1 Who are we? We re Yorkshire Wind Power Ltd. (YWPL) a joint venture between E.ON Climate and Renewables (EC&R) and Energy Power Resources Ltd. (EPRL). We own two wind farms in Yorkshire - Ovenden Moor and Royd Moor. E.ON supplies energy to more than 5 million customers and produces enough electricity for around 8 million homes. The company set up EC&R to develop new, cleaner ways of generating energy so we have secure, sustainable sources of energy for future generations. EC&R has 20 wind farms in the UK, 17 onshore and 3 offshore, producing more than 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity. EPRL has a large and diverse range of power stations, including wind farms and biomass sites. The company has been generating renewable energy since 1992 and has grown to become one of the UK s leading renewable energy producers. As well as wind farms and biomass sites, EPRL is the name behind innovative renewable energy power stations fuelled by poultry litter and straw burning.
2 Why we need wind energy Over the next 20 years, many of our older nuclear, coal and oil-fired power stations will need to close because they ll come to the end of their productive lives or for environmental reasons. By using renewable resources, like wind, we can replace these power stations with cleaner, more sustainable alternatives that will meet the growing demand for affordable energy without polluting the environment. We re also helping our customers to use energy more efficiently and save money in their homes and businesses. In a nutshell, we re working hard to be cleaner and better in everything we do. Ovenden Moor Wind Farm, West Yorkshire - for illustrative purposes only.
3 Our plans for Ovenden Moor Ovenden Moor Wind Farm has been supplying renewable power for over 18 years, but wind turbine technology has moved on, so now we can produce twice as much power with half as many turbines. In 2008, we submitted a planning application to Calderdale Council to replace the wind farm s 23 turbines with 10 new ones. As part of this, we completed an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to see how our plans would affect the environment, and had it reviewed by expert groups. Following this consultation, we decided a 9 turbine scheme would be more appropriate. We now plan to resubmit our planning application for a 9 turbine scheme later this summer. The turbines would be located on moorland to the east of the A6033 and west of the A629, about 3.5km to the west of Ogden in West Yorkshire. They would replace the current 23 turbines at Hollin Hill, near Warley Moor reservoir. 4 Why do we want to repower the current wind farm? At the moment, the 23 existing wind turbines at Ovenden Moor produce 9.2MW of electricity. Because of advances in technology, the 9 new turbines, which would be up to 115m to tip, could generate up to 22.5MW, depending on the type of turbine we choose. That means in a typical year, the wind farm could generate enough electricity to power over 10,717 homes and save over 21,659 tonnes of CO 2, based on a capacity factor of 25%. These estimates are based on the Department of Energy and Climate Change figures which show that most homes use around 4,700kWh of electricity a year and the Government s standard figure that estimates wind farms could reduce greenhouse gases by 430g CO 2 /kwh. 5 Our new planning application what s happening at the moment Because we ve changed our planning application to 9 turbines, instead of 10, we ve withdrawn our 2008 planning application and will submit a new one to Calderdale Council in the summer. At the moment, independent specialists are checking to see how our new plans will impact on the environment. Their findings will be included in our new planning application. We ve designed the wind farm to have as little environmental impact as possible on the area s landscape, wildlife and water sources like streams and rivers. 6 Our transport route how we plan to reach the new site We ve looked at how our construction vehicles would access the site, to deliver the new wind turbines, which can be difficult due to their size. We ve shown our proposed route on the map below. We would leave the M62 at junction 24 and would head north along the A629, onto Pellon Lane in Halifax towards Wainstalls. 7 How will the community benefit? We re keen to play a positive role in your community. That s why we ll be working with residents and community groups in your area to: s et up a Community Benefits Fund to support community projects throughout the life of the wind farm f orm a Community Liaison Group to listen to what local people have to say and keep you up to date with our plans u se local labour to build and run the wind farm, wherever we can. We d like to hear your thoughts and ideas for how we can support your community and how you d like the Community Benefits Fund to work. By getting to know you, we ll be able to help in the right ways. The Community Benefits Fund isn t part of our planning application and getting involved with it won t affect your right to have your say on our plans.
