2 Scripture Matthew 22:15-33 Lesson Overview: Intellectual Dimension In this sixth and final lesson students will look at how Jesus responded to people who questioned and challenged him when it came to his beliefs. If your students haven t had someone challenge their faith or ask them questions about what they believe, the will at some point. Knowing Scripture is essential when it comes to responding to people who have questions or challenge our core beliefs as Christians. Biblical Commentary In this week s passage we see that the Pharisees have a plan to trap Jesus in his own words. Before they ask their question of Jesus, they shower him with empty flattery. Their questions are not motivated by a genuine desire to learn and grow. Instead, they hope Jesus will stumble over his own words and they will find reason to accuse him of blasphemy. The question is a simple one: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? By saying yes, Jesus will anger and alienate himself from the Zealots, who do not believe in paying the tax. By saying no, the Romans can have Jesus arrested for treason. Jesus is quick to unravel the plan and motives of his questioners by calling them hypocrites. Jesus does not side with the Zealots or anyone else. The community Jesus desires to build is one that must render unto Caesar whatever belongs to him, while never turning away from one s primary obligation to God. If Caesar should ever claim what is God s, then one s loyalty to God has top priority. Jesus s response is brilliant because he lays out the proper relationship people are to have with the government. The second interaction (vv ) is just as malicious as the first one. Jesus s questioners try to make him pick sides between the Saducees (who do not believe in the resurrection of the dead) and the Pharisees (who do believe in the resurrection of the dead). The hypothetical situation that the Saducees bring up would be unlikely in real life. Jesus responds to the Saducees by accusing them of being ignorant of the Scriptures. Jesus states that the resurrection will bring about a change in the sexual relationship. Jesus is astonished that his questioners have not studied and understood the Scriptures. This week s passage provides a great opportunity to show students how Jesus was constantly questioned and challenged. While students will never be challenged to the same extent Jesus was, it is still extremely important for them to know the Scriptures so they can respond to people who wish to challenge their faith or who have genuine questions about being a follower of Christ. Reflect on these themes: Questions: Would you be able to quote and reference Scripture if someone challenged your faith or questioned you about your beliefs? Think about your students: Could your students reference Scripture if someone asked them about their faith? Resources White board/poster board Messages to Parents and Teens For Teens: The following are a couple of text messages, Tweets, or Facebook statuses you could send out to your students to promote the meeting and/or prepare them for it. 3 For parents: Here are some text messages to get parents and teens talking before your next meeting and a follow-up to equip parents to continue encouraging their teens to engage in living out God s mission. Please take a minute to read Matthew 22:15-33 with your students before group this week. Ask them if anyone has ever questioned their Christian faith before. This week we are going to be talking about how knowing God s Word can help us when we are questioned and challenged in our faith. Ask your students how knowing God s Word can help us when people question us about our faith. This is a follow-up /message you may wish to send to parents regarding the content that you studied during group time. Dear Parents, We had a great time at group this week! We looked at Matthew 22:15-33 and how Jesus was questioned and challenged by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus was able to respond to his questioners because he read and studied the Scriptures. We talked about how knowing God s Word can help us when people have honest questions about being a Christian or confront us about our faith in God. We don t learn God s Word so we can put other people down; we learn it so we can grow and provide guidance and hope for others as well. Here are a few questions you may wish to discuss with your teen: What are one or two things you remember from your small group time? Has there ever been a time that someone has questioned you about being a Christian? If someone asked you what you believed to be the 2-3 most important verses and passages in the whole Bible, what would you say? 3
4 Lesson Guide Explore Open your time by allowing students to share the highlights of their weeks. Also allow them to share any praises or prayer requests. Open your group time in prayer. Option: Is That in the Bible? POP QUIZ! Purpose: To open this week s lesson by seeing if students can differentiate between phrases and statements found in Scripture and those that are not. Give each student a piece of paper and a writing utensil and have them number the paper SAY: I am going to say 10 statements, and you have to tell me if the statement is found in the bible by writing yes or no. Once you are saved, you are always saved. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. God helps those who help themselves. Money is the root of all evil. Cleanliness is next to godliness. God works in mysterious ways. Pride comes before the fall. The seven deadly sins: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. You get what you give. The eye is the window to the soul. Ask everyone to count up the number of times they answered yes and share that number with the rest of the group. SAY: Actually, the correct answer is zero. While some of those phrases may be based on other verses or passages found in the Bible, none of those quotes are found directly in Scripture. In this week s lesson we are going to talk about how knowing Scripture and God s Word can help us when people challenge or have questions about our Christian faith. Encounter Option: Questions Surrounding the Text Purpose: To explore and understand the text Ask a volunteer to read Matthew 22: You may want to have the passage read aloud a couple times using different translations to help the students to hear and understand what is being said. ASK & DISCUSS: Why do you think the people were trying to trap Jesus? Have you ever gotten into a religious conversation with someone who is not a Christian? What was that like? Have you ever gotten into a religious conversation or disagreement with a fellow Christian who believes differently than you? What was that like? How do you feel when someone questions or challenges your faith? Why? How can knowing God s Word help us when people ask us questions or challenge us in our Christian faith? SAY: Jesus found himself surrounded by a lot of people who were trying to prove him wrong or get him to say something stupid. Jesus was often able to respond to these people by quoting Scripture. The more you and I study and learn Scripture, the better we will be at sharing our faith and answering questions people may ask us. Option: What Would You Say? Purpose: To help students understand the importance of knowing Scripture when responding to people s questions about the faith. (This option works best after reading and discussing Matthew 22:15-33 using the questions in the previous option.) For this option, explain to the students that you are going to make a statement and then you are going to go around the room and give each student an opportunity to share how they would respond to your statement if it was said to them by a friend. After discussing each statement, you can have teens look up the suggested verses that help speak truth to the comments. Statement #1: Nowhere in the Bible does it ever say that we have to believe in Jesus or go to church in order to be a Christian. How would you respond to this statement? Suggested Scripture References: John 14:6, Hebrews 10:25 4
5 Statement #2: When I smoke marijuana I am not hurting anyone, so why does it matter if I get high? How would you respond to this statement? Suggested Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Statement #3: I googled the phrase, Don t have sex before marriage, and it is not in the Bible, and I couldn t find it in there. How would you respond to this statement? Suggested Scripture References: Hebrews 13:4, Colossians 3:5 SAY: Some of those statements could be pretty tough to respond to. How much could it help us if we knew these passages off the top of our heads because we had studied them in God s Word? If you haven t had people question or challenge your faith, or even had questions yourself, you will at some point in your life. That is why we need to study and know God s Word! Engage Option: Possible Scenarios Purpose: To challenge students to come up with possible scenarios they could face in their day-to-day lives that deal with people challenging or questioning them about their faith. Break your group up into 2-3 students each and challenge them to come up with scenarios they could possibly face at school, with their friends, on the internet, etc. The scenarios should be about people challenging or questioning their faith in God. An example could be: My science teacher at school said that there is no evidence of God in the world, therefore, God could not have created the world. Give the students 5-7 minutes to come up with these scenarios. Once they are finished, bring the group back together and discuss the scenarios that groups came up with and talk about how you would respond in each situation. SAY: The reason we do an activity like this is to help us practice what we would say in difficult situations. The Bible tells us we should always be ready to give a reason for why we believe what we do. Exercises like this challenge us to do that. Closing Reaffirm the following truths to your students: Jesus was able to reply to those who challenged and questioned his beliefs with Scripture. As followers of Christ, we must commit to learning and knowing God s Word so we can respond to those who may have questions or challenge our beliefs. Knowing and learning Scripture can help us when questions arise in our own hearts as well. Close your lesson in prayer. Pray that God would give us wisdom to help us speak words of love and truth whenever we are challenged and questioned about our faith. 5
6 Explore: John 3:16 Purpose: To introduce this week s lesson by using John 3:16 as an example of a scripture that is important to know. ASK: How many people here in this room could quote to me John 3:16? (Allow one or more students to quote the verse.) Why do you think this verse is taught to so many people at a young age? What does this passage say that is so important? SAY: The reason John 3:16 is so well known is that it contains some extremely important information that is considered fundamental to the faith. However, John 3:16 is just one of several verses in the Bible that it is important for believers to learn and become familiar with. In this week s lesson we are going to talk about how learning and knowing Scripture can help us when people ask us questions about our faith or challenge our beliefs. Encounter: Journal It- Key Verses Purpose: To challenge students to commit to learning and knowing several different key verses and passages in Scripture. Have students look up and write down in their journals at least seven of the verses listed below (they can do all of them if they want). After each verse they write down, challenge the students to write down what this key verse means for us as Christians. Give students minutes to complete this exercise. After they have finished, give the students an opportunity to share what verses they wrote down and why they find the verses significant. Verses from the What Would You Say option: John 14:6; Hebrews 10:25; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Hebrews 13:4; Colossians 3:5 Other Key Verses in Scripture: Psalm 27:1; Psalm 51:10-12; Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 22:37-39; Matthew 28:19-20; John 3:16; John 10:10; Romans 10:9; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Philippians 4:8; 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Engage: Homework? Creative Options Purpose: To challenge students to ask at least five other people outside of their group about an important verse, passage, or promise in Scripture. As you get ready to close your group session, challenge students to think of at least five people they could ask if they have a certain verse or passage that is especially significant to them. Have the person share the verse and why it is significant. Have group members share what they found out next week at group. 6
