1 Lesson Plan Lesson Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours Course Title: Digital and Interactive Media Session Title: Digital Audio Editing Performance Objective: Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to record, import, and export digital audio. Specific Objectives: Students will learn terminology related to digital audio. Students will know what hardware and software products are required to record digital audio. Students will be able to record their own digital audio clips. Students will be able to import digital audio for editing. Students will know how to create audio files for podcasts. TEKS Correlations: (c) Preparation (10)(A): demonstrate proper use of safety procedures while using digital audio equipment (10)(B): demonstrate proper use of terminology and concepts in relation to audio technology (10)(C): demonstrate proper use of digital audio equipment to capture audio files (10)(D): transfer audio files from equipment to the computer (10)(E): demonstrate proper use of audio editing software such as adding effects, fading, volume control, and manipulation of waveforms using appropriate digital manipulation software (10)(F): export audio files to be used in digital formats in various delivery systems such as podcasting, downloadable files, and streaming Instructor/Trainer References: Instructional Aids: Digital Audio Presentation Student Data File (sound clip) Digital Audio Quiz Digital Audio Quiz - KEY 1

2 Materials Needed: Printouts of teacher-created instructions and quiz Student file folder distributed to all students Equipment Needed: Students will need access to computers with audio editing software installed. They can download several open-source audio editing applications for free. Students will also need individual microphones and (preferably) earphones. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): Talk to students about the uses of audio in media and podcasts. Explain that when they use proper audio editing techniques, they can create voice-overs or music clips for presentations or web sites. Outline Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes: I. Basics of Sound a. Analog sound b. Digital sound II. Audio Equipment a. Hardware b. Software III. Basics of the Audio Editing Software a. Toolbars b. Audio file types The lecture is intended for students to follow along creating the sample clips. Each student should have a computer with a microphone and headphones available during the lecture. IV. Using the Audio Editing Software a. Recording an audio clip b. Saving an audio clip c. Importing an existing audio clip V. Podcasting a. What are podcasts? b. How podcasts work c. Podcast receivers d. Podcasts channels e. Creating podcasts VI. Students should complete individual lab by editing the sample clip provided with the student data file. VII. Digital Audio Quiz Students have the opportunity to complete a hands-on lab on their own. Following the lab, students can take a short quiz over terminology. Application 2

3 Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): During the presentation, students will create two audio clips. One will be a recorded clip of their voices. The second will be a clip of an existing audio track that the students will edit and export as a new clip. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Students will import an existing audio clip, edit it, and export it as a new.wav audio file. Students should complete the Digital Audio Quiz following the lab. Summary Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): As students complete the final lab (Lab 5), they will bring together all the concepts introduced in the lesson and use them to complete a small website. Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): Students will create two audio clips as a group during the presentation. The instructor should pause the presentation to allow students adequate time to complete each step of the process. During this time, the instructor should walk around the room to observe and ensure that students understand the information. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Following each part of the presentation, students should complete the individual lab. Students can also take a short quiz to ensure their understanding of terminology. Extension Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Upon completion of the lesson, students should have adequate knowledge and skills to create custom audio files and edit existing audio files. Students may use audio editing software to create custom audio clips for presentations, web pages, or audio for podcasts. 3
