Confirmation Check-In Teen Handout Flame 2 October 19, 2015 What is Confirmation? Confirmation is the sacrament that completes Baptism; in it the gift of the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon us. Anyone who freely decides to live a life as God s child and asks for God s Spirit under the signs of the imposition of hands and anointing with Chrism receives the strength to witness to God s love and might in word and deed. He is now a full-fledged, responsible member of the Catholic Church. When a coach sends a soccer player onto the playing field, he puts his hand on his shoulder and gives him final instructions. We can understand Confirmation in a similar way. A hand is placed upon us. We step out onto the field of life. Through the Holy Spirit we know what we have to do and we have been given the power to do it. He has motivated us. His mission resounds in our ears. We sense his help. We will not betray his trust or disappoint him; we will win the game for him. We just have to want to do it and listen to him. From YOUCAT Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Remember the acronym WURKCRW work crew Wisdom the gift of knowing the right choices to make to live a holy life Understanding the gift of comprehension. It helps you to be tolerant and sympathetic to others and to have the ability to grasp the teachings of the church and your parents Right Judgment the gift of knowing right from wrong. It helps us to live the life that Jesus wants us to live and keeps us from evil. Knowledge the gift of enlightenment that comes from studying God s word and teachings Courage the gift that stands up for our faith and gives us the strength to make tough decisions despite peer pressure, obstacles, and challenges Reverence the gift of confidence in God that shows respect when we serve God and others Wonder and Awe the gift of appreciation for God s creation and truths 1

You saw these images last year how have they grown in significance for you over time? Have you noticed any of these symbols in the Bible? In your daily life? Water signifies regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit in Baptism, which is necessary for salvation. In the Holy Spirit we are baptized into new life in Christ. Images of the Spirit Think of a dove, a gentle bird, flying to your hand and gently resting on it. In a similar way the Holy Spirit rested on Jesus when he emerged from the waters of his baptism by John. He also gently rests on us and remains with us. Water Anointing Fire Dove Anointing with oil has become so identified with the Holy Spirit that it is almost a synonym for the coming of the Spirit. Messiah is the Hebrew word for anointed one. Christ is from Greek and means the same thing. Jesus is the Messiah, the one uniquely anointed by the Spirit. Jesus pours out this same Spirit upon us, calling us to be more than we can ever hope to be through our own efforts alone. Fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist proclaimed that Jesus was the one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. We also remember the dramatic events of the Pentecost described in the Acts of the Apostles, in which tongues as of fire rested on the disciples. Which symbol of the Holy Spirit best relates to your life? Why? Have any of these symbols ever acted as a God Sighting to you? How so? How have the Gifts of the Holy Spirit been at work in our small group? In our families? At school? How will they help you in your future endeavors? 2

Sponsors As you prepare to receive the sacrament of confirmation an important consideration is choosing a confirmation name and sponsor. A sponsor should be a baptized, practicing catholic Sponsors should not be parents for the same reason parents are not godparents: a sponsor is a support and addition to your spiritual life Godparents, grandparents, confirmed siblings, family members or family friends are all possibilities for sponsors The sponsor should be a person who is prayerful, open, dependable, loving and who lives out their faith Talk to your parents about possible choices for a confirmation sponsor Sponsor forms are due November 2 Confirmation Names Think about whether you would like to choose a new name for confirmation or reaffirm your baptismal name Taking a new name has been a sign of conversion in the church. Saul became Paul when he converted to Christianity Think about family names and Saints names. Spend some time, do some research and know why you are making your choice (the Bishop may ask you!) If you ve already chosen a name, share the name and story with your class! Confirmed in the Spirit In the Rite of Confirmation, you come before the bishop with your sponsor, and your sponsor places his or her hand on your right shoulder. The bishop confirms you by anointing you with chrism. You or your sponsor tells the bishop your Confirmation name. The bishop traces the Sign of the Cross with chrism on your forehead and says: Name, be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. You respond, Amen. Then the bishop extends to you a sign of peace and says: Peace be with you. You respond, And with your spirit. With the bishop s anointing you receive an indelible, or permanent, character that signifies the way you are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift helps you become more like Christ and commissions you to live your prophetic mission to be a witness to him in all circumstance and at the very heart of the human community 3

Some Saints and Their Patronages Get into groups and take out your cell phones. GASP! Cell phones in class?! I know. Faith class is so cool. CHALLENGE Find the Saints! In this activity you will work with your group, scouring the internet and your brains, for saints that fit each of these criteria. Once time is up, you will come back to the group as a whole, and report your findings. The group with those most unique and correct answers wins a metaphorical gold star. And bragging rights till the end of class. It might behoove you to say a quick prayer to Saint Isidore of Seville, patron saint of the internet, to help you on this quest. 1. Find a saint with the most obscure patronage. (example: St. Perpetua, Patron saint of cows) Bonus point if you know why they have this patronage. 2. Find one saint per group member that somehow relates to that person. (patronage, life story, country of origin, etc) 3. Find the saint who celebrates their feast day on each group member s birthdays. 4. Find the saint with the most number of patronages. 5. Find the saint with the most gruesome martyrdom. (know their full back-story so you can argue your point) On March 15 th, you will have to turn in a worksheet describing in depth which name you are choosing to be confirmed under and why you are choosing it. Make sure to research your saint or holy person so you are familiar with their life, their struggles, their successes, their miracles. This is more than just a name; it s a new opportunity, to direct your life in the way of the Lord. Own your decision! 6. Find the requirements for becoming canonized. If everyone has a smart phone, as a group, at one time, pull up this website: This is a Saint s Name Generator. Everyone, at the same time, click Find a Saint for Me. This will bring you the next screen, where it will ask you to pause and say a prayer that whichever saint is chosen for you will inspire you to glorify God with your life. When the group is ready and everyone has prayed, press the Show Me My Saint button! 4

Take a minute to read about your saint and then share with the class! Who did you get? What do you think about him or her? Do they have anything to do with what you prayed about before clicking the button? Confirmation and Rehearsal The Rehearsal: April 22 from 7-8:30pm Confirmand and one adult (parent or sponsor) must attend The Confirmation Liturgy: April 26, 2015 at 1:30 p.m or April 27, 2015 Teens will arrive 30 min before the service Length of Liturgy : 2.5 to 3 hours Families can rsvp for up to 10 spots which includes the Confirmand (rsvp form will be available soon) Dress Code for Confirmation: no gym shoes or flip flops no jeans boys can wear dress pants/dockers with a dress shirt or a suit and tie. Girls can wear a modest dress or dress pants/skirt and blouse. o Dresses should be no more than a few inches above the knee. Shoes should be of modest height, and shoulders should be covered. What s Next?! Stay Involved! Baptize all the Nations! Peer Ministry Peer Ministry involves high school Juniors & Seniors who have received the sacrament of Confirmation and choose to serve, lead and support their peers as they grow in their faith. Peer Ministers assist in small groups with Ignite and FLAME, assist with Family Faith classes, and facilitate the Teen Mass. Faith on Fire A brand new program for high school juniors and seniors that meets once a month on Sunday nights from 6:30-8:00pm. This group will provide peer support, community, continuing faith formation, socialization and discussion on topics relevant to older teens. Kairos Kairos is a Christian experience of prayer and reflection for teens in their Junior or Senior year of high school run by a team of adult and teen leaders. The retreats are held in February and November of each year. Awaken Awaken is a powerful weekend retreat for high school teens. Awaken offers teens an opportunity to deeply examine issues of social justice while confronting homelessness in our own community. Mission Trip Catholic Heart Workcamp is a weeklong destination summer mission trip for teens. The mission is to revitalize communities and beautify homes for the elderly, disabled and those who cannot afford needed repairs. NCYC The National Catholic Youth Conference is a major event bringing together young Catholics from all across the US to hear current speakers and to discuss key issues of the day. This conference occurs every two years, the next one being in November, 2015 in Indianapolis. 5

As members of the Christian community, we are actively concerned about those who do not have enough clothing, food, or a good home. We meet their physical needs through the corporal works of mercy. These works include feeding the hungy, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, burying the dead and giving alms to the poor. We also want to help those who are feeling hurt, discouraged, sick, or confused. We meet emotional and spiritual needs of people through the spiritual works of mercy. These works are instructing, advising, consoling, comforting, forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. The Spirit helps us know what to do to come to the aid of our neighbor.
