2 Résumé Importance Your résumé lands you the interview TWC staff can advise you on your résumé so that it represents your skills, interests and experiences to capture employers attention We will cover what employers look for, formatting tips, what sections you need, what information you can omit, and we ll show you examples of effective résumés
3 What do employers look for? Fit/No Fit decision made in 6-10 seconds Top Left is where the eye goes first Education and the most recent position are important to employers

5 Overall Look of Your Résumé
6 Overall Look Make good use of your white space by keeping your margins between 0.5 and 1 inch Keep your resume to one page No photos, please! Make sure you are consistent in your formatting (for example, use the same font throughout)
7 Font Usage Use a pt font size for the body of your résumé Use a conservative font
8 Font Usage Use a common font when saving your résumé in Word (left). If using a less common font, save as a PDF (right).
9 Contact Information
10 Contact Information Make sure your full name is the largest item on the page Use a professional address
11 Contact Information Include your phone number with area code Mention if your address is temporary
12 Contact Information Be social! Add information for any relevant and professional social networks
13 Contact Information Put your contact information in the header section in Microsoft Word for easy updating
14 Education
15 Education Put your home institution first. If you ve already graduated, put your highest level of education first Use school s official name If it s not part of the name (like in the example) include your schools city and state
16 Education Spell out your degree name(s) correctly
17 Education Include your GPA if it is above 3.5/4.0
18 Education Put the month and year you will be graduating or graduated
19 Education Additional Considerations Would any of your courses help you stand out? If so, include up to 6 any relevant and unique courses. Boost your Education section with relevant and impressive items such as research projects, thesis topics and strong test scores Leave high school off your resume (unless you went to a school directly relating to your field of interest)

21 Experience List your experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first)
22 Experience Spell your organization s official name correctly! If you have a generic job title, precede it with the department name
23 Experience Be consistent in how you format locations and time periods
24 Experience 3-5 bullets per position Rank bullets by relevance to the job description No lines with only one word Avoid pronouns (I, you) and articles (a, an, the)
25 Experience Avoid contractions (can t, won t) and filler words (etc, ie., et al.) Use present tense for current duties and past tense for past duties
26 Experience Begin each bullet with a strong active verb that emphasizes a relevant skill. List only the highlights of your position Quantify
27 Volunteer Activities/Leadership
28 Volunteer Activities/Leadership Format and write about extra-curriculars the same way you would your work experience Do not include high school activities
29 Honors and Awards
30 Honors and Awards List honors in the Education section if they are all school-related Do not include monetary value of scholarships! Add context to honors and awards to enhance their value. Mention how long you have held the honor - for example, Dean's List (four semesters).
31 Skills
32 Skills Include any relevant software or electronic media you expect to work with but it is unnecessary to mention internet usage, though Mac OSX is okay. For Microsoft skills, list the specific programs in parentheses
33 Skills Describe language proficiency with words like Basic, Proficient, Conversational, Fluent or Native in front the language name
34 Skills Additional considerations Exclude any personal information that is not relevant to the position (e.g., age, marital status, hobbies) Avoid the phrase References Upon Request this is implied
