1 Syllabus Calvary Road Kansas City, MO Course: TH111-I Evangelism/Spiritual Life Credit: 3 Hours Semester: Fall 2016 Instructor: Larry Blanchard Cell Phone: (cell) larry.blanchard@calvary.edu NOTE: Students are responsible for everything in this syllabus whether it is specifically mentioned in class or not. Please read all of it and if you have a question, ask! I. DESCRIPTION An introduction to the biblical principles of evangelism and spiritual life from a New Testament framework. Emphasis in upon the practical methods of witnessing, discipleship, spiritual growth which includes our position in Christ by the Holy Spirit and grace. II. PURPOSE The purpose of this course is to assist each student in understanding and practicing the principles of the spiritual life which result in spiritual power and productivity for the glory of God. III. OBJECTIVES A. The student will understand the central elements of the spiritual life from a biblical perspective. B. The student will understand the holiness of God and what it means to live a holy life. C. The student will understand God s grace and what it means to live by grace. D. The student will understand their position in Christ and live for Christ based on that truth. E. The student will fully realize that the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential in living the Christian life. F. The student will gain insight into some of the disciplines that support and encourage the spiritual life. Our Mission: To Live According to a Biblical Worldview and Serve

2 Page 2 G. The student will understand the spiritual battle against the flesh, world and the Devil and actively put on their spiritual armor daily. IV. METHODS Classes will consist of primarily lecture, discussions, and possibly small groups. Students should be prepared by their reading and written assignments for interaction and discussion. V. RESOURCES A. Required Texts 1. Bible. Students are to use a reputable translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, or ESV). The NKJV is preferred by the instructor and will be used in class. The Bible is a required textbook in every course at Calvary University. To facilitate academic level study, students are required to use for assignments and research an English translation or version of the Bible based on formal equivalence (meaning that the translation is generally word-for-word from the original languages), including any of the following: New American Standard (NASB, English Standard Version (ESV), New King James (NKJV), or King James (KJV). Other translations and versions based on dynamic equivalence (paraphrases, and thought-for-thought translations like NLT and NIV) may be used as supplemental sources. Please ask the professor if you have questions about a particular translation or version. 2. Whitney, Donald S. Jesus Christ, Disciplemaker. Baker Books, ISBN: Amazon $ VI. REQUIREMENTS A. Attendance Students are expected to attend all scheduled meetings of courses for which they are registered. An Intensive lasts for 6 weeks. If a student begins a course and is unable to

3 Page 3 attend a class, he/she is responsible to make arrangements to have the class audiorecorded by contacting the professor by 4:00 p.m. on the day of class. This option is available only once per course. The student is to listen to the recording and write a short review (2-3 pages) to be turned in to his/her professor the following week. If a student fails to notify the professor by 4:00 p.m., it will result in his/her course grade being lowered by one letter grade. If a student misses more than one night of class, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from the course and receives an AF or AP grade. In no case is the cessation of class attendance taken as intent to withdraw from a course. B. Reading 1. Book: Jesus Christ, Disciplemaker and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. Students will read both textbooks according to the schedule. You may turn in a reading report one week late for half-credit. Reading reports will not be accepted more than two weeks late. Reading reports will be turned in during class. 2. Book: Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Study Guide. Students will complete the assignments in the study guide for weeks three through six according to the schedule and be prepared to discuss their answers from the study guide. C. Paper Attitudes of Christianity Each attitude assignment is to be a minimum of 1½ pages in length double spaced and 12 point font. You may use first person. Each topic must include the following: 1. Definition of the attitude (Biblical definition - not according to Webster). 2. Biblical examples of it (they can be negative and/or positive). 3. Give verses which teach it (they can be negative and/or positive). 4. Give examples of how you are weak in the area and how you are strong. 5. Give steps on how you can improve in the attitude in your life. The major part of the paper is application. You must demonstrate thought in applying principles to your life. You will be graded on the perception of deliberate thought. In other words, do not spend most of you time on the first part of the paper and then hurriedly end with a shallow application. You must state your plan to improve your application or your present practice. Papers are due at the beginning of that designated class period for discussion. Papers must have your name and topic on them and stapled if two or more pages. Attitude topics for papers: Thankfulness Dependability/faithfulness Humility

Paper Spiritual Disciplines Action Plan All class papers must follow the Turabian style according to A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 8th edition and the Calvary Style Guide, 2015 update. They shall all be typed and printed in best letter quality. Draft mode or hand written copy is not acceptable. The Action Plan paper is due two weeks after the last night of class. They will be due no later than December 22 th. Late papers will automatically receive a full letter grade reduction. You can your paper directly to the professor. You should not wait until the last moment to finish the paper. It is a good practice to have the paper finished a few days before the deadline for corrections/revisions. Students will complete a 13 page Action Plan based upon their understanding of the Spiritual Disciplines. This paper must be typed in 12 point Times New Roman. It will be double-spaced with citations. Use the correct margins. Provide the typical Turabian cover page (not to be included in the 13 pages). Include which of the Spiritual Disciplines you are familiar with and how you currently practice (if you do) or why you do not. Include which of the disciplines are new to you. Include disciplines you intend on adding to your own personal spiritual development. A plan on how you intend to develop those disciplines into your own spiritual development. Include also things like time - when will you practice a specific discipline (e.g. rising 15 minutes early three mornings a week to pray)? The College does not tolerate plagiarism of any kind. NOTE: Plagiarism is defined as copying any part of a book or paper without identifying the author. This also includes taking another person s ideas and presenting them as your own. D. Class Participation Students are expected to give their full attention to the class and participate in the discussions.

ACCOMODATIONS Students with disabilities have the responsibility of informing the DSS Coordinator (dss@calvary.edu) of any disabling condition that may require support. IX. LEARNING CENTER The Learning Center (learning@calvary.edu), located in the library building, is dedicated to providing free academic assistance for all CU students. Student tutors aid with all facets of the writing process, tutor in various subject areas, prepare students for exams, and facilitate tests. Please take advantage of this service. X. Thursday, November 10 Week Three, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, textbook read chapters 1-3 and complete chapters 1-3 in the Study Guide. 4. Thursday, November 17 Week Four, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, textbook read chapters 4-6 and complete chapters 4-6 in the Study Guide. 5. Thursday, November 24 NO CLASS. Thanksgiving 6. Thursday, December 1 Week Five, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, textbook read chapters 7-9 and complete chapters 7-9 in the Study Guide. 7. Thursday, December 8 Week Six, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, textbook read chapters and complete chapter 10 in the Study Guide. NOTE: You will turn in your study guide at the conclusion of tonight s class.
