1 MCHL NEWS Montessori Children's House of Loudoun April 2015 OPEN HOUSE ODYSSEY OF THE MIND MCHL is hosting an Open House event in April. If you know of anyone who is searching for childcare options, please tell them about us. There are postcards on the table outside of the office with more information that you can give to interested families. Sunday, April 26 12:00 3:00 RE-ENROLLMENT Re-enrollment packets were sent home on March 2 nd. We are currently processing new students on our wait lists and the general public. If you have not yet returned your child s enrollment form, please do so immediately. OFFICE NEWS Our Tax I.D. Number is If you need a tuition receipt for tax purposes, please call or the office. MCHL alumni (Aditya Jain from Room 2, Pete Lipshultz from Room 8, Arjun Setty from Room 4) and current MCHL kindergarten student Akshay Setty from Room 4 proudly represented Potowmack ES and MCHL in the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition at Park View HS. Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the USA and approximately 25 other countries participate in the program. Their Runaway Train presentation took first place in their division and will move forward to compete at the next level on Saturday, April 18 th, at South County HS in Lorton, VA. In Runaway Train, the team had to design, build and operate a vehicle traveling on tracks, making several stops and overcoming several obstacles. They then had to perform these tasks in only 8 minutes. Their presentation was nearly flawless and also very funny. The trophy is on display at Potomack ES. We are so proud of our students! 2 SPRING IS IN THE AIR The first day of Spring was March 20 th. Here are a few basic reminders: Check the weather report daily. Fresh air is healthy for children. If you would like your child to remain indoors, please provide a note from your child s pediatrician. KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIP The Class of 2015 will visit the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly on Thursday, April 16 th. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the companion facility to the museum on the National Mall. Please layer your child s clothing. Update your child s change of clothes in their cubby for the warm spring weather. If your daughter wears a skirt or dress to school, please have them wear shorts underneath. Remember to put your child s name on clothing, lunch bags, etc. Please send your child to school in appropriate shoes. This tour introduces students to the concept of flight by examining different types of aircraft. They will find out how airplanes can be both useful and fun to fly, and how aviation affects their lives. They will also participate in We Can Fly! This is a learning lab that features the first successful flight by the Wright brothers in 1903 which inspired future generations to learn how airplanes fly. This class will follow the story of a young student on an airplane ride who learns about the four forces of flight, the basic parts of an airplane, and how they allow for controlled flight. Students will participate in hands-on activities to show what they have learned. April 21 SPIRIT Chili s 5 9 pm Buses will depart MCHL at 9:15 and return at approximately12:30. 3 PARENT EDUCATION RESOURCES Parents often ask the teachers at MCHL for a recommendation for parenting classes. One local resource is Family Compass. Some of the topics discussed in the parent workshops include positive discipline, calm parenting, sleep issues, self-esteem and potty training. Please take a look at the workshops currently being offered to families. PARENTING CLASS SERIES SPRING th DAY OF SCHOOL On Wednesday, February 11 th, the kindergartners had a pizza and cake party to celebrate our 100 th day of school. Each kindergartner created a project that demonstrated the concept of 100. The projects included 100 Skittles, 100 bunnies, 100 gum balls, 100 warriors, 100 stars, and even 100 spoken languages. Some of the projects are displayed in the hallway for your enjoyment. Family Compass is proud to announce their Parenting Class Series for parents of young children. 4 CHINESE NEW YEAR ST. PATRICK S DAY On Thursday, February 19 th, MCHL celebrated Chinese New Year! Each classroom had a small party that featured fortune cookies for dessert. Many thanks to the parents who came to help us celebrate. March 17 th was St. Patrick s Day! Each classroom had a small celebration with dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. PERSIAN NEW YEAR On Thursday, March 19 th, Room 6 celebrated the Persian New Year which marks the first day of Spring. On the last Wednesday of the old year, people light small bonfires and jump over the flames. A traditional ceremonial table display is set up and the table remains in the family home for thirteen days after the start of the holiday. MCHL News 4

5 ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS OFFERED AT MCHL Mother s Morning Out This unique class offers children (18 months 3 years) their first experience in a classroom setting with activities such as story time, songs, dancing, circle time, art projects, recess and free play. MCHL staff will guide your child through these activities while your child also gets the opportunity to socialize with other children their same age. Class is in session Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 11:30 / $35 per morning or monthly at discounted rate ($25 per morning). Mercier School of Dance is currently in session at MCHL. Enrollment forms are located on the table outside of the office. If you would like your child to participate in a free demo class, please stop at the office for more information. Happy Feet Soccer continues each Monday and Wednesday. If you would like your child to participate in a free demo class, please let us know. Piano Keys for Kids will resume in April. The cost is $ plus a $16.00 material fee. Enrollment is limited to 7 children per session. On Tuesday, April 7 th, there will be a FREE DEMO CLASS at 3:00. MCHL News 5
