2 4. MANAGEMENT OF BODY FLUID SPILLS STATEMENT EXPLANATION OBJECTIVES PROCEDURE RESPONSIBLE PERSONS INCIDENTS

3 4. RISK MANAGEMENT: MANAGEMENT OF BODY FLUID SPILLS 4.1 STATEMENT All staff need to be familiar with the techniques for handling and disposal of body fluid spills. This policy is to be read together with the Hazardous Biological Agent Regulations referred to in the References hereunder. 4.2 EXPLANATION i. It is the duty of each employee whilst at work to take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by any acts or omissions at work ii. Dealing with body fluid spills may be a risk as such material may harbour hazardous biological pathogens, therefore the staff responsible for cleaning the spills will receive training on the procedure including safety aspects. iii. An example of dealing with a body fluid spill in a healthcare setting includes mopping up of blood and other body fluids. 4.3 OBJECTIVES i. To minimize exposure to potential pathogens in blood and body fluid spills. ii. To comply with Health and Safety legislation ( Occupational Health and Safety Act: Hazardous Biological Agents Regulations) 4.4 PROCEDURE Planning Disposable paper towels 2 pairs disposable gloves, apron, goggles, and mask Red micron thick plastic bag Absorbent hypochlorite granules if available ( granules manufactured for the purpose of ABSORBING fluids, which is distinctly different to the sachets of hypochlorite powder ( eg. Sintol / Biocide )used to make up cleaning solutions). Buckets and mops Implementation The process comprises 2 action steps: Body fluid mop up and removal Disinfection of the contaminated area The cleaner ( or contracted cleaner) should use one of the following methods. Method 1: If no hypochlorite granules available: High risk procedure! Page 3 of 5

4 Block off the area of the spill from passers-by until clean-up and disinfection is complete Wear double gloves, mask, apron and goggles Spill to be mopped up with paper towels and towels discarded into medical waste. Wash the surface with soap and water Cover area with paper towel and soak with a hypochlorite detergent solution ( 250 ppm if on a vinyl-type floor ( A stronger concentration will strip the polymers from the floor surface.) Any other area is disinfected with a hypochlorite solution of ppm Leave on for twenty minutes Dry the area with disposable paper towels Discard in a red micron thick plastic bag Remove gloves and mask and discard in the red plastic bag Seal bag with cable tie so that it will not leak. Put bag into a healthcare risk waste ( HCRW) container Clean floor as prescribed to remove stain, if any. Wash hands Method 2: If absorbent hypochlorite granules available Block off the area of the spill from passers-by until clean-up and disinfection is complete Wear double gloves, mask apron and goggles Cover the spill area with absorbent hypochlorite granules supplied for this purpose do not use sachets of hypochlorite detergent powder ( Biocide D or Sintol sachets used for cleaning solutions). leave on for twenty minutes wipe up the spill with disposable paper towel discard in a red HCRW plastic bag Wash area with detergent and water Remove gloves, apron and mask and discard in the red HCRW plastic bag seal bag with cable tie put bag into a HCRW red plastic bin clean floor as prescribed to remove stain, if stained Wash hands General All non-disposable cleaning materials used such as mops and scrub brushes should be disinfected by saturating with bleach solution, rinsing, washing and air drying, preferably in sunlight Evaluation Cleaning company to evaluate area for stains or slippery areas Report to registered nurse in charge that area is safe to use again 4.5 RESPONSIBLE PERSONS Nursing staff report spillage to cleaner / cleaning company employee Cleaner / contracted cleaning company employee cleans spillage according to policy Page 4 of 5

Blood and body fluid spill kit contents: Gloves x 2 pairs Apron Eye protection Mask Absorbent hypochlorite granules Paper towel Red bag micron thick Cleaning equipment bucket, mop, cloths, and hypochlorite detergent can be obtained from Housekeeping and must be washed and disinfected appropriately after use.
