The only rehabilitation hospital of its kind Just as the parts of the body come together to protect, heal, and give life, all the parts of Marianjoy came together to do the same for me. George K.
Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital Enhancing the Healing Experience Since 1972, thousands of patients have experienced exceptional, progressive, and compassionate physical medicine and rehabilitative care at Marianjoy. Integrating a naturally holistic and compassionate approach with the practice of rehabilitation medicine, the new Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, Illinois, is the first of its kind. The 175,000 square foot, $60 million facility has 120 private rooms and provides patients with an array of features specifically designed to augment medical treatment and enhance the healing environment. The Patients We Serve Each year, more than 72,000 patients receive Marianjoy inpatient care, outpatient therapy, and physician services. Marianjoy s dedicated team of clinical experts provides quality rehabilitation services to help patients recover from injury, illness, or disease in a soothing and transforming environment which supports the art and science of rehabilitation medicine. Each patient floor of the hospital is divided into treatment areas that focus on specific diagnostic conditions. Marianjoy treats adults and children who have experienced: Brain injuries Strokes Spinal cord injuries Orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions such as hip and knee replacements, amputations, and multiple traumas Neuromuscular disorders and neurological conditions such as Parkinson s disease, multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome Marianjoy is committed to exceptional care, service excellence, and outstanding patient satisfaction which is why we subscribe to a national patient survey to gather and process feedback from our patients on the care we provide. Our emphasis on medicine, therapy, research, and alternative modalities is enhanced by a team of professionals who believe that rehabilitation is about the connection of the body with the mind and spirit. It is this philosophy of holistic healing that distinguishes Marianjoy from other rehabilitation facilities in the nation. 1
Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital Compassionate Care in a Holistic Setting The new Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital is a testimony to the collaboration between the architects and clinicians who worked to create a spectacularly unique structure designed with patients and their families in mind. The hospital facility is located on a 60-acre campus rich with ancient oaks, native prairie growth, and wildlife. Floor-to-ceiling windows create a warm and welcoming interior which allows natural light to flow freely through the open corridors. 120 Private Rooms Large private rooms provide patients and their families a tranquil, safe environment with floor-to-ceiling windows to view the campus environment. Other features designed for the comfort of the patient or visitor include: Television with free access to movies, Internet, music and educational videos Wheelchair accessible private bathrooms Sofa that converts into a sleeper for the comfort of family members A safe to secure personal items Telephone with free local phone calls Free convenient garage parking 2
Welcoming Lobby The two-story main lobby is enhanced by a 15-foot water wall and stone fireplace, creating an inviting entrance that sets the tone for healing and serenity throughout the entire hospital. Meditation Room Available to both patients and visitors, a soundproof, softly lit meditation room promotes relaxation and centering. The room features a projected meditation mandala designed by expert Judith Cornell, Ph.D. Enabling Garden A central courtyard enabling garden gives patients the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors within the serenity of the hospital. Complete with soothing music and water features for sensory stimulation, patients can experience the healing effects of interacting with nature. Marianjoy patients can participate in horticultural therapy and practice navigating the various outdoor surfaces they will encounter once they return home. Authentic Labyrinth The centrally located labyrinth garden offers patients, families, and visitors the opportunity to use the labyrinth for meditation, therapy, and spiritual reflection. Built by renowned labyrinth expert Robert Ferré, it is an exact replica of the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth in France. Two-Story Chapel A two-story chapel incorporates handcrafted stained glass windows, inviting natural light to illuminate the room and provide a peaceful view of the wooded grounds. Ambient Music To facilitate healing and promote stress reduction, music has been customized for the hospital by music expert and author Don Campbell and can be experienced in key areas of the facility. Therapeutic Garden A therapeutic garden incorporates walkways of various surfaces that augment the expanded outpatient pavilion for patients and their therapists to practice real world challenges. The nurse took time to update us on my Dad s progress. She was very positive, caring and an excellent nurse. She was always there when we needed her. Barbara F. Rehabilitation Connecting the mind, body and spirit 3

The Marianjoy Foundation is in the process of raising funds to launch the new Assistive Technology Institute which will improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by improving functionality through the use of adaptive devices, tools and universal design. 7
Marianjoy: Full Spectrum of Care As a trusted partner during the rehabilitation process, Marianjoy delivers the intensity of services each patient needs from general rehabilitation to the most complex level of care. Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Marianjoy provides acute inpatient care to individuals requiring intensive rehabilitation and 24-hour hospital support. Our peaceful inpatient environment combines the medical expertise of our caring and compassionate staff with state-of-the-art technology to meet the therapeutic needs of each patient. One of the primary goals at Marianjoy is to return patients to their homes, but some people require additional less intensive rehabilitation. Patients who are discharged to their homes may benefit from additional outpatient rehabilitation therapy from Marianjoy professionals, while others may require medical care in addition to physical therapy in a Marianjoy subacute inpatient setting. Subacute Inpatient Rehabilitation Marianjoy provides subacute inpatient care to individuals requiring an extended stay with less intensive rehabilitation in our own 20 bed subacute care unit on the third floor of Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton. In addition, Marianjoy has partnerships with some of the area s leading subacute skilled nursing facilities. Within the scope of these partnerships, physicians, nurses, and therapists are available to meet both the medical and rehabilitation needs of all patients. Once subacute rehabilitation goals are met, a patient may be discharged and continue to improve their level of functioning through outpatient rehabilitation at Marianjoy. Outpatient Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, and Other Services Marianjoy outpatient adult and pediatric rehabilitation includes physical, occupational, and speech therapy, pain management, and driver rehabilitation. The scope and intensity of Marianjoy s outpatient services are designed to improve the patient s level of functioning based on the individual s needs and the referring physician s recommendations. The therapists were firstclass, helping me do things I thought were out of reach. Robert H.
Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital Compassionate Care for Kids Marianjoy recognizes that first and foremost every child is a cherished family member with parents, siblings, and loved ones who play a crucial role in their health and well-being. Through Marianjoy s familycentered pediatric inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs, each child receives individualized treatment. The Pediatric Team is led by Marianjoy Medical Director and board-certified pediatric physiatrist, Dr. Mary Keen, and her exceptional team of caring and compassionate professionals. Marianjoy s pediatric programs are designed for children from birth to 18 years of age who have physical or learning challenges due to illness, injury or congenital causes. The team s approach to rehabilitation tenderly addresses all medical, therapeutic, emotional, and educational needs of the child, incorporating social development and leisure activities into the rehabilitation process, while encouraging family and parental involvement. The ultimate goal is to guide each child back to where he or she needs to be at this stage of life learning, playing, and living life to the fullest.
Starting Over: One Child s Five-Year Journey of Healing and Hope In November 2003, Jenny noticed that her one-year-old son, Kevin, a bubbly, healthy normal little boy, was just not himself. Jenny felt it might be due to an ear infection and made an appointment with his pediatrician, but later her instincts told her not to wait, so Jenny and Mike, Kevin s dad, took him to the emergency room. A devastating diagnosis A CT scan showed an abnormal amount of fluid on Kevin s brain; he was transferred to a specialty hospital in Chicago where the family received a devastating diagnosis: Kevin had a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball. The neurosurgeon had never seen a tumor that large in a child Kevin s age. They gave us the best- and worst-case scenarios, explained Jenny. The best was that they could get it all, and Kevin would lead a normal life. The worst would be that he could die. There wasn t time to contemplate the future at that point. We just trusted what they were telling us and prayed. After eight hours of surgery there was positive news; they were able to remove 95% of the type A tumor. The tumor, however, was cancerous. After several weeks, Kevin s physicians determined that he was stable enough to begin rehabilitation and recommended Marianjoy. Mike toured Marianjoy, and although he usually has a strong dislike for hospitals, he found the welcoming atmosphere reassuring and decided to entrust Marianjoy with Kevin s care. Starting all over again Kevin s rehabilitation was going to be like starting life all over again. Similar to an infant, he was unable to move or roll himself over, let alone speak or sit up unassisted. I was scared when we arrived at Marianjoy because I didn t know what to expect, Jenny said. But the staff quickly put me at ease. They explained everything, answered all my questions, and were concerned not only about Kevin s needs, but also our needs as parents. Kevin struggled to relearn even the simplest movements. Eventually with therapy at Marianjoy, he learned to roll himself over and began picking up pieces of food from his plate. Progress was slow but steady and promising. Positive milestones in rehabilitation In January 2004, on his second birthday, the family received a wonderful gift Kevin was well enough to go home. By then he was crawling, could say a few words, and was using his hands more to pick up larger objects like his toys. He returned to Marianjoy for outpatient therapy to work on his balance, standing, fine motor skills and speech. In August 2004, Kevin pulled himself up to a standing position, and not long after, therapists had him using a walker. By 2006, Kevin had the strength and balance to walk unaided.
Creative therapies keep a six-year-old engaged Today Kevin still receives outpatient therapy at Marianjoy. He works with his therapists on cognitive issues, coordination and balance. Kevin especially enjoys working with his therapists while using the Nintendo Wii a video game for television which simulates a variety of sports with the use of a remote handheld controller. Using the bowling and boxing games, Kevin and his therapists work on his balance and hand-eye coordination. The Wii game is all he talks about! laughs Jenny. After every appointment, the therapists tell me how well he did and what they worked on, and give me activities I can do with him at home. I appreciate them offering me creative suggestions so that it doesn t seem like therapy to him. Thrilled with Kevin s progress The care at Marianjoy is excellent! Jenny enthusiastically reports. When Kevin was an inpatient, we saw the doctor every day and were able to ask questions and discuss issues with her. The nurses and therapists were very accommodating and allowed me to participate in his care. If he wasn t having a good day, they provided therapy in his room. Kevin s outpatient therapists are really wonderful, she continues. If something isn t working, they adjust. It s evident that Kevin s best interests are at heart. We are really thrilled with Kevin s progress. Recently, Kevin had follow-up appointments with both his neurologist and oncologist who were shocked to see his progress. They told me that after the surgery they doubted if Kevin would ever walk or speak again, Jenny says. Now he is running around, acting like any other little boy. In all honesty, I don t think I really believed that Kevin would ever walk or talk again either. Now I turn around and there he is learning to hop on one foot! The best place for rehabilitation When asked whether they would recommend Marianjoy to others, Jenny doesn t hesitate. I would encourage anyone whose child is in need of therapy to come to Marianjoy, she states. It s the best place for rehabilitation. We never questioned if we made the right decision about bringing Kevin to Marianjoy. He couldn t have received better care anywhere else. Medical Director of Marianjoy s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program, Dr. Mary Keen is board certified in four specialty areas related to pediatrics and rehabilitation. She has been named a Top Doctor by Chicago Magazine and named to the Best Doctors in America list every year from 1998 to 2008.
