1 DRAMATIC PLAY/HOUSEKEEPING Center Setting Up the Dramatic Play/Housekeeping Center This center is typically the housekeeping or family area of the room. However, it should be an area that can be changed easily. Based on a theme or given a variety of props, small groups of children can successfully play in this area with very little facilitation. The props in this area should be changed periodically to match the theme or interests of children. You can create a home, restaurant, doctor s office, hairdresser, vet s office, fire station, camp out in the woods, etc. Store extra materials and furniture in a closet or other room. All of the materials should be ready at a minimum the day before. Dramatic play/housekeeping centers are typically used during free time or during specific center time. A time can be selected when there are several centers or activities available from which the children can choose. Skills Typically Developed in the Dramatic Play/Housekeeping Center The Dramatic Play/Housekeeping Center can provide each child with opportunities for pretend role playing. exploring emotions vocabulary development sharing & turn-taking using creativity social skill development resolving conflicts pretend play & role play practicing skills dress-up & make believe using imagination imitation acting out life experiences self-help skills receptive & expressive language development Teacher s Friend, a Scholastic Company. 27
2 Dramatic Play/Housekeeping Center Basic Materials, Toys and Equipment: play kitchen measuring cups/spoons dress-up clothes costumes pots and pans aprons and dish towels jewelry sunglasses hats/wigs shoes and/or boots child-sized furniture mirror recipe cards dolls and doll accessories pencils kid's magazines child-sized ironing board laundry basket coupons cash register telephone/telephone book grocery list pads cleaning set purses & wallets albums wipe-off whiteboard TV Guides computer clock calendars magazine rack play food dishes/bowls sticky notes/memo pads mailbox suitcase utensils/silverware puppet theater mop, broom, etc. empty grocery boxes/containers cookbooks (could be made by children) good night stories (read to dolls) pictures of children and their families The list is endless depending on the type of area you are trying to create.
