Apprenticeships Everything you need to know about an Apprenticeship with West Sussex County Council

West Sussex County Council Apprenticeships:? There are over 240 types of apprenticeships you can do. These include office work, teaching, cleaning, gardening, computer work, cooking, etc. You can go to a college in West Sussex. The following pages explain what being an Apprentice means. 2

What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a training programme. You train on the job and go to college at the same time. Apprentices earn money and work with experienced staff to learn a job. Anyone over 16 who does not have a degree can apply. Apprentices go to College during the day, in the evening or fulltime for a few weeks at a time, your training will give certificates. Apprenticeships can last for up to 4 years. 3

What does Apprenticeship Training include? Maths, English, Communication (at College) Employment Rights and Responsibilities (College) Learning that helps with a job you want to do. You get a certificate from college/work. NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) you are assessed at work with College support. Assessed means that someone watches you carry out a task to see if you can do it. 4

There are 3 levels of apprenticeships you can do: Apprenticeship: Level 2 (this is the same as doing 5 GCSE exams) Advanced Apprenticeship: Level 3 (this is the same as 2 A-levels) Higher Apprenticeship: Level 4. You need 2 A levels or similar to be able to do this course. 5

How long does it take to complete the Apprenticeship? This depends on which apprenticeship you do and what level you study at. They take from 1-4 years usually. It also depends on the effort you put into the work and study. 6

Pay: Once you are employed as an apprentice, you go to work and to college. You are supported for the whole apprenticeship. Working hours are 30 or more per week. If you are doing a high level course you will get pay rises each year. Apprentice weekly pay: Level 2 Apprentice Advanced level 3 Apprentice Higher level 4-7 Apprentice If you work part time, you will only be paid for the hours you work. You get paid on 24 th of each month directly into a Bank Account. 7

Benefits: You get 23 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays. The benefits of working for West Sussex County Council are: Some discounts on restaurants, health and beauty, holidays, home and garden Discount on a rail card (20%) Free bus from Bognor Regis to County Hall Chichester Training opportunities Cafés at many County Building 8

The Apprenticeship Contract Apprentices are employed on a contract for training. The end date for the contract is when the apprenticeship will finish. Moving into Employment We cannot promise that you will get a job at the Council at the end of the apprenticeship. When you finish, you can apply for suitable jobs when they are advertised. If you do get a job with the council you will have a normal contract of employment. 9

Time off for apprenticeship Training You will be given paid time off to do your training. You should not take a holiday from work when you should be at college. It is important to attend the entire college course. 10

Responsibilities as an Apprentice As an Apprentice you must:- Work hard to make sure you do well in the apprenticeship Follow West Sussex County Council rules and procedures on employment Work as part of a team Accept responsibility for own learning and to ask for support when needed. Work hard and be willing to develop job skills and to do well. Attend college and work as required and to do college work on time. Do all the tasks for job that your Manager gives you. 11

Your manager must: Provide a safe place to work including health and safety training Make sure you understand that everyone must be treated as an equal in the workplace. Make sure you get training for the job and attend College. This helps you to achieve your learning goals. Agree your training plan and provide feedback to the Training Framework Co-ordinator and Assessor at the college. Meet with you regularly to make sure that things are working well. Keep a record of attendance at work Take part in your learning reviews. 12

What if it doesn t work? You are expected to keep to all of the rules in the apprenticeship contract. You are expected to do the work and training as well as you can. If this does not happen, your contract will be reviewed. You are expected to make a valuable contribution to your workplace. 13

College/Training Provider What is a Framework Co-ordinator? When you start College you will be given a coordinator to work with you. This is your main link person at college. The coordinator sees you during your study at college. They will also visit you at work. The purpose of the visit is to see how you are getting on and to assess what you are doing. The Apprentice s supervisor should attend these meetings. 14

What is a workplace assessor? Every Apprentice has a Workplace Assessor. The workplace assessor provides feedback on how the you are getting on. They are used as evidence when the Apprentice is doing an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) 15
