3 Overview This document provides information to help identify DataCore Fibre Channel Ports and match their corresponding Windows Device to be able, if required, to re-install a third-party Vendor s own Fibre Channel Driver (i.e. if required to connect to the Vendor s own Back End Storage Array); or to install the DataCore Fibre Channel Driver after adding a new Fibre Channel Port to an already-installed and configured DataCore Server. 4 Notes The DataCore Fibre Channel driver While it is not a requirement to stop the SANsymphony software before replacing the DataCore Fibre Channel driver, caution is advised if you don t. SANsymphony has no way to detect that a DataCore Fibre Channel driver on one of its ports is about to be replaced; so if a mistake is made (i.e. the wrong Fibre Channel Port driver is replaced by accident) then this may cause mirrors to break and/or Hosts to lose access to one or more of their Virtual Disk paths. DataCore recommend that if you are unsure, then stop the SANsymphony software first so that if there are any mistakes are made they can easily be resolved without unexpectedly interrupting normal Host access. Third-party vendor Fibre Channel drivers Always refer to the Qualified Hardware Components document: And ensure that the Fibre Channel hardware is supported by SANsymphony and able to take the DataCore Fibre Channel driver. Also make sure there is no third-party vendor failover software installed on the DataCore Server (that may be controlling the Fire Channel ports). This rule can be ignored if using Microsoft s own MPIO as long as any third-party vendors MPIO Device Specific Modules (DSMs) are removed. SANsymphony uses the MS MPIO subsystem to manage mirror paths, so should not be removed. Updating the Fibre Channel driver is disruptive, so if these vendor-installed Fibre Channel ports are connected to Backend Storage Arrays, disconnect the storage first from these ports whose drivers are being replaced, until the DataCore driver has been applied, then the storage can be reconnected again. Mixing drivers on Multi-ported HBAs Multi-ported Fibre Channel Host Bus Adaptors (where each port shows up as its separate Storage Controller in Device Manager) is supported with a DataCore driver on one port and a third-party driver on another. However if third-party failover software is used to connect to a Storage Array behind the DataCore Server, check with the vendor to make sure that this is supported by them. Page 4

6 Identifying the Fibre Channel device Using the SANsymphony Console From the SANsymphony Console the Fibre Channel Port s PCI location can be obtained from the Info tab within the Server port Details. See the Server port Details section from the SANsymphony Help for more information: Page 6

7 Using Windows Computer Management All Fibre Channel Ports that have the DataCore Fibre Channel driver installed on them will be listed under DataCore Fibre-Channel Adaptors in Device Manager. Right-click on a device, and select Properties from the context menu. Page 7

8 Staying on the General tab, the Location entry will list the PCI location. This device entry can now be cross-checked with the information in the SANsymphony Console to see if this is the corresponding Fibre Channel device. Page 8

9 Replacing the Fibre Channel Driver Replacing the DataCore driver Remove all mappings for the Fibre Channel port If the DataCore Fibre Channel port, whose driver is to be replaced, has either the Mirror or Front End port role enabled; then make sure there are no mappings (either to Hosts or as Mirror Paths) for any Virtual Disks using this port. See the Unserving Virtual Disks section from the SANsymphony Help: See the Removing paths section from the SANsymphony Help: How to replace the DataCore driver Locate the correct DataCore Fibre-Channel Adapter driver in Windows Device Manager see the previous section Identifying the Fibre Channel device. 10 Right-click on the device that needs the driver replaced and select Update Driver Software When prompted to Update Driver Software ; Choose the most appropriate way to install the third-party vendor s own driver on the Fibre Channel device. Please refer to the vendor for this information. Page 10

11 Once the new Fibre Channel driver has been installed the device will be removed from under DataCore Fibre-Channel Adaptors in Device Manager and should appear under Storage controllers. In the SANsymphony Console, select the Common Actions tab and click the Refresh All button. Be patient. It may take a few moments for the SANsymphony Console to update the Fibre Channel port s status. Page 11

12 The Fibre Channel port will now be shown as Not present, and all the values in the Info tab for the port will be zero and the Settings tab will be greyed out. Right-click on the Fibre Channel port and select Delete Port. The Fibre Channel port is now completely removed from under SANsymphony s control. Page 12

13 Replacing a third-party driver On replacing third-party drivers used for Storage Array connections If the Fibre Channel Port is currently being used to connect to a Storage Array and LUNs from that Storage Array are being used by the DataCore Server, then caution is needed. Replacing the driver with the DataCore driver will cause an interruption to the Storage Array while a new connection with the new driver is established. There is no need to stop the DataCore Server to do this, but consideration needs to be taken as this may cause IO to fail and the Storage Sources from that Storage Array to be temporarily marked as failed by the SANsymphony software for that DataCore Server. Once the DataCore Driver has been installed and the connection to the Storage Array has been re-established, then the Storage Source will become available again automatically. This may cause a temporary break of any mirrored Virtual Disks that were using that particular port connection to the Storage Array and in the case of any non-mirrored Virtual Disks, complete access will be temporarily lost. Any Hosts that are using non-mirrored Virtual Disks may need to be stopped until the driver has been updated and the Storage Array connection has been re-established. If you are using third-party failover software for the Storage Array, this will need to be removed before installing the DataCore Driver which may require an additional reboot of the DataCore Server itself. Please consult your Storage Vendor for advice on this. Page 13

14 How to replace the third-party driver Locate the correct Storage controller entry in Windows Device Manager. Right-click on the device that needs the driver replaced and select Update Driver Software Page 14

15 When prompted to Update Driver Software ; Select Browse my computer for driver software. In the next window that appears click the Browse button and locate SANsymphony s Install directory (typically this will be located in C:\Program Files\DataCore\SANsymphony\Install). Click Next. Page 15

16 Once the new Fibre Channel driver has been installed the device will be removed from under Storage controllers in Device Manager and should appear under DataCore Fibre-Channel Adaptors. In the SANsymphony Console, select the Common Actions tab and click the Refresh All button. Be patient. It may take a few moments for the SANsymphony Console to update the new Fibre Channel port s status. The Fibre Channel port will appear with the default settings - all port roles assigned and with a default Fibre Channel port name. The Fibre Channel port is now ready to use within SANsymphony.
