1 Emmaus Hull & East Riding Community Manager Job Description Location: Accountable to: Responsible for: Salary Live in role Pension Contribution Emmaus Hull The Orchard General Manager Deputy/Community Leader(s), Support Staff, Companions & Community Volunteers 25k p/a Available Live in package negotiable Payable from 2017 Overall Purpose of the Job The Community Leader is responsible for the management of all activities relating to the welfare, care and development of Companions in the community in a manner which embodies the Emmaus ethos. They will be responsible for the planning, support, development, supervision and training needs of the Companions to enhance their skills and confidence. They will be responsible for the safe and disciplined running of the Community. They will be responsible for the line management, support and supervision of community employees and volunteers. The post holder will support the social enterprise business activity of the community, ensuring all activity meets all health and safety procedures. The Community Leader will support wider community development and The Orchard community training facilities. The Orchard will house 30 formerly homeless individuals and the Community Leader will be responsible for their overall welfare. Ensuring that all individuals are treated with respect, dignity, and are pivotal to the service delivery and development. Duties and Responsibilities When carrying out your duties the health and safety of everyone is your paramount responsibility. In all your planning, control, training and supervision you must ensure that safe working conditions are introduced and maintained. Community Management and Development Responsible for the referral, admission and acceptance of new Companions Responsible for the welcome, welfare and care of Companions, their integration into the Emmaus community and the wider community at large, developing a sense of extended family Responsible for the initial assessments, risk management plans, regular reviews and the ongoing support planning in relation to Companions Devising and implementing all related documentation related to companions and volunteer management Ensure Companions are involved in all aspects of community life and are part of its organisation, development and decision making procedures Responsible for day-to-day problem solving and conflict resolution, taking appropriate disciplinary action in a fair and consistent manner when necessary

2 To lead a sharing community by example through participation in all aspects of community life Attend and participate in peer group meetings, training sessions etc at the direction of the General Manager Be responsible to the General Manager in the upkeep and maintenance of the community, to ensure that it provides a pleasant and comfortable home for the Companions, whilst adhering to health and safety requirements Be resident in the Community for an agreed proportion of time (live in accommodation provided) including on call management responsibilities for the service. To contribute to securing and managing learning facilities and contracts onsite at The Orchard Developing Companions Skills Support the Business Manager and, where appropriate, the General Manager to ensure that in relation to, the management, supervision and coordination of Companions work areas that : There is sufficient work for every Companion Companions are included in discussion around work and business ideas Work is fairly distributed Companions are involved in the planning of work Companions are supervised and supported to ensure that they can work to the best of their ability Appropriate training and development is identified, organised and delivered Commercial income is maximised and agreed targets achieved via the support from Companions Responsible for the development of Companions skills, individually and collectively to enhance their development and that of the Community Ensure Companions are involved in the planning of new projects and encourage their contribution to potential improvements Identify Companions personal needs and cater for them in a supportive and encouraging way Liaise with relevant agencies outside the community where appropriate, to ensure that the specific needs of Companions are met effectively Identify and co-ordinate community activities, including outings, events and exchange visits Ensure that partners are consulted and educated around the Emmaus model Work positively with external agencies and represent Emmaus Hull & East Riding in citywide events. Health and Safety Responsible for the monitoring, reviewing and implementation of all Emmaus Hull & East Riding health and safety procedures; with the support of any relevant 3 rd parties Ensure all statutory responsibilities are met, in particular fire and health & safety regulations, including COSHH and risk assessments. This process must be documented; including any accidents/incidents Ensure all relevant risk assessments are appropriate and maintained Ensure all Companions, staff, and volunteers are trained, have completed all relevant health and safety requirements and understand reporting arrangements

3 Ensure all areas are kept clear and tidy at all times Line Management of Deputy Community Leaders Recruit, train and develop employees in line with community policies and employment law, ensuring relevant HR policies and procedures are followed (appraisals, discipline, grievance, anti-bullying etc) Motivate, support and manage staff; including holding documented regular supervision meetings Recruit and train all community volunteers Organise team development where appropriate Business Development Work with the General Manager and Business Manager to sustain and develop community objectives, contracts, and business opportunities Assist and support the Dove House team where appropriate in effective business operations, enabling the Community to be part of retail operations Finance & Administration The post holder is expected to plan, budget and report on finances associated with Companions and the community home. In addition this will involve verification, authorisation and monitoring of expenditure To contribute to the construction of the annual budget Emmaus communities aim to be self-sustaining financially and the post holder is expected to take effective measures towards this goal. Community accounts must be clear, transparent and up to date. All employees are expected to adopt value for money principles Responsible for the day-to-day administration, organisation and effective operation of the community and the maintenance of appropriate records Responsible for all benefit claims such as: housing benefit, DLA, incapacity benefit etc and liaison with related agencies Prepare reports as required Policy Implementation and Development Responsible for implementing, developing and reviewing policies and operating procedures similar to those existing in communities throughout the UK, to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including health and safety, employment law and other statutory requirements Ensure that the community is run in an efficient and environmentally aware way, by designing policies to limit waste and environmental damage Consulting and including stakeholders in service deliver and shaping Internal and External Relations Develop and maintain good working relationships with other organisations and companies, which will benefit Emmaus Hull in relation to your areas of work Build and maintain effective communications with local organisations, businesses and their representatives

4 Develop and maintain the community s relationship with the Emmaus movement at regional, national and international levels Liaise with other relevant outside agencies and involve them in the community where appropriate Other Duties Develop, manage and participate in a staff rota to ensure 24 hour, 7 days a week cover is in place Deputise for the General Manager when appropriate Cover for colleagues as and when required Attend meetings and contribute to the overall community strategy Assist the General Manager and other staff in the development of Solidarity action within and from the community Perform any other tasks or duties deemed necessary by the General Manager General Emmaus Hull & East Riding works with vulnerable people. Staff and volunteers must observe the proper demarcation and professional boundaries while performing their role. The post holder must always act in a way which will maintain the good reputation of Emmaus Hull & East Riding, upholding the policies and procedures of Emmaus. The post holder will strive to preserve good working relationships with staff, volunteers, companions and the trustees, keeping the appropriate key personnel well informed of significant matters relating to the community. We expect you to carry out your job responsibilities in an environmentally aware manner. Our aim is to ensure all resources are utilised effectively and efficiently. You will be expected to apply sound value for money principles in undertaking purchasing or supply of goods and services. In Emmaus, volunteers are an important resource and make a vital contribution to Emmaus s aim to take action to help disadvantaged people. You will be expected to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our work.
