1 Dear Community Members, It s hard to believe we are already over a week into 2015! Cornelia has become known as a hub of event activity the last few years with the celebration of long-time events as well as newer festivities. We have another great year planned for the city in 2015 and need community support and involvement to build and grow these events even more. Events in 2014 brought over 40,000 visitors to our city and your participation in these events shows your commitment to this community and helps enhance the quality of life for local residents and provide memorable experiences for visitors. Don t miss your chance to be part of the excitement in 2015 and join forces with the Cornelia Downtown Development Authority & the Cornelia Hospitality & Tourism board in hosting the following great events. Here s what s in store for Cornelia through the end of 2015: 4 th Annual Casino Night Fundraiser Bootleg Bash, A Night at the Roaring 20s Speakeasy Cornelia Community House Saturday, March 7, PM Step back in time to the roaring 20s and the local Speakeasy! Enjoy this fun themed gala at the gaming tables in your swankiest flapper and dapper Dan attire as you sip a Sidecar. This fundraising event benefits the Downtown Development Authority s Façade Grant Fund. The fund is distributed to local businesses to assist with improvements to commercial property exteriors. The board hopes to raise enough funds this year to add a second category to the fund for interior improvements. Improvements of facades and interiors of the downtown buildings improves the overall aesthetics of the City and helps to boost economic development. See attached event sheet for all the details. Cornelia Apple Blossom BBQ Festival- April 17 th & 18 th at Cornelia City Park Almost 50 BBQ teams will compete again this year for the prize pot of over $10,000. This event draws thousands of BBQ lovers to the area for the weekend. The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, is proclaimed and state championship by the Governor and the winner is invited to the American Royal Cook-Off for the year. Aside from the professional BBQ contest, amateur cooks and budding pitmasters are invited to participate in our backyard and Kid s Q divisions, live entertainment & kid fun all weekend, food demos, vendors and other food related activities take place all weekend for chances to sample competition style food. The event will make a venue change to the Cornelia City Park, Amphitheater and Community House for Multiple partnership levels are available details on attached event sheet. Friday Night Flicks April 17, May 1, June 12, July 17, & Aug 1 (Back to School Bash) The Friday Night Flicks outdoor movie series is a collaborative effort between Cornelia Main Street/Downtown Development Authority & Clarkesville Main Street. This joint project benefits both communities by alternating each month back and forth between the cities offering a free recent blockbuster. Partnership in this category includes the publicity and perks listed below in both Clarkesville & Cornelia. Advertisement displayed on pre-movie slide show able to be changed monthly. Recognition as a sponsor in all event-related press releases. Opportunity to set up table or display booth at event. Name listing on Friday Night Flicks banner displayed at movie location. Logo listing on movie posters and rack cards. Presence on Facebook page. Cornelia Summer Concert Series at Cornelia City Park Amphitheater Last Friday of each month from May to July* Free Friday night concerts in the park featuring local/regional musical acts. Several partnership levels available for the concert series. 2 Habersham County Back to School Bash August 1 st The Cornelia Main Street/DDA again joins forces with Clarkesville Main Street and numerous community groups, businesses and local churches to help provide assistance with school supplies for families in need. For the last 3 years, over 1,500 children from Pre-K to high school have been provided with backpacks and supplies to get them off to a successful school year. Along with this community need, a FREE family fun day is provided including games, crafts, swimming and entertainment. Several local hair stylists donate their time to provide free haircuts and local dentists and eye doctors provide free screening and supplies. This is a great way to give back to the community. School supplies, food and food service supplies are needed as donations or financial support for purchasing needed supplies. Hair stylists willing to donate time for haircuts and any dentists or doctors willing to donate time for general health screening or provide samples to give to students are welcome! Contact our offices or Clarkesville Main Street if you are interested in participating in this event. 28 th Annual Big Red Apple Festival Saturday, October 10, 2015 This long standing North Georgia tradition continues to draw crowds from all over the southeast to Cornelia for a weekend of fall fun in one of the most beautiful areas of the state. This event is just one of many during the fall season that continues to boost tourism economy for Habersham County. See attached sheet for partnership possibilities. Christmas in Cornelia A Cornelia tradition that begins on Thanksgiving night as the Cornelia City Park Holiday Light Spectacular is lit and continues with various other activities like ice skating, hayrides through the lights, visits with Santa, Holiday Market and more throughout the holiday season saw record numbers in attendance all week for activities and thousands drove through to see the lights for the month. 8 The City of Cornelia, Cornelia Hospitality & Tourism Board and the Cornelia DDA are bringing back one of the best family Christmas celebrations in North Georgia and we could use your help! The success and excitement for this 4 th year event keeps growing. The month long Christmas in Cornelia starts with the lighting of the FREE Lighted Christmas display at Cornelia City Park starting on Thanksgiving night and continuing until New Year s Day. On Dec 5 th, the city will host the Habersham County Christmas Parade and the week before Christmas, the historic Community House & City Park will be the host site for ice skating again in the park & hayrides through the lights (minimal fee), on the weekend nights there will also be FREE visits with Santa, FREE fun activities in the Elf Workshop for Kids, strolling through the Christmas Market for last minute gifts, cocoa & S mores by the fire pits, and more.
