4 Did You Know??? The Rhode Island Public Works Association offers several scholarship opportunities. College Scholarship Our RIPWA College Scholarship is open to all members, children of members or grandchildren of members in good standing. After careful consideration our board approved the following 2012 college scholarships. Alexandra Smith Holly Gagnon Alyssa Gelfuso Holly Ratcliffe Sara Cathcart Municipal Scholarship This years approved municipal scholarships were Coventry DPW received a cash scholarship to purchase safety equipment. Foster DPW received a laptop. See pic on pg 8. In these difficult economic times, the Rhode Island Public Works Association will consider requests from municipalities for items that will help make their departments safer, more productive, technologically proficient and overall a better place to work. Endowment Scholarship An endowed scholarship is a major gift to a college or university used to fund scholarships. The feature that most distinguishes endowed scholarships from other types of donations is that the capital in the endowed scholarship gift is preserved so that the gift can last indefinitely. RIPWA has set up an endowment scholarship with the University of Rhode Island. See letter to the left for more information on this years 2012 RIPWA endowment scholarship. Chuck Smith presented a HP Laptop and Printer to the Scituate DPW on 3/1/11 to be used by mechanics Dean Randall and Curtis Lotter to diagnose and maintain the fleet. Dale Langlais, Scituate DPW Director applied for the grant though the Rhode Island Public Works Association Municipal Scholarship. 4
5 RIPWA Endowment Scholarship continued... December 20, 2011 THE UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION 79 UPPER COLLEGE ROAD, KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND FAX Mr. Jeff Cathcart RI Public Works Association 78 Burnt Hill Road Hope, RI Dear Mr. Cathcart, As the holiday season is upon us, we take time to reflect on our good fortune at URI. Benefactors like you have given the university much to appreciate and even more to showcase for many years to come. Most recently, due to your direct support, a student s financial responsibility was lessened and his or her dream of earning a college degree has come closer to becoming a reality. On behalf of the University of Rhode Island and the URI Foundation, I am glad to report to you on the RI Public Works Endowment Scholarship award for the academic year. Recently, this scholarship was awarded to Erik C. Stamp, a Civil Engineering major from Coventry, RI. The level and breadth of support we receive from our alumni and friends makes a significant impact on the overall academic experience here at URI, the effects of which are felt across the campus community. Despite a difficult economy, we have seen historic giving levels to URI. Last year, a record $18.9 million in charitable gifts were received by the university. Approximately 44% of that was earmarked to fund existing or create new endowments. The majority of our endowment funds generate scholarships for undergraduate and graduate student support. In fact, over $1.5 million in endowment earnings was distributed for this academic year by the Foundation to provide this much-needed and well-deserved financial assistance to hundreds of students across all colleges. We extend to you, as one of our valued donors, an invitation to come to campus to meet your scholarship recipient, Erik, at a time convenient to you. If you would like us to arrange a convenient meeting time, please contact Ted Woodbine in the URI Foundation donor relations office at or twoodbine@foundation.uri.edu. Thank you again for contributing to our success by supporting student scholarships and for enhancing URI s quality and distinction. Best regard Michael J. Smith President URI Foundation 5
