Great Yarmouth in the Second World War The story of Great Yarmouth in the Second World War is one of change. Townspeople were faced with many changes during the war: repeated enemy bombing, extensive fortification of the town, suspension of both fishing and holiday industries, large-scale evacuation, rationing, and night-time black-outs. Long-term changes were equally marked. The Second World War changed the way of life for Great Yarmouth people for ever. Great Yarmouth under attack. Great Yarmouth was heavily bombed during the war. It was bombed more than any other coastal town in the country. Great Yarmouth was an obvious target for attack by German bombers. It was an important port with a large fishing fleet and major industries. It was also open to attack. Great Yarmouth lay on the east coast within easy reach of enemy aeroplanes. It was hard to detect raiders as they came across the sea. 217 townspeople were killed in air raids between 1940 and The bombing destroyed a total of 237 properties other properties were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished. Much of the damage occurred in a large area of narrow alleyways called the Rows. Great Yarmouth people had lived in the Rows for hundreds of years and most of the town s population still lived in the tightly-packed lanes. The Rows were extremely vulnerable to attack by incendiary bombs because fire could spread so easily.

Air-raids Great Yarmouth was subjected to different kinds of air raids during the war. The most common type were known as Tip n run raids. One or two enemy bombers appeared from the sea, dropped their bombs upon the town, and escaped before they could be intercepted by fighter planes. At the end of 1940 and during the first months of 1941 there were some very heavy air-raids. These raids are often called the blitz (the German word for lightning). Large numbers of bombers attacked the town during the night. One of the worst raids came on 8 th April Thousands of incendiary and high explosive bombs were dropped on Great Yarmouth. 17 people were killed, 68 were injured, and large areas of the town were destroyed. The blitz ended in May 1941 but there were occasional heavy raids in Towards the end of the war V weapons were used. These were rockets which carried large high explosive warheads. V1 s were first fired in Fortunately, they were not very accurate and caused little damage to the town. Bombs Various different bombs were dropped upon Great Yarmouth High Explosive (Sprengbomb) High Explosive bomb These contained between 50kg and 500kg of explosives. Damage was caused by a single powerful blast. About 1000 High Explosive bombs were dropped on Great Yarmouth during the war. Incendiary bomb (Brandbomb) Incendiary bomb These were filled with combustible chemicals like magnesium which spread fires upon impact. Incendiaries were dropped in clusters of up top 72 bombs. This made it hard to fight all the fires at once.

Explosive incendiary bomb (Strengbranebomb). These bombs started fires like normal incendiary weapons. However, they also contained a separate explosive which was timed to go off some time later. The idea was to kill the people who were fighting the fires. Butterfly bomb (Splitter bomb) These were anti-personal bombs. They aimed to kill and injure civilians and to spread terror. The bombs were known as a butterfly bombs because when the bomb was dropped its wings opened and it made a fluttering sound as it fell to the ground. When the wings opened a number of smaller bombs were released. These were scattered over a wide area and were very hard to spot. They exploded when picked up or moved. The Butterfly blitz began in It caused near panic amongst civilians. The bombs landed everywhere and you were never sure when you were close to one. Butterfly Bomb Air-raid defences The armed forces and emergency services could not deal with air-raids on their own. Many civilians joined the Civil Defence Corps to give what help they could. Air Raid Precaution wardens (ARP wardens) were appointed to look after particular areas of every town and city. ARP wardens had many duties. They reported fires, made sure the black-out was observed, warned civilians of danger, gave first-aid, and checked that people behaved properly on the streets and in the shelters. They were also given a lot of information about what to do in case of emergencies. Civilians did many important jobs during the air-raids. They watched for incendiaries, fought fires and cleared rubble, and provided medical help where it was needed. Some people were trained to do these jobs. Others just went out and gave what help they could. It was not uncommon for children to help by watching for fires. This was very dangerous work. There was constant danger of explosions, fire and falling buildings. War-time cigarette card showing women firefighters.

Air-raid shelters Different kinds of air-raid shelter were used during the war. Public shelters provided protection for many people. They were needed to shelter people who were at work or away from home when an air raid began. They were also used by those who did not have a shelter of their own. Anderson shelters were named after the Minister for Home Security at the start of the war. They were dug in people s gardens. They were made from a corrugated iron frame which was sunk into the ground and covered with earth. 2¼ million Anderson shelters were erected during the war. They had some draw-backs. Large families found it very cramped in the shelters and they were liable to flooding. Most importantly, less than one-quarter of the population had a garden in which they could erect an Anderson shelter. In Great Yarmouth the combination of narrow garden-less Rows and the sandy ground meant Anderson shelters were unsuitable for most people. Morrison shelters were named after Herbert Morrison who became Minister for Home Security in They were designed to be used inside houses. They consisted of a steel frame with wire mesh sides. Many people used them as a table during the day. Morrison shelters were issued as a flat-pack with 219 parts and 48 rivets and screws. 500,000 were issued by the end of Most people were given the shelters free. The impact of the air raids The people of Great Yarmouth reacted to the air-raids like people did throughout the country. Despite the terror and uncertainty most people carried on. They went about their daily business and did what was needed to keep the war effort going. People realised that they were important. The war could only be won if factories kept on producing the things that were needed. Air raids made many people even more determined to carry on as normal. People often turned up to work even though their houses had been bombed or relatives had been killed or injured.

Change Great Yarmouth was not only faced with the danger of air-raids. There was also a real threat of invasion. Great Yarmouth was an important port. It had the facilities that the enemy would need if they invaded. This part of the East Anglian coast is very flat. It was an ideal place for and invasion fleet to land. Defence and Evacuation Great Yarmouth changed completely. The town was heavily fortified. The beaches were mined and scaffolding was used to stop tanks from moving up the beach. A hole was blown through the pier. The end of the pier was connected to the rest by a rope bridge. This could be destroyed in the event of an invasion. Pill-boxes were placed at strategic points. They provided protection from which heavily-armed soldiers could attack invaders. Check-points were set up all around the town. Everyone who entered or left had their identification cards checked. Wartime Great Yarmouth Front, 22 nd July 1942, by Kenneth Hobson. This picture shows Great Yarmouth s sea-front defences. Great Yarmouth became a defence and evacuated area. Before the war the town had a population of 54,000. During the war the population was reduced to 20,000. Everyone who did not do an essential job was supposed to leave. Most children were evacuated to safe places in the area. The evacuation helped to save lives. The air raids would have killed many more people if the narrow rows had been full of people. Nonetheless, many people did remain in the town throughout the war. Some adults and children refused to leave. Other children did not like being away from home and returned to Great Yarmouth during the war. Total war The whole country was geared to fighting the war. Pleasure boats which had taken holiday-makers on coastal cruises were used to carry supplies to and from the Royal Navy ships moored in the harbour. All non-essential production in factories ended. Grouts silk works was a famous Great Yarmouth business. During the war it made bandages and parachute material. People were faced with a lot of uncomfortable changes. There was a black-out to stop enemy bombers finding the town. Black paint and thick black curtains were

used to hide house lights. Street lights were turned off and car headlights were dimmed, causing many accidents. Tins of Black out Black. This was used for blacking out the glass of windows. Food, clothes and fuel were rationed. Everyone was given ration books. These contained coupons which were handed to the shop-keeper when you bought something. They only allowed you to buy a certain amount of a thing at a time. This made sure that there was enough to go round. Things were in short supply because so many resources were needed to fight the war. Factories had to make things for the armed forces rather than civilians. It was also difficult to import goods from overseas. German submarines, called U-boats, attacked and sunk many of the ships carrying supplies to Britain. Wartime booklet titled Preserves from the garden - Growmore bulletin number 3. Many leaflets and booklets were published to help people make the most of their food. Most people had a healthy diet during the war. Fear of enemy attack was increased by the threat of poisonous gas. Gas was used as a weapon in the First World War and many soldiers had been killed and badly injured. By the time of the Second World War far more lethal gases had been invented and people were afraid that the Germans would use them to kill large number of civilians.

Everyone was issued with a gas mask and had to carry them everywhere. There were regular drills to make sure that everyone was to putting them. Gas masks were cumbersome and uncomfortable. It was difficult to breath easily through them. Adults and children were given masks which covered the face. Special masks were made for babies. They were placed inside a gas mask which was then sealed. Fortunately, gas was not used as a weapon during the war. Infant s gas mask. The mask had bellows which were pumped to provide air for the child. This was for children under two years old. Long-term changes In many ways the long-term impact of the Second World War was even greater than the short-term changes. The destruction of the Rows Before the war most Great Yarmouth people lived in a series of narrow alleyways called the Rows. These led from the old town walls down to the river Yare. A particular way of life developed in the rows. With so many people living very close together the Rows bustled with life. During the day the cries of tradesmen could be heard as they sold their goods up and down the Rows. Many of those who lived in the rows were quite poor. People often helped their neighbours out when they were in need. There was a sense of belonging to a closeknit community A Yarmouth Row in about A reconstruction in Time and Tide Museum. Large areas of the Rows were destroyed by the bombing. After the war work began to re-house the inhabitants. New houses were built in Great Yarmouth and across the river in Gorleston. These houses had modern facilities such as inside toilets and tapped water and many people were happy to move. However, although many improvements were made the old way of life was lost for ever.

Industrial change The holiday industry recovered quickly after the war. Once the mines were removed from the beaches the holiday-makers poured in. However, other industries were less fortunate. The fishing industry had been an important part of the town s economy for 1000 years. However, it never really recovered from the effects of the war. Before the war the herring fishery had come to rely upon foreign markets. Vast quantities of pickled herring were sold to Germany and Russia. The demand for herring in these countries never picked up after the war. The final nail in the coffin came in the early 1950s when fish-stocks also began to decline. By the mid-1960s the herring fishing had all but disappeared. Some industries such as Grout s silk factory had initially benefited from the war (they began making silk parachutes for the RAF) however these benefits were undermined due to war damage; the factory was badly damaged in 1941 by a German Air Raid.
