5 Understanding Decimals Lesson 1 VOCABULARY TARGET decimal number I can read and write decimal numbers. A decimal number is a base-ten number written with a decimal point. A decimal number has two parts: a whole number on the left of the decimal point and a part of a whole to the right of the decimal point quarts 0.3 pounds 14.1 centimeters Each of the measurements above are decimal numbers. The position of each digit in the decimal number determines how large the decimal number is. hundreds tens ones tenths hundredths B2 Lesson 1 Understanding Decimals 1

6 The pitcher of juice contains 1 whole quart, 7 tenths of a quart and 5 hundredths of a quart. You can use models to show this decimal number measurement: 1 whole tenths + 5 hundredths The apple weighs 0.3 pounds. Shade in the model to show this amount. + 0 whole + 3 tenths To write and read decimals in word form, separate the whole number from the part of a whole using the word and. 16 Fraction and Decimal Models Lesson 3 VOCABULARY TARGET equivalent numbers I can use models to connect equivalent fractions and decimals. In the last lesson you learned how to write fractions for decimal numbers. Each fraction had a denominator of 10 or 100 representing tenths or hundredths. Fill in the fraction that is equal to the decimal given in each oval. 0.6 = 0.82 = 3.15 = 4.9 = Every fraction has an equivalent decimal number. Equivalent numbers are two numbers that have equal values. Each pair of numbers in the ovals shown above are equivalent numbers. Jake has _ 1 of a candy bar. He wants to know what decimal number represents the 2 amount of candy bar he has. He uses a model. 1 out of 2 = 1 _ 2 12 Fraction And Decimal Models B2 Lesson 3

17 In order to write _ 1 as a decimal number, it is best to split his model into ten equalsized pieces. This is because parts of wholes in decimal numbers are written as 2 tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. 1_ _ 2 5 = The fraction 5 can be written as 0.5. Jake has 0.5 of a candy bar. 10 1_ 2 = 5 10 = 0.5 Nelly has _ 3 5 of her fence painted. How does she write _ 3 5 as a decimal number? In order to write _ 3 as a decimal number, she can separate her 5 model into tenths. To get 10 equal-sized parts of fence she will need to split each of the five boards in half to create 10 total parts. She has painted 10 multiplication. of the fence. Check your answer with 2 3_ 5 = 10 2 The denominator of the new fraction is tenth so it can be written as a decimal number = B2 Lesson 3 Fraction And Decimal Models 13

18 Some fractions cannot be written with a denominator of 10. In order to write the fraction as a decimal number, you may need a denominator of 100, 1000 or even 10,000. Look at _ 1 as an example. 4 = = = What is _ 3 as a decimal number? 4 = 3_ 4 = 100 = decimal number new fraction 14 Fraction And Decimal Models B2 Lesson 3

28 Comparing Decimals TARGET Lesson 5 I can compare two or more decimal numbers. Comparing decimal numbers is like comparing whole numbers. You can use models, number lines or place values to compare decimal numbers. Decimal numbers that do not have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point can be compared by inserting zeros to hold place value. = 0.4 = 0.40 Comparing Decimals Using Models Karen bought 0.6 pounds of bananas. Myrell bought 0.8 pounds of apples. Who bought more pounds of fruit? Karen < Myrell Myrell bought more pounds of fruit than Karen. 24 Comparing Decimals B2 Lesson 5

29 Larry bought 0.57 pounds of fruit. Did he buy more or fewer pounds of fruit than Karen? Karen Larry Larry bought fewer pounds of fruit than Karen. Comparing Decimals Using Number Lines Number lines are very useful when comparing decimals. The numbers on a number line get larger from left to right. > small large 1 Listed below are the amounts three girls hair grew in one month: Sarah 0.2 centimeters Paula 0.13 centimeters Ana 0.24 centimeters Order the names from least to greatest hair growth. 40 Estimating with Fractions and Decimals TARGET Lesson 7 I can solve problems by estimating fraction and decimal amounts. It is important to be able to estimate with fractions and decimals. Estimating helps you do math in your head quickly. One way to estimate is to round to the nearest benchmark. Benchmarks are numbers that are easy to work with. Estimating with Fractions Fractions less than 1 have a numerator smaller than the denominator. Fractions less than 1 can be estimated by rounding them to the benchmarks 0, _ 1 and _ _ Estimating With Fractions And Decimals B2 Lesson 7

41 Estimating with Mixed Numbers When estimating with mixed numbers, you should round to the nearest whole number.
