mentor will record it on the word list.
