1 About this application Welcome to the new Aboriginal Heritage Inquiry System (AHIS). This system provides information concerning Aboriginal Heritage in Western Australia. When you first visit the new site, you may be prompted to download Silverlight. If you are prompted to add Silverlight please follow the instructions to download and install, as this is needed to be able to use the new AHIS. Notes on browser/system support: 1. Chrome no longer supports Silverlight so cannot be used. 2. On Windows 10, Microsoft Edge does not support Silverlight so Internet Explorer or Firefox need to be used instead. 3. AHIS is not intended for use on smartphones or tablets. Minimum system requirements are based on Silverlight requirements which can be found on the Microsoft Silverlight Getting Started website. 2 What s new? AHIS provides several new and updated features: A new map toolbar menu, including the following buttons: Zoom In, Zoom Out, Pan Map, Previous Map Extent, Next Map Extent, Zoom to WA, Identify, Show Coordinates, Overview Map, and Search within Custom Drawn Rectangle. Common mapping tools will not be elaborated, e.g. zoom in, zoom out, pan. Previous/Next Map Extent: Previous Map Extent zooms the map to the extent that it was previously set to. If this has been used the Next Map Extent tool is enabled and this zooms the map to the next map extent. Zoom to WA: zooms the map to the extent of Western Australia. Identify: provides the ability to show a list of features that are in the map based on where a user clicks or drags a box on the map. Show Coordinates: displays a window that shows both the MGA94 Easting/Northing coordinate (in metres) and the GDA94 Longitude/Latitude coordinate (in degrees) of the current mouse position. Overview map: displays a window showing the current location of the map within Western Australia. Search within Custom Drawn Rectangle: provides the ability to search within a userdrawn box for Registered Sites, Other Heritage Places or Surveys. Before it can be used, one of the Search for or Find specific options must be selected from the What do you want to do? menu. Several things have been changed: map, legend, search and report functionality have been enhanced. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 3
2.1 Map and Legend has additional functionality Search Area right-click on a search area to zoom to it or to perform a Heritage search. Aerial Photos zoom the map in further to view detailed aerial photography. These should be referred to (if available) in preference to Bing maps as they are more accurate and usually more detailed. Click the Aerial Photo Details button to view more detail relating to the aerial photography currently visible in the map. Some remote parts of Western Australia do not have aerial photo coverage; for these areas the Bing Maps satellite base map can be used. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 4
Bing Maps select from several base map types. Layer transparency use the sliders to change the transparency of the main map layers. This can help make some map features more visible; e.g. aerial photography can be viewed underneath a topographic map by making the Topographic Maps layer more transparent (by moving the slider to the left). These are the sliders Map layers load dynamically as map layers are turned on or off or as the map is zoomed or panned, the main map layers each load dynamically and progressively, and a progress bar (towards bottom of map) indicates when all layers have been loaded. More details about search results are shown in the map and in the search results window. To view more details in the map about individual search results or the search area, mouse over the feature and a window will appear showing details. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 5
2.2 Search Results Additional information (columns) are now provided as part of the search results Move the columns by clicking on a column heading and dragging and dropping. Sort the column contents in ascending or descending order by clicking on the column heading. Note: Registered Sites and Other Heritage Places are now searched for separately. So, for example, a search for Registered Sites will not show Other Heritage Places. 2.3 Reports Create Reports from Selected Search Results After performing a search, you may create a report of all search results or from selected search results, in either PDF format or as an interactive page: All Search Results Report: click on the Printable all results button Selected Search Results: select one or more features from the results list, then click the Printable selected results button From the Report Format list, choose PDF to download the report to your computer as a PDF file, or Interactive to open the report in an interactive web page Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 6
2.3.2 Interactive Report Features The report provides the ability to navigate through pages on the report, save and print. All you need to do is click on the appropriate icon. 1. Navigation - use the arrows at the top of the report to view the report pages. 2. Save - click on the save icon to save to your computer as a PDF file 3. Print - click on the print icon Export to Excel The search results can also be exported to a spreadsheet, using the Export to Excel button. This will create a spreadsheet file that includes all of the information that is shown in the search results window. Note: exporting the spatial information directly from AHIS is not currently supported. However, a full spatial dataset can be downloaded from the DAA website (via Site Search > Download Site Information) Search by Shapefile or Coordinates file Searching based on a shapefile or a coordinates file (spreadsheet) is now supported. See sections below for details. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 7
3 How to Use What do you want to do? What do you want to do? provides the ability to zoom to a particular area, search for Heritage features within a particular area, or search for specific Heritage features, simply by clicking on a pull down menu. Figure 1 - What do you want to do? To start click on the first pull down menu, once you do this additional information will dynamically appear. 3.1 Zoom to an Area By selecting Zoom to an area, the second pull down menu dynamically provides the following choices: Once a selection is made additional selection criteria may be presented, in the example below Native Title Application has been selected. After selecting a particular feature, click the Go! button to zoom to it: Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 8
3.2 Search for Heritage Features Registered Sites, Other Heritage Places, and Heritage Surveys can be searched for, either based on a search area (using the Search for option) or based on a text-based search (using the Find specific option) Search Results Once a search is complete a list of search results will be displayed on screen, similar to the one shown below. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 9
From the search results window a more detailed report can be viewed using the Printable all results or Printable selected results buttons. Individual search result features can be zoomed to by first selecting them in the search results and then clicking the Zoom to selected button 3.3 Commonly Utilised Search Features There are several search criteria which are commonly used throughout the system: Local Government Authority Mining Tenement Native Title Application Native Title Determination Native Title ILUA Petroleum Application Petroleum Title Street Address 250k Map Sheet (name) 250k Map Sheet (number) Coordinates Shapefile Once, you have clicked on the search criteria, additional choices may appear. Therefore, the following sections will provide details/definitions of these choices. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 10
3.3.1 Local Government Authority Local Government Authority provides the following choices: Lists cities, shires and towns Mining Tenement Mining Tenement provides the following choices: Lists mining tenement ID, with prefix, mining field and folio listed separately Native Title Application Native Title Application provides the following choices: Lists Native Title application name, with NNTT number and Federal Court number in brackets Native Title Determination Native Title Determination provides the following choices: Lists Native Title determination name, with NNTT number and Federal Court number in brackets Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 11
3.3.5 Native Title ILUA Native Title ILUA (Indigenous Land Use Agreement) provides the following choices: Petroleum Application Petroleum Application provides the following choices: Lists ILUA name, with NNTT number and Federal Court number in brackets Lists Petroleum Application IDs Petroleum Title Petroleum Title provides the following choices: Lists Petroleum Title IDs Street Address Provides the ability to enter address information. When entering a street name, only enter the name and do not include the street type (e.g. enter Smith, not Smith St ). Enter Street Name only; do not include Street Type e.g. Enter Smith, not Smith St Occasionally an address may not be found. If this is the case, either manually search using the Search within Custom Drawn Rectangle tool, or a search across an entire street is possible by only entering the street name and town/suburb (e.g. instead of Number: 151, Street: Royal, Suburb: East Perth try Street: Royal Suburb: East Perth ) k Map Sheet Provides the ability to search by map sheet name or map sheet number: Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 12
Lists Map Sheet Names Lists Map Sheet Numbers Coordinates Provides the ability to zoom to or search within an area based on a list of user-defined coordinates. Coordinates can be entered on screen or uploaded from a file, in either MGA94 Easting/Northing metres format or GDA94 Longitude/Latitude degrees format. Coordinates can be in the form of an area or a line. If in line format, a search distance must be entered. This is the distance from the line that will be searched within. Coordinates provides the following choices: Add from file Add Point Easting Zone Northing Search Distance (for Lines) Longitude Latitude Shape Type Add from file: provides the ability to upload a list of coordinates from a file. See below for more details. Add point: adds another row to the window so that another coordinate can be entered. A minimum of two coordinates is required (two points will define the upper left-hand and lower-right hand corners of a box). Shape type: allows coordinates to define an area or a line. If they define a line, a search distance must also be entered. Search Distance: only visible when Line shape type is chosen. Defines the distance from the line within which features will be searched for. Distance can be in metres or kilometres. After entering Easting and Northing coordinates, please also ensure you choose the correct MGA Zone that they are in, from the Zone list. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 13
Longitude and Latitude coordinates can be entered in either decimal degrees, degrees/decimal minutes or degrees/minutes/seconds format. Latitude coordinates must be in degrees south (i.e. without negative symbol) Add Coordinates from File Add from file provides the ability to upload a list of coordinates from a file. The file needs to be in CSV (comma-separated) format. When creating the spreadsheet file (e.g. in Microsoft Excel), ensure the following conditions are met: The Eastings/Longitudes are in the first column and the Northings/Latitudes are in the second column The first row contains column headers (e.g. Eastings, Northings ) For example, here are a set of Easting/Northing coordinates entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet: To convert the spreadsheet file into CSV format, when saving the spreadsheet file choose Save As and then choose CSV (Comma delimited) from the Save as type list. For example, in Microsoft Excel: Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 14
To upload the CSV coordinates file, click the Add from file button, then navigate to the CSV file and click Open. The coordinates will be loaded into the coordinates window (see example below). Choose the appropriate shape type (area or line, if line then also enter in a search distance from the line), and if loading Eastings/Northings, choose the correct MGA Zone from the Zone list. Here are the set of Easting/Northing coordinates from the above example loaded into AHIS: Shapefile Provides the ability to search based on a shapefile loaded from your PC. You will first be asked to select the shapefile that you wish to upload and search on. When selecting you need to select at least a.shp,.dbf and.prj file (select these files by holding down your Shift key and then clicking each file). Note the following constraints on loading shapefiles: Requires a.shp,.dbf and.prj file. Only supports shapefiles that are in the following coordinate systems: o MGA94 Eastings/Northings. o GDA94 Longitude/Latitude. Only supports 2 dimensional shapefiles that are in polygon, line or points format. Only supports searching on one shapefile at a time. Very large shapefiles (i.e. with a lot of vertices) may not load. If this occurs please contact DAA for assistance. Department of Aboriginal Affairs Page 15
