There were many fun activities and delicious snacks! We would like to thank you for your continued participation in the learning process of our students. There are many ways you can be involved in your child s education!! As we look toward a new month please review the calendar of events provided within this newsletter. May is upon us and it looks like our Spring weather is finally making an appearance! As much as I love the warming weather, it brings a few challenges to the learning process. With over a month left of school, students are conflicted between the excitement of the outdoor activities available and their school work. Behavior is affected by the excitement of a soon to arrive summer break! We need your help! Please continue to have conversations with your child about how important their learning is and continued effort will help them be better prepared for the next year. Maintain your efforts to establish good school work skills afterschool. Your efforts now are critical to the continued success for your child. To help you with some ideas as we prepare for the spring and summer months, let me share some key things you can have your child do at home. READING AT HOME This is easy!! Please continue to spend time reading with your child or having your child read to you on a daily basis. MATH AT HOME Many of you are aware that students now have access to Dreambox Learning, math software that can tell what students know already and what they still need to learn. This is a fun and easy way for your child to pick up math knowledge they need to learn or learn advanced math skills!! Only thirty minutes a week is shown to help children make a lot of growth. Start now and work through the summer and I think you will be so proud of your student s knowledge!! The website is: login/kdz3/carpenters Also, here are some grade-level activities: Kindergarten The week of May 4th is Teacher Appreciation Week. During this week we celebrate our teachers and staff with various activities. Please join us in recognizing all that they do on a daily basis in our classroom in hallways. Have your child count to 100 by ones, fives and tens. Count objects like windows, doors, etc. Pour different amounts of water into 3 or 4 glasses that are the same size. Compare the amounts of water using terms such as more, less, or the same. First Grade Play the number game. Guess my number between 20 and 30. Use the words more or less as clue words. The clip art and graphics used are from Microsoft Office

2 Play addition war. Remove all face cards from a deck of playing cards and divide the remaining cards between two players. Each player puts 2 cards down and the person with the highest sum wins all four cards. Second Grade Practice identifying coins and their values. Using their own money, have your child count and decide if they have enough to make a certain purchase. Have your child figure out the fair share of candy, snacks, food, etc. when splitting it between 2 or more people. This sharpens counting, adding, subtracting, and sometimes, fraction skills. Third Grade Let your child know what time you are leaving for an event, and have him/her calculate how much time there is between the current time and the time you are leaving. While in the car, practice mental math. (Ex: 2 X 2 1 =) Play card games Turn over two cards at a time and figure out the sum, the difference and the product of the two numbers turned over. (You can remove the face cards first or use them as 11, 12, and 13; Aces are equal to 1) Fourth Grade Have your child calculate what time to start getting ready and what time to leave your house in order to get to an event on time. Make or use already made flash cards to review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Fifth Grade Practice math facts in the car. Talk about number families. Ex: 3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-4=3, 7-3=4 Collect grocery slips. Have your child categorize items into meat, produce, dairy, etc Add up amount spent in each category. Make a graph to determine which costs the most. Thank you in advance for continuing to support our work for the success of your child! Please, continue to keep in touch with us on a regular basis. 3 All Carpenter library books are due back to school by Wednesday, May 27 Field Day Tuesday, June 2 On Tuesday, June 2 our students will enjoy a planned field day in the afternoon. Students will rotate to different stations outdoors to participate in fun activities. Help is needed in running the stations. Please contact Mr. Welter if you are interested in helping by stopping by the school in the morning or via at: welterpb@mps.k12.mi.us

4 Please bring your favorite garden clean-up tools on Saturday, May 9th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. to help clean up the school garden and beds around the school. We will meet at the school garden. 2nd Grade Music Concert When: Monday, May 18 Time: 1 p.m. Where: Carpenter School Gym This year s school carnival will be held Friday, May 15 from 5:30-8:00. There will be food and games for the entire family. Included will be pizza, cotton candy, soda, water and more. All Items will be available at a nominal cost. Games will require 1-2 tickets or a wristband (unlimited games). Cost for wristbands will be $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets will cost 5/$1 in advance or 4/$1 at the door. There will also be a silent auction. Please consider helping to make this year another success by volunteering to work a shift during the carnival. Contact the office for more information.

5 PYP NEWS Hello families! We have had a great month of PYP learning at Carpenter! I am very excited to share that our application for candidacy for the Primary Years Programme at Carpenter Elementary School has been accepted!!! The following was included in our acceptance letter: Carpenter Elementary School is a candidate school* for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Carpenter Elementary School believes is important for our students. This is a BIG achievement for our building! We look forward to continuing our journey towards authorization with the Primary Years Programme! Our Learner Profile focus for April has been RISK -TAKER! Students who are RISK- TAKERS have confidence to try new things. They try to solve problems in a lot of ways. They have courage to tell people what they think is right. RISK-TAKERS show: independence, confidence, enthusiasm and integrity. For the month of MAY, our school Learner Profile focus will be BALANCED. Students who are BALANCED understand the importance of physical and mental balance and personal well-being. Students who are balanced are healthy and aware that eating properly and exercising is important in their lives. They spend time doing many different things. I don t have time to work out. I haven t read a book for pleasure in a long time. We re just too busy. Hobbies? Who has time for hobbies? I don t have time to go to the doctor. These are all familiar phrases! All are indicative of the need for balance in our lives. Being wellbalanced is an important life skill one worthy of development and attention even as our children are growing. How can parents help to develop students that are BALANCED? *Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structured activities *Spend time playing physical games with your child for about 30 minutes a day *Discuss the different food groups with your child. Decide if you are eating balanced at meal timej! *During less structured time, also be aware of the activities that your child is participating in. Too much time in front of the computer, video games, movies, or television is not desirable. All kids need to do a variety of things.
