4 the right materials for you making sense of green PP Material Polypropylene (PP) is a very neutral synthetic manufactured completely of petroleum. PP is fully recyclable, odorless, physiologically harmless and burns as clean as a candle. Beyond its general environmental friendliness, PP offers enhanced chemical and heat resistance, greater flexibility and a wider scope of processing possibilities than other polymers. In addition, PP offers a higher UV resistance to fading and greater suitability to contour processing than other non-pvc compounds. These properties make PP ideal for use in household applications and food preparation environments. Halogen-free polypropylene is an increasingly popular option, as well. ABS Material Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is chlorinefree both in its manufacture and in the final product. Unlike PVC, ABS may be incinerated with general waste. Additionally, this thermoplastic material is impact resistant, which is especially important for office furniture applications, lighter in weight and highly heat resistant. ABS is used as a substitute material for PVC edges in carpentry and woodworking. It has properties similar to PVC, but is inherently more weather-resistant so that no stabilizing agents need to be added. PVC Material Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plays a very important role specifically in the building industry. Raw PVC is a brittle material, requiring the addition of stabilizing agents to prevent thermal and photochemical decomposition. A recent conversion to new stabilizers based on calcium/zinc instead of lead is of key significance to the environment. In addition, the production of PVC involves less energy use when compared to other synthetics [plastics]. 4

Sun light, with a high fraction of UV light has a degrading influence on many materials. PP shows very good resistance to color changes and yellowing. ** Vicat softening point is the softening point for materials such as PP or ABS which have no definite melting point. ABS softens at a temperature of 185 C whereas PP softens at a temperature of 212 F. Thus PP edgeband can be processed with higher temperatures. *** Thermal conductivity of PP (0.41 W/km) is higher than of ABS (0.19 W/km). This results in shorter heating up time for PP and therefore a decreasing processing time especially for narrow radii. **** Chemical Resistance PP is chemical resistant to almost all chemicals, therefore PP was first used in laboratories. ABS on the other side has a chemical reaction e.g. with nail polish remover. When it comes to fires, the right choice of polymers can help avoid the creation of toxic fumes and therefore minimize the risk of contamination.
