1 Texas A&M University Central Texas CISK System Analysis and Design 11:00 AM-1:45 PM Tuesday & Thursday INSTRUCTOR AND CONTACT INFORMATION Instructor: Mr. Emmet Gray Office: None Phone: (254) admin office; (254) home via Blackboard (preferred) or TAMUCT Office Hours: None, by appointment Mode of instruction and course access: This is a face-to-face course that makes extensive use of the TAMUCT Blackboard Learn system ( The course syllabus, schedule, supplemental readings, class announcements, power point slides, learning modules, homework assignments, exams and other course related documents will be posted on Blackboard. Each student is responsible for the posted material, and should check Blackboard several times a week for updates. Student-instructor interaction: I typically respond to Blackboard within 24 hours except on weekends. I don t have an office, but I am available to meet with students at the university by appointment. UNILERT Emergency Warning System for Texas A&M University Central Texas UNILERT is an emergency notification service that gives Texas A&M University-Central Texas the ability to communicate health and safety emergency information quickly via , text message, and social media. 2 1.0 Course Overview and description: COURSE INFORMATION A study of the systematic analysis, design, and implementation of software systems with special emphasis on the processes and skills used in the first four stages of the System Development Life Cycle. Traditional and current methodologies, including computer aided analysis and design tools will be considered. Topics will be approached through project-oriented cases and projects, which integrate theory and practical application. Prerequisite(s): One course from CISK 313, CISK 330, CISK 331, CISK 332, CISK 340, CISK 341, CISK 342, CISK 343 or approval of department chair. 2.0 Course Objective: To impart an understanding of the role of the system analyst in determining and documenting user requirements, developing and documenting preliminary designs for systems that meet those requirements, and assisting in project management for the implementation of the design. 2.1 Student Learning Outcomes At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to: Explain the historical and theoretical foundations and concepts of System Development techniques Discuss the different approaches to systems development and where each is most appropriate Demonstrate an understanding of all the steps of the System Development Life Cycle and the procedures, skills and tools that comprise them Demonstrate an understanding of Rapid/Agile Applications Development as an alternative to the SDLC approach. Demonstrate basic skills in using common tools and techniques used in professional system development and design Demonstrate skills in managing projects and working together effectively in self-directed work teams Use common system development tools and techniques in analyzing and presenting results of analysis and design projects Demonstrate analysis skill to model business processes and extract requirements for IT projects Describe an integrated perspective of the complex human and technical interactions in the system development process as well as the approaches, tactics and tools which can be involved Gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complexities, organizational requirements and approaches necessary for success 2

3 3.0 Required Reading and Textbook(s): Required: Modern Systems Analysis and Design, 7 th Edition Jeffrey A. Hoffer, Joey George, Joe Valacich Prentice Hall ISBN: Note: An electronic version of the book may be available. Note: A student of this institution is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from a universityaffiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Supplemental Material: The course textbook will be supplemented with other materials including handouts, oral presentations, industry articles, research paper readings, case studies, Power Point presentations etc. Required Reading: The student is expected to read and review all material presented in the assigned chapter prior to class. 3

4 4.0 Course Requirements: COURSE REQUIREMENTS Examinations: There will be two exams, one midterm and one final exam. Each is worth points. The midterm covers chapters 1-7 and the final covers chapters Exams will be taken during class and will be timed. Quizzes: There will be 5 take-home small quizzes. Each quiz is worth 6.75 points. The exams will be available via Blackboard for a short period of time (typically 1 week), be completed in one session, and be will timed. Assignments: There will be 5 short writing assignments. Each assignment will be worth 6.75 points. Assignments will be typically be available on Blackboard for 2 weeks. Multiple submissions are typically allowed. 5.0 Grading Criteria Rubric and Conversion Exams & Quizzes: Exams and quizzes will receive a numeric score (0-100) each. Typically this is 11:59 PM on Thursday. A 5 point penalty will be assessed for each day a requirement is late. 7 TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS AND SUPPORT 7.0 Technology Requirements This course will require that documents be created in Microsoft Word format (*.doc or *.docx) and in Microsoft Visio format (*.vsd or *.vsdx) Students may be able to obtain copies of Microsoft products through the University (see: This course will use the TAMUCT Blackboard Learn learning management system. 10 COURSE AND UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES AND POLICIES 9.0 Drop Policy If you discover that you need to drop this class, you must go to the Records Office and ask for the necessary paperwork. Professors cannot drop students; this is always the responsibility of the student. The record s office will provide a deadline for which the form must be returned, completed and signed. Once you return the signed form to the records office and wait 24 hours, you must go into Warrior Web and confirm that you are no longer enrolled. Should you still be enrolled, FOLLOW-UP with the records office immediately? You are to attend class until the procedure is complete to avoid penalty for absence. This tool provides tutoring in Mathematics, Writing, Career Writing, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Spanish, Calculus, and Statistics. To access Tutor.com, click on Library Services The University Library provides many services in support of research across campus and at a distance. We offer over 200 electronic databases containing approximately 250,000 ebooks and 82,000 journals, in addition to the 72,000 items in our print collection, which can be mailed to students who live more than 50 miles from campus. Research guides for each subject taught at TAMUCT are available through our website to help students navigate these resources. On-campus, the library offers technology including cameras, laptops, microphones, webcams, and digital sound recorders. Research assistance from a librarian is also available twenty-four hours a day through our online chat service, and at the reference desk when the library is open. Research sessions can be scheduled for more comprehensive assistance, and may take place on Skype or in-person at the library. Assistance may cover many topics, including how to find articles in peer-reviewed journals, how to cite resources, and how to piece together research for written assignments.
