Why Would I Want To Smear Beef Fat All Over My Face? It s what s in tallow that makes it a perfect match. A quick look at the full list of tallow s components will help you understand why it is so spectacular. Lauric Acid- Also found in human breast milk and coconut oil, this saturated, fatty acid has significant antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial functions. Monounsaturated fats- These stable lipids are a basic component of tallow and are important to your skin s cell membranes. Oleic acid- Also a component of olive oil, this fatty acid nonessential, but it is mega- moisturizing. Polyunsaturated fats- Polyunsaturated fats are crucial to the composition of Omega 3 and Omega 6, both of which are extremely beneficial to our bodies and skin. Linolenic Acid- This fatty acid is commonly known as Omega 3. It is considered to be essential because our bodies cannot synthesize it. It has both anti- inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Linoleic Acid- This fatty acid is commonly known as Omega 6. It s also considered to be essential. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)- This is a natural trans- fat, and is found in useful quantities in grass- fed meats and fats. Research by the University of Wisconsin shows that the best source of CLA is dairy and meat products from grass- fed cows, because they produce up to 500% more CLA than cows fed typical confinement rations. Natural CLA has significant health benefits, including anti- oxidant and anti- carcinogenic properties. Some studies also link intake of CLA with increased weight loss. Saturated Fats- These highly stable lipids form the basis of tallow composition, and contribute to a lot of the benefits of tallow in both soap and cream manufacture. You could say that saturated fats are the most heroic component of this super skincare ingredient.
Palmitic Acid- This is classified as a type of saturated fat, and is the same fatty acid that is found in palm oil. Studies indicate that this fatty acid has no negative effects if it is consumed in combination with linoleic acid (which it is always naturally found in combination with). Palmitic acid is a natural and major component of healthy human sebum. Stearic Acid- This is also classified as a saturated fat. It is a common component of animal fats, but it also can be found in some vegetable fats, notably cocoa butter and shea butter. Studies indicate that consumption for this fatty acid has no effect on cholesterol levels. Like palmitic acid, stearic acid is a major component of healthy human sebum. Myristic Acid- This saturated fatty acid appears to have antioxidant properties, and is widely found in both plant and animal products, including human breast milk. It has also been shown to have cancer protective properties. Palmitoleic acid- Palmitoleic acid is also known as Omega 7. Its skin protective properties include moisturization and the prevention of oxidative damage. Tallow is also rich in vitamins A, D, K, and E, all of which nourish the skin directly. It is also high in minerals, and cholesterol, and has naturally photo- protective properties. One might even call it the ultimate skin food. Now that you know the individual components of tallow, it s time for you to learn exactly what they do and why they re so terrific. Saturated fats: The saturated fats and saturated fatty acids present in tallow are what contribute to the stiffness and integrity of your skin s cell membranes. In other words, the saturated fats and fatty acids found in tallow can help to keep your skin firmer, tighter, and more resistant to wrinkling. In addition, when your skin s cell membranes have plenty of saturated fat in them, they have a much easier time protecting your skin against dulling damage from free radicals. These saturated fats are very necessary for skin to function properly. Remember, properly functioning skin is healthy skin, and healthy skin is radiant skin!
Antioxidants: You ve already read about the accelerated ageing that free radicals can cause, but did you know that they can also initiate a process of deterioration of your skin s structural support (even if you are providing your skin with an adequate amount of saturated fat for strong cell membranes) and wreak havoc on your skin s elasticity and suppleness. Free Radicals are one of the number one causes of the fine lines, wrinkles, and the sagging skin that can appear around a woman s eyes and chin as she ages. Fortunately, the myristic acid, palmitoleic acid, conjugated linoleic acid, and linolenic acid in tallow all pack the powerful antioxidant punch necessary to help your skin cells fight off such dire damage. Vitamins: As previously mentioned, the vitamins that grass fed beef tallow is naturally rich in are a great source of skin food. They also each provide a unique and wonderful range of natural benefits to your skin. Specifically, applying vitamin A topically can help your skin maintain moisture, which is good because dry skin is dull, damage and wrinkle- susceptible skin. It can also fade dark spots and smooth out skin with a rough texture. Applying vitamin D topically can reduce acne, boost elasticity, lessen the severity of dark spots, and reduce the appearance of very fine lines that can pop up around your eyes. Furthermore, skin that is low on vitamin D tends to look dull and sallow, so getting enough can enhance the radiance of your skin and give you the type of glow women spend big money on countless bronzers and foundations to fake! That s not even the best part, though; making sure that your skin gets enough vitamin D can stimulate collagen production without the use of chemicals or soft tissue filler injections! Giving yourself some topical vitamin K serves as the secret to younger, brighter looking eyes. It is the enemy of drab dark circles. It seems to work best in combination with vitamin A, which can fortify delicate under- eye skin, making it harder to see the delicate blood vessels that can cause dark circles. This is no problem for fans of tallow, though, as this particular skincare ingredient supplies your skin with a hearty dose of both! Vitamin E helps skin to retain moisture and its anti- inflammatory property that not can just prevent, but reduce skin damage, even after you ve been in the sun. Its incredible ability to neutralize free radicals has even earned it the nickname the protector.
Omegas 3 and 6: The Omega 3 found in tallow has anti- inflammatory properties that may soothe irritation from and even heal atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne. It s also packed with anti- ageing benefits since it has major antioxidant properties. Omega- 3 fatty acids also contribute to the upkeep of the skin cell membrane, improving the texture and quality of skin. The Omega 6 that tallow can provide bolsters the barrier function of your skin, too, keeping the good stuff in and impurities out. Furthermore, despite all of the recent talk about Omega 6 being bad for you (it just needs to be consumed in a proper ratio with Omega 3, and in tallow the two are naturally well- balanced), a deficiency of it can lead to scaly dry skin that is vulnerable to wrinkles and damage. Omega 7: Remember that phrase, You are what you eat? Well, it applies to your skin cells, as well. You don t hear as much about Omega 7 as you do about Omegas 3 and 6, but it s just as important. Cell tissue actually contains Omega 7 and restoring it, which you can do topically or by ingesting a supplement, essentially feeds the cell part of what it needs to live and grow. Providing your skin with the Omega 7 it requires keeps it moisturized, youthful, and dewy. Oleic and Linoleic acids: Oleic acid, also known as Omega 9, can deliver even more moisture than the most potent commercial night cream, and is great at combating very dry skin (which, again, can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, damage, and dullness). It can enhance the permeability of the skin, which may make it easier for moisture and the other components of tallow to be absorbed into it. Linoleic acid (Omega 6) is important because when skin s sebum is too rich in oleic acid, it becomes thick and sticky. Then, it can clog pores and cause nasty break outs. Linoleic acid counterbalances oleic acid and prevents this from happening. Furthermore, it is another component that is critical to keeping the skin s barrier function working effectively; it is also instrumental in the wound healing process. (Yes, the tiny holes you get when you pop or pinch acne count as wounds, too.) A deficiency in linoleic acid can lead to dry skin and poor wound healing.
Monounsaturated fats: Monounsaturated fats contribute to maintaining an adequate water level in the epidermis. They help supply the ceramides (waxy lipid molecules) and fats that keep the bricks and mortar of the skin healthy and intact. (To go along with the brick wall analogy, think of them as rebar, which provides reinforcement.) This translates into resilient, supple skin that is less itchy due to dryness and more resistant to wrinkling. Antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties: It s no secret that certain bacteria can cause acne outbreaks; that s part of why it s so important to follow a regular cleansing regimen for your skin. Fortunately, the antiviral, antifungal, and anti- bacterial properties found in the lauric acid present in tallow can help combat bacteria- caused acne at the source! These properties of lauric acid are part of why some people use cocoa butter for skincare, but cocoa butter isn t suitable for all skin types; it just can t hold a candle to the perfectly balanced components of tallow. Triglycerides: Triglycerides offer multi- functional benefits to keep skin looking fresh and young, including moisturization and protection. Not to mention, they re also naturally occurring in the human body; sebum is made up of lipids, of which 41% are in the form of triglycerides. The lipids of tallow are principally in the form of triglycerides, which is how fatty acids are usually configured in nature. (If you re following the Paleo diet, you probably know by now that nature tends to know what our bodies need best ) Both tallow and sebum consist primarily of triglycerides, which allow for easy absorption of other nutrients present in tallow s composition. As you can see it all makes for fantastic skincare that works for all skin types and ages.
The Perfect Match If even after getting to know what the undisputed evidence says about Paleo skincare and grass fed beef tallow, you re still too hung up on the source of tallow to try it, maybe this will change your mind: The taboo against using animal products in skin care products is fairly recent. It was only around the time that a movement emerged to remove saturated fat (and meats) from our diets that a similar movement emerged to remove animal products from our skincare. People of the past weren t so detached from the sources of their life necessities, like food, soaps, detergents, and even clothing. They used rendered tallow from all sorts of grazing animals to make soaps and body balms, because it was inexpensive, effective and readily available. People didn t frown upon the practice of washing themselves with tallow based products, because it was a way to make the most of the life of the animal, to save money, to look after themselves, and to ensure that very little of their cherished livestock went to waste. Not to mention, tallow soaps are fantastically nourishing for the skin! Now- a- days, the fat trimmed from your favorite cuts of beef at the butcher shop tends to go right into the garbage and rot. What a waste! Even if you are a vegetarian, it is still reasonable to support the use of tallow soaps, because they are a way to make the most of the lives of the animals that would have been killed as part of the meat industry. Many people think it is odd to include animal fats in personal care products, but the truth is that some form of tallow is already present in many commercial skincare products. It just isn t discussed much, because tallow is an all- natural skincare ingredient that cannot be patented, and therefore cannot make major companies major profits. Usually, it s labeled as sodium tallowate (the first ingredient in Ivory soap) or stearic acid. These ingredients are much more processed than and cannot provide the same benefits as pure, natural, tallow that hasn t been put through any extra treatments. They re also not as wholesome and nourishing, which means that they cannot provide the anti- ageing, moisturizing, and skin- fortifying benefits that true grass- fed tallow can.
Furthermore, humans are also animals, not plants. Thus, the arguments against using grass fed beef tallow cleansing and moisturizing are illogical and unfounded. In addition to containing very little saturated fats, most plant products do not have the same levels of other nutrients- like the vitamins A, K, and D that are abundant in tallow- necessary for healthy skin. Why would you let commercial skincare trick you into paying more and getting less? Why let them profit off of trying to simulate the things your epidermis needs with chemicals, when you can get all of the things your epidermis needs from true skin food like tallow? If you ve decided to take on the challenge of embracing the Paleo lifestyle, you ve got to fully commit. Feed your skin with the same high- quality nourishment and nutrients that you re feeding your body on the Paleo diet, with Paleo Skincare that gets the job done.
