2 COUNTIES MANUKAU RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION PO Box 175, Pukekohe Dear Coach First of all I would like to personally thank you for contributing your time and effort voluntarily to our game and coaching a junior rugby team. This effort is very much appreciated by the Thames Valley Rugby Union. As an additional resource to assist you during the season, we have created this practice plan booklet that will help you organise an enjoyable training session for your players. There are 15 practice plans emphasising certain core skills of the game and within those plans there are many activities that will help develop these skills. There are a variety of illustrations and explanations of each activity to help you understand the structure of the activity. However what you must also remember is that the only limit, when it comes to designing an activity, is your imagination as long as it achieves what you want it to achieve and the activity is relevant to the skill level of your players. 3 PRACTICE PLANS FOR JUNIOR COACHES Recommended for U8 U13 coaches The following practice plans have been constructed to allow a coach to follow a sequential plan through a season of rugby (15 practice plans). Although these plans are only a guide, they do however have several important features. 1. Skills and drills are repeated because you do not want a new skill and drill every week. Practice makes perfect! 2. Each individual skill has three practice plans. A coach should not start with practice plan 3 for example. The coach should always start at practice plan Coaches can easily move unit skills and team skills around to suit their individual team circumstances. Note: Every plan is an individual plan, therefore it is difficult to prescribe skills and drills for a team that you are unfamiliar with. Practice Plan Time Activities Warm-up 15 mins Design a warm up that reflects some of your objectives for the session. Prepare both mind and body for the practice. Incorporate stretching. Individual Skills 15 mins Review previously learned / poorly performed skills. Introduce new skills early in the session. Use drills that require players to perform the skills accurately and make good decisions to be successful. Skill practice may also develop fitness. Unit Skills 15 mins Practice mini-unit and unit skills such as back attack, back defence, loose forward defence, scrum, lineout, kick-off, etc. Emphasis should be on team patterns of play and tactics for the next game. Utilise opposition to make the activities as game-like as possible. Simulate game situations. Add pressure relevant to the skill level of the players. Team Development 20 mins Bring the various units together. Practice phase of the game as a team. Simulate situations that players are likely to encounter in the game - use reserves as opposition. Develop team links and continuity. Involve reserves in training activities/team trainings so they can develop too. Add pressure, like time restriction, refereeing, etc, to simulate game conditions. Cool-down 5 mins Slow jog and gentle stretching will prepare the players for the next session. Treat it as part of the practice, not an extra.

7 HANDLING Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Picking up ball Pick Up Place To practise handling the ball on the ground 4 balls per group players 10 x 10 metre grid Four balls are placed on the ground in the middle of the grid. Place Pick up Place Pick up 10m Grid Pick up Place Pick up Place The first four players run out, pick up their ball and pass it to the player diagonally opposite them. 2. The next four players run out and replace the balls and continue across the grid. 3. The next four pick up and pass and so on. Players should: Stay low on their approach to the ball and bend at their knees. Stay close to the ball. Call my place and my pickup. Not let the ball drop or bounce. Scoop up the ball without stopping. Not stand up after pickup. Stay low and drive away after pickup. When picking up the ball players should place their back foot slightly behind the ball, scooping through with the backhand and pushing the ball into the other hand in front of the ball. Variations / Progression 6-8-cone grid. Receiver lying on ground.

8 HANDLING Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Picking up ball Lifting a Grounded Ball Able to pick up a ball from the ground near an obstacle At least 4 tackle bags & 4 balls Any number of forwards 15 x 20 metre grid Individually or in pairs. Set out the tackle bags 5 metres apart in a line and place a ball beside each tackle bag as shown in the diagram. 20m Bags 5m apart 1. On go the first player sprints forward, picks up the first ball and runs over the tackle bag. 2. The player carries and places the ball by the second tackle bag, picks up the second ball, runs over the second tackle bag carrying the ball and places it beside the third tackle bag. 3. The activity continues until the player reaches the last tackle bag. The player takes the ball from beside the last tackle bag and places it beside the first tackle bag. 4. The second player runs forward and the drill continues until all players have completed the activities. Move forward into the ball, side on. Bend knees and present hard parts of body to opposition. Front foot past ball. Wide balanced base. Secure the ball with both hands. Assess and initiate continuity options. Variations / Progression 1. Run in pairs with one player lifting and feeding the ball to the partner, who places the ball beside the next tackle bag.

9 Modified Games 19 MODULE: MODIFIED GAMES Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Handling Order Ball To improve ball handling skills 1 ball 2 teams of 4, 5 or 6 players 10 x 10 metre grid Two teams grouped within the grid. 10m Put pressure on the man 10 10m 1. Each player in the team is given a number. 2. The ball must be passed through the team in order ( ). 3. The players are free to move only within the boundary. 4. The ball carrier can move when they have the ball. 5. The other team tries to pressure the team with the ball into bad passes or to intercept the pass. 6. The ball changes team if it is dropped or intercepted. Next players in number order must move to get themselves free to receive a pass. The ball should be passed to the space where the receiver is running into. Communication is essential, players must be aware. Defending players should shadow their opposite. Variations / Progression 1. Introduce a second ball.

10 BALL FAMILIARISATION Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Handling Multi Action Relay To practice various ball skills 1 ball per group 6-15 players 20 x 20 metre grid Three lines face a marker 15 metre away 20m Square 10 Left team dribble ball, Right team rotate ball. 1. Each of the front players runs around their marker performing a designated skill. 2. After completing the skill the players hand the ball to the next player in line. Types of skills: 1st lap: Roll ball and pick up 2nd lap: Dribble ball along the ground 3rd lap: Shoulder roll, ball in arms 4th lap: Rotate ball around trunk 5th lap: Chip kick and chase When picking up a rolling ball the players should bend legs and scoop through with their back hands. When dribbling the players should use only short kicks and keep control of the ball.

11 BALL FAMILIARISATION Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Handling Follow the coach Improve communication and reactions 1 ball per pair 2 - team Large 1m gap at all times. Large area 1. Players form pairs and position themselves so that only one player in each pair can see the coach. 2. Each pair has a ball and the drill starts with the player in each pair, separated by 1m, passing back and forward to one another. 3. The coach blows the whistle and at the same time points in a direction they want the players to go. 4. The player who can see immediately goes in that direction and the other player adjusts. Good communication is imperative. Keep the players positioning close at all times. Variations / Progression 1. Introduce groups of four players. 2. Call out direction i.e. left, right, forward, etc.

12 74 Handling MODULE: HANDLING Category: Basic pass Name of Drill: Pass progression Objective: Developing the fundamental skills of the basic lateral pass Equipment: 1 ball per group, cones Group Size: 5-8 5m x 10-15m Increased spacings i.e m spaces Stage Stage 1 Passing progression Arm length Stage 1. Players are positioned along a straight line separated by around one arm s length. Players in the first three stages remain stationary. Players simply swing the ball along the line to the next player, who simply reaches out to receive the ball. Stage 2. Now players separated by 1.5m pass the ball along the lines. Stage 3. Increase the separation to about 3m. Stage 4. Lateral passing at a walking pace for about 30m. Stage 5. Lateral passing at jogging pace for about 30m. Stage 6. Lateral passing at running pace for about 30m. (Vary speeds.) It is essential that players strive for smoothness and rhythm in all movements when performing these drills. Emphasize both passing and catching. Variations / Progression Use cut-out pass, lob pass, pop pass, etc.

13 190 Modified Games MODULE: MODIFIED GAMES Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Handling How Many Passes To improve players passing skills and reactions 1 ball 4 players 5 x 5 metre grid Four players inside grid area. 5m Grid 5m Grid 1. Four players group together inside the grid area with one player nominated as the interceptor. 2. The interceptor is to try and pressure the other players into making bad passes or dropping the ball. 3. If the ball is dropped or intercepted, the player who made the error and the interceptor change roles and the drill continues. Accurate and correct passing techniques. Communication between players. Accuracy under pressure is the key to the drill. Attacking players not in possession of the ball must run into space. Passes should be aimed at the space into which the runner is running. Variations / Progression 1. Introduce a scoring system for the most number of passes made uninterrupted. 2. Increase the number of interceptors.

14 HANDLING Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Pass & Catch Passing Waves To improve players passing & receiving technique 8-12 cones / One ball 9 minimum - 25 maximum 10 x 10 metre grid (this will need to be extended with more players taking part in the drill) Three teams of 3, 4 or 5 players. Set up as shown in diagram. Group C 1 Group A 2 3 Group B 4 1. Group A runs towards Group B passing the ball laterally. The last player who receives the ball in Group A passes to the person in Group B. 2. Group B runs towards Group C passing the ball. 3. Group A lines up where Group B was originally stationed. 4. The last person in Group B passes to the player in Group C. 5. Procedure is repeated. Ensure that all players have appropriate alignment to ensure that they can receive the ball in front of their body. All ball receivers must have their hands up to provide a target for the passer. All players should be encouraged to run straight. Variations/Progression 1. Move cones closer together to increase pressure. 2. Two teams running in opposite directions if there are sufficient numbers (two balls can be used). 3. Have a halfback feeding the ball to each team. 4. Have an extra player coming into each backline with the opposition team acting as defenders.

15 HANDLING Category: Pass & Catch Name of Drill: Zig Zag Passing Objective: Develop a pass, catch and run drill during warm up Equipment: As many balls as the group s skills will allow. Up to 1 for every 2 players. Group Size: Any number but using full squad 10 x 50 metre grid Drill set up: Two lines facing each other. Each line should be 3-5 metres apart and each player should be 1 metre from the player beside them. 10m m The coach feeds as many balls one at a time, as the player s skill will allow, to player 1 and these are passed in a zigzag from one line to the other right down the two lines. 2. Once all the balls being used have been handled by a player, that player runs to the end of the line to receive the balls again. 3. The drill continues until the players reach the end of the 50-metre grid. Players must practise passing from both sides of the body. Communication between the players is important. Players must pass accurately to the next person. Sympathetic passes. Variations / Progression 1. The players run down the centre line between the two groups. The players must be careful not to hit the running players.

16 HANDLING Category: Basic pass Name of Drill: Opposed 2 vs. 1 Objective: To practise beating a defender as a pair Equipment: 1 ball per group Group Size: 4 players 10 x 10 metre grid 10m Grid B C A D 1. The feeder A passes to B. 2. B or C must then between them score by beating D - no kicking. 3. The attackers can beat their opponent by passing or evading. 4. Starting positions to be varied by both the attackers and the defenders. 5. Opponent to be conditioned to defend as appropriate i.e. touch or tackle. 6. Repeat for the first pair as necessary. The player with the ball must run straight and take the defender to the side opposite to where the support is. The ball should be passed out in front of the receiver. Support players should surge onto the ball to get past the sliding defender. Defenders should attempt to isolate the ball carrier from their support. Defenders should attempt to get the ball carrier to pass early so that they can move on to the new receiver creating a one-on-one situation.

17 HANDLING Category: Draw and pass Name of Drill: 2 v 1 Objective: To practise passing in space Equipment: 1 ball per group Group Size: 5-9 players Half Field Z A B Z Z 1. A runs forward at pace and commits the defender to create an overlap for B. 2. Initially the defender Z marks A only. 3. Defenders may form a single line up the field about 10m apart. Each group of 2 attackers should attempt the drill against all the defenders. Player with the ball should run at speed to commit the defender. If there is no defender approaching, the ball carrier should continue running. As the defender approaches, the pass should be timed to allow B to score. Attackers should run to the opposite shoulder of the defender to the direction in which the pass is to be directed. Variations / Progression 1. When technique improves allow the defender to move towards A or B.

18 HANDLING Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Pass & Catch Pressure Pass Develop good technique and accuracy of the pass Up to 6 balls 3 players for each ball 10 x 22 metre grid - Place players into three groups. Groups A and B line up facing each other and Group C lines up as shown in the diagram. - Groups A and B should be between 10 and 15 metres apart. - The individual players of Groups A and B stand between 5 and 10 metres apart. Player 1 of Group C runs/jogs down between Groups A and B receiving passes from Group A and passing on to the players opposite in Group B. 2. With the balls now with Group B, player 2 in Group C links a pass from Group B to Group A, player 3 in Group C then links a pass from Group A to Group B. 3. When all players from Group C have gone through the drill, they run around the outside and join the end of Group C. 4. The drill continues. The passer and receiver must communicate. Pass the ball in front of the receiver. Receiver run straight. Demand accuracy from the passer. Variations / Progression 1. Arrange the players so two Group C players are running down the centre at one time. 2. Vary the distance between Group A & B.

Therefore 2 draws and passes two defenders coming from behind, the two players need to score past the third defender. 5. You move from low confrontation to high confrontation. Speed and urgency needed. Passes well directed. Defenders chase realistically, with commitment.

The other two players follow, one behind the other as attackers. 3. The front person of the attackers picks up the ball and draws and passes to the support player who should have moved into space. Players should concentrate on creating space, timing the pass and communication i.e. calling when and where they want the ball e.g. pop left.

21 Ball Familiarisation 181 MODULE: BALL FAMILIARISATION Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Handling Pick & Place To safely secure the ball from the ground 5-8 balls players 20 x 20 metre grid 20m Square Start Finish 1. Players form a single file. The first player picks up each ball in turn, run two metres with it and places them randomly around the grid. 2. The second player begins when the first player is halfway through the grid. 3. The third begins when the second is halfway around and so on. 4. Players rejoin the end of the line after placing the last ball. Balls should be placed firmly with two hands. They must NOT be dropped or rolled. Player should practise placing the ball both on the left and right sides. Variations / Progression 1. Diving on the ball and back onto feet.

22 HANDLING Category: Picking ball off the ground Name of Drill: Contact squares 2 Objective: Getting the ball off the ground Equipment: 4 balls per group Group Size: 8+ 10m x 10m 10m C A 10m B D 1. Players are paired up and placed on each corner of the grid with a ball about 1-2m in front of them. 2. On the coach s signal each pair runs to the opposite corner of the grid. 3. The player arriving then baseball slides on the ball, gets to their feet and the second quickly comes into secure and drive. 4. Each pair drives in a controlled manner to the center of the grid making contact with the other players doing the same. 5. Pairs make contact in the congested grid center and either continue to drive through the middle or roll off other pairs on their return to the starting cones. Players sliding onto the ball must get to their feet as quickly as they can. Control the ball. Support player should go around and come in directly behind the player in contact. Variations / Progression 1. Vary by different ways of picking up the ball. 2. Use in tackle situation (turnover).

26 RUNNING Category: Technique Name of Drill: Handling Relay Objective: To improve ball handling techniques Equipment: 1 ball, 4 cones per group Group Size: 3-6 players 40 x 20 metre grid Drill set up: Player groups line up facing the cones which are set out in a line 10 metres apart in front of the groups. Finish Start 40m 10m B A 20m 1. First player sprints out the first 10 metres carrying the ball in two hands in front of them, tucks the ball under the right arm for the second 10 metres, in front of them for the third 10 metres and under the left arm for the fourth 10 metres. 2. When the player reaches the last cone they sprint back carrying the ball in front of them, swerving in and out of the cones, passing the ball at the end to the next player in line who repeats the drill. The player should always feint and then swing away when executing the swerve. Variations / Progression 1. Change angle, obstacles, etc.

27 RUNNING Category: Evasive Running Name of Drill: Shadow Run Objective: To practise quick evasive movement Equipment: One ball for each pair of players Group Size: Any number, even number preferable Dependent on number of players - approximately 20 x 20 metre grid Drill set up: Players form up in pairs - if an odd number, form a group of 3. Sprint! 20m Grid 1. One of each pair has a ball. 2. On the coach s call the ball carrier runs evasively at speed. The fellow group member tries to follow keeping only 1 metre away. 3. Continue for 5-15 seconds depending on the pace desired. Give a similar period of recovery and repeat the drill. Players carry the ball in two hands. Runners keep their heads up and eyes open to avoid running into other players. Variations / Progression 1. On the coach s call, the ball carrier turns; sets and feeds to their partner who becomes the front runner. 2. The ball carrier faces the partner, who tries to remain directly in front of the ball carrier. If the partner is passed, the players swap roles.

Important points for side-step: - leg drive (hard step) - get away (fast step) Player should: - slow down with a short step - bring the balancing foot up slightly in front of the thrusting foot - with both knees bent, and balancing foot on the toes, push thrusting foot out to one side and plant it hard on the ground. - when the foot lands, lean the body back the other way and drive hard with the leg, making the next step as fast as possible. 31 LINEOUT Catch with soft hand so the ball is not tapped in an uncontrolled way. Confidence in support players is critical to allow jumper to concentrate only on retrieving the ball. Ball that is caught in two hands should be moved immediately away from the centre line and opponents by pivoting to face halfback - reliant on supporters to assist with this. The rest of the group line up single file, several metres behind the 5 metre line. Hooker Return to Start 5m 1. One at a time, the front person runs forwards and jumps up and across to catch the hooker s throw. 2. Upon catching the throw, the jumper returns the ball to the thrower and then joins the end of the line. 3. The new front player runs forward and repeats the process. Jumpers should: - Have inside shoulder forward and inside the line of the ball so the face is directly behind the ball. - Prepare for jump with hands at chest level. - Concentrate on jumping through with the chest forward and head up. Arms should not be extended until the jumper reaches the top of the jump. The jumper jumps with hands at face height and adjusts arms to meet the ball. Variations / Progression 1. The remaining players are grouped 5m back from the bags. The bags are each given a nominated number m 2 T A nominated player runs in to a specified bag, lifting the bag in the tackle and driving it down the field for 2-3 metres. 2. The two players holding the bag offer resistance. 3. The players are rotated throughout the drill. Head should be to the side with the shoulder as the first point of contact. Tacklers should drive from a low position. Encourage high knee action and short driving steps. Variations / Progression 1. As one player s drive comes to a halt a second player joins the drive with the two players binding and driving together.

57 TACKLING Category: Tackling from behind Name of Drill: Pick Up or Tackle Competition Objective: To practise ball pick up and chasing / tackling from behind/ in front Equipment: 2 cones, 1 or more balls Group Size: The more balls available the greater the number of players can be involved 22 x 22 metre grid Drill set up: 2 lines of players form, each line facing a cone which is positioned metres from the lines and 10m apart. The first runner to the ball picks it up and attempts to score back at the start line. 3. Tacklers should have their head to the side of the legs of the runner. Tacklers first contact must be with the shoulder. Tackler should focus on the shorts of the attacker. The original defender then rejoins the attacking group who again performs the required skill against the new defender. 4. The pattern continues for the length of the grid. Ensure players understanding of required drill and roles within drill. Attacking players create space for support. Must be immediate. Support must be immediate.

63 Variations/progressions 1. Player A places the ball, runs out 10 metres and becomes the defender. Player B picks up, runs towards A, commits the player and passes to C. Player C receives the pass, runs through and places the ball and becomes the defender. Player A joins the attackers. Player D picks up the ball. The drill continues. 2. Player A places the ball, runs out 10 metres, places and becomes the defender. Player B picks up, runs into Player A and recoils. Player C rips and passes to Player D who runs 10 metres, places and becomes the defender. The drill continues. 3. Player A places the ball, runs out 10 metres and becomes the defender. Player B picks up the ball, runs into Player A and hits, and drives then drops before placing the ball. Player C steps over, picks up, passes the ball to Player D who runs 5 metres, places and becomes the new defender. 4. This drill is the same as no.2 above except that instead of a simple rip and pass, two blocks are incorporated. As a result, a mini-maul is formed with the ripper passing to the 6th player who places and becomes the defender. 5. This drill is similar to no.3 above except that the defender, after having the initial ball carrier drive into him and drop, is taken out by the next two attacking players. The next player in-steps over the ball and passes to the final player who runs on, places the ball and becomes the defender. 6. This drill is the same as no.4 except that two more passes are incorporated into the pattern. Thus the mini-maul is set and the remaining players form a mini-backline. The ball is passed along it with the last pass being a switch pass or a pop-pass back inside. The receiver of this pass runs on, places the ball and becomes the defender. 7. This drill is the same as no.5 except that two more passes are incorporated into the pattern. This means that after the mini-ruck is performed, the remaining players form a mini-backline that passes laterally until the last pass. The last pass is then a switch pass or a pop-pass inside. The receiver of this pass runs on, places the ball and becomes the defender.

Players stand on four corners of grid with player A in the middle. 2. Players B, C and D on 3 of the 4 corners have a ball while player E does not. 3. Player A faces player C and as he/she runs toward C, he/she catches a pass from B and gives to E. 4. When A is a couple of metres from C, C passes to A who immediately returns the ball, turns and runs back towards D, catch/passing from E to B. 5. The exercise continues for a set time, a set number of loops, until the middle player drops the ball or until exhaustion. Ensure players don t fall away from their pass. Encourage the players to work themselves hard. Variations / Progression 1. Add another runner so two passes are being performed in the middle of the grid.

69 MODIFIED GAMES GAMES Category: Name of Drill: Objective: Equipment: Group Size: Drill set up: Handling Touch the Ground and Pass To develop communication, movement into space and ball familiarisation cones to mark area, 1 ball 2 even teams of 6-12 players 15 x 15 metre grid or larger for a big groups Players are divided into two equal teams and positioned inside the grid area. 2 15m Grid 15 Touch the ground with the ball 15m Grid 1. The players in the team that have the ball must touch the ball on the ground then pass to a team member. 2. Players in the opposing team have to intercept the ball from the team with the ball. 3. Ball carrier cannot move with the ball. 4. Players are free to move within the boundary. 5. The other team pressures the ball carriers (1 metre away) into bad passes, or try to intercept the ball. 6. If the ball is intercepted or dropped, the other team becomes the passers. 7. First team to complete 6-10 passes (or designated number) gets a point. 8. Once a point is scored, the other team takes possession. 9. The ball carrier can t pass back or to a person who has just passed to them, and there is a three second limit on the time that the ball carrier can hold the ball. The ball carrier should look for two or three options of teammates to pass to. Encourage players to communicate. Players should use all the area.

70 MODIFIED GAMES Players should pass and move into space. Decrease or increase the size of your grid depending on the skill level of the players. Variations / Progression 1. Limit the type of passes that players are able to give e.g. no netball passes or overhead passes. 2. Decrease the time that a player is able to hold the ball.
