1 Cégep du Vieux Montréal Syllabus 604-PU1-03 Formation générale propre Département de langues Course objective 000M: To communicate in English with confidence by using language that can be applied to students field of study Semester: Winter 2006 Professor: Margie Bertrand Office: 8.08 Tel: ext Course Description The course 604-PU1-VM is designed for intermediate level students in ESL who are studying academic subjects as part of a two-year pre-university programs. It is the second of a sequence of two mandatory courses intended to prepare students to function in an English-speaking environment. It proposes to develop students basic abilities in the 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) using themes of general interest and related to students field of study. Since, for most students, this is the last English course before entering university, this course will try to help students acquire the English that they will need to use in the disciplines that they will study and eventually work in. 2. General Course Objectives To be able to communicate with confidence in English by using language that can be applied to students field of study.

Target Competencies and Specific Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following: Listening: Understand the meaning of an authentic oral message of general interest or related to a field of study. 1.1 Recognize the main structures of an oral message. 1.2 Identify the gist as well as the main ideas of a 5-minute message. 1.3 Recognize the organizational logic and chronology of the message. 1.4 Develop listening comprehension. 1.5 Acquire a level-appropriate vocabulary related to a field of study. Reading: Understand the useful elements in an authentic text of general interest or related to a field of study to accomplish a specific task. 2.1 Understand the gist and the main ideas of the reading. 2.2 Make a connection between the general ideas and the main ideas of a reading 2.3 Recognize the organizational logic of a text 2.4 Use that information to accomplish a specific task (e.g., use information from two articles to present arguments in a debate or write a summary or a research paper). 2.5 Develop level-appropriate vocabulary Speaking: Present or discuss some aspect of his/her field of study or of general interest for 4 to 5 minutes. 3.1 Communicate in a clear and coherent manner that is comprehensible to a non-expert. 3.2 Communicate in a manner (correct register of language in terms of formality) that is appropriate to the situation. 3.3 Use terms and expressions related to field of study or the general topic. 3.4 Use appropriate and correct grammar. 3.5 Develop pertinent register Writing: Write a text related to his/her field of study or of general interest. 4.1 Write 300 words in a clear and coherent manner, on a subject related to his/her field of study, and comprehensible to a non-expert. 4.2 Use appropriate and correct grammar and spelling. 4.3 Use terms related to your field of study and level-appropriate vocabulary. 4.4 Write in a style/genre typical of academic studies (e.g. short essay) 4. Methodology There will be some teacher-centered presentations for grammatical and theoretical notions. These will then be applied by the students through a variety of activities: structured discussions, interactive group activities, interviews, as well as individual work in the lab and classroom.

3 Many of these activities will be directly related to the students field of study: description of their programs, vocabulary lists, explanation of key concepts, surveys on a fieldspecific subject. These activities will allow the students to develop the 4 language skills within their field of study. Throughout this course, students will be able to evaluate their progress and assess their understanding of the concepts covered in class through homework correction, quizzes and in-class assignments. Some of the work mentioned above will also be considered as summative evaluation and will count for 60% of the final grade. Specific activities will include: 4.1 Listening - listening to a variety of authentic spoken texts and videos - practice in note-taking - discussion of concepts presented - visits with the monitors 4.2 Reading - reading authentic, field-specific articles of approximately 750 words, taken from newspapers and journals - reading pedagogical texts developed by the teacher or taken from ESL textbooks 4.3 Speaking - discussions based on listenings and readings done in class and for homework - communicative grammar activites - role plays - debates - lab practice 4.4 Writing - analysing texts to understand their structure (thesis statement, topic sentence, etc) - short writing assignments in class and at home - grammar exercises 5. Evaluation: formative and summative 6.1 Formative evaluation During this course, students will be able to evaluate their progress and assess their comprehension of concepts covered in class through in-class correction of homework, peer evaluation, quizzes and teacher feedback on assignments and in-class activities. 6.2 Summative evaluation Grades will be distributed as follows:

5 Course Work 60% Writing 15% 2 text samples x 4% each 1 essay x 7% Reading 10% 2 assignments x 5% each Listening 5% 2 recordings x 2.5% each Speaking 5% 2 mini presentations x 2.5 % each Grammar 10% 2 quizzes x 5% each Survey 15% 1 oral report x 5% 1 written report x 10% Final Exams 40% Writing 10% Reading 10% Listening 10% Speaking 10% 6.3 Description and criteria of the final evaluation To pass this course, students must obtain a passing grade (ie 60%) for the course work as well as a passing grade for the final assessment. The final assessment, which determines whether the student has reached the target competency, will consist in an exam incorporating all the notions studied in class. The oral component (speaking and listening) will take the form of a debate. The written component (reading and writing) will take the form of a text analysis and an essay. This exam will be administered in class during the last 2 weeks of the term and will count for 40% of the final grade. The criteria for the final writing/speaking evaluations are as follows: Content/ Structure: 40% Do you have a clear introduction/ thesis/ support/ conclusion? Grammar/ Vocabulary: 50/ Is your grammar accurate and your vocabulary level-specific? Mechanics (for final writing exam) 10% Do you use accurate punctuation, spelling, etc? Oral Delivery (for final speaking exam) 10% Are you fluent? Is your pronunciation clear?

6 The criteria for the listening evaluation are whether or not you can understand the main points that were made by the debaters. The criteria for the reading evaluation are whether or not you can understand the main idea and supporting detail, identify the purpose and structure, and make inferences about the text. 7. What is expected of the student - students are expected to speak English at all times in the class - students must prepare for class by doing all the assigned homework - if students miss a class, it is their responsibility to find out what homework was assigned 8.
