1 Backgrund Backgrunder: Fd Access and Newcmers Many newcmers have multiple fd related challenges There are ften mre vulnerable t pverty, unemplyment, underemplyment and scial islatin At least 1 in 10 husehlds in Trnt (higher rate amng urban Abriginal ppulatins, husehlds f recent immigrants and lne parents) can't affrd regular meals and a healthy diet. Hunger and pverty are assciated with higher disease rates and lwer life expectancy On the ppsite end, ne in three Trnt children (age 2-11) is either verweight r bese Newcmers face challenges in adapting t new ways t access, prepare and eat fd in Canada, while attempting t preserve their healthful fd knwledge and practices Research In a 2009 TPH cmmunity cnsultatin n fd issues, newcmers identified these fd issues: affrdability f fd and understanding where less expensive fd is sld; adjusting t weekly r bi-weekly shpping, lack f walkable fd stres; negtiating fd chices with children; schl lunches; understanding fd labels; adapting their fd skills t Trnt. Typical Issues Often, fd is prepared after a full day's wrk and time cnstraints are an issue Many families d nt have vehicles and use the transit system t shp. The Peer Nutritin Prgram is a prgram led by trained Cmmunity Nutritin Educatrs aimed at imprving the feeding practices and skills f parents with children ages 6 mnths t 6 years within diverse cultural cmmunities in Trnt. Culturally specific nutritin educatin (ffered in different languages) Gift certificates fr healthy fds Child care available Available in yur neighburhd and cmmunity Prgram supprted by Dietitians Services are free and cnfidential Wh can be invlved in the Prgram?
