WEEK FOUR April 17th 23rd Sermon Outline 1 Peter 1: Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy. I. INTRODUCTION A. We were chosen by God and set apart for a purpose, His purpose. B. That set apart life is called the holy life. C. Peter was reminding these Christians that their suffering and trials had a purpose. Their lives were bringing glory to God so they were to live holy for Him. God has called His people to live in the hope of a holy life. II. WHAT IS THIS HOLY LIFE? A. A holy life is something we receive by grace from God. (1 Peter 1:13) 1. Holiness comes from God. We can t achieve it on our own. 2. God is holy so there is no hope of living a holy life apart from God. 3. When Christ comes to live in us we have the fullness of God s holiness in us so therefore we have been made holy. (Hebrews 10:8-10) 4. Peter said we were to be keeping our minds alert and sober as we remember the holiness of the One who lives in us. a. alert prepared for action b. sober free of distractions 5. We are God s temple therefore we are holy and Christ is going to return to display His glory in His holy people. (1 Peter 1:13; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Thessalonians 1:5 10) 6. This is our hope of a holy life. B. A holy life is something we live by obedience to Jesus. (1 Peter 1:14 16) 1. People who see God s purity, morality, majesty and goodness are often drawn to His holiness.

1 Peter WEEK FOUR Sermon Notes 2. Over time the evil desires of our flesh can cause us to be uncomfortable living obediently in God s holiness. 3. Peter said be obedient, don t conform to evil desires and don t be living in ignorance. (1 Peter 1:14 16) 4. We are to be transformed. (Romans 12:1 2) 5. This transformation of being set apart in holiness is a process. (Hebrews 10:14; Romans 6:8 14) 6. There is a battle between the flesh and the Spirit and we must choose which one we will obey. (Galatians 5:16-18; Romans 6:15 18) 7. We can t produce a holy life but God will when we choose to obey Him. (2 Peter 1:2 4; Romans 6:19 23; 1 John 2:3 6; Hebrews 12:14) 8. What does a life of holy obedience look like? Paul tells us some of the evidences in Ephesians 4:17 5:20. III. CONCLUSION (1 Peter 1:13 16; Titus 2:11 14)

1 Peter WEEK FOUR WA R M U P God has always called his people to be holy. The way we live our life is to reflect his holiness. As children of God, we have an incredible motivation to be holy Jesus gave his life for our sins. Because of what Jesus has accomplished on our behalf, we have been born into a new way of life we are a new creation, where evil has no place. Of course, it is still possible for Christians to sin, but it is no longer fitting or appropriate for us to do so. If you re a Christian, think about your life before Jesus came to live in you. If you had one or two words to describe it, which words would you choose? What was one of the very first things you noticed in yourself that changed when Jesus transformed you? If you re not sure where you stand with God, what do you think life would be like if He lived in you? DIG I N Read 1 Peter 1: Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.

1 Peter WEEK FOUR REFLECTIONS 1 Peter 1:13 16 When you hear the word holy, what thoughts or images come to your mind? Describe all the ways you can of what it means that God is holy. How does it change your thinking about the importance of how you live when you consider this holy God is the one who has come to take up residence in you? Peter said obedience is critical for anyone who wants to be conformed to Christ, rather than the evil desires they lived during the time of their ignorance. What are you doing to put yourself in position to choose to obey Christ rather than evil desires when we are faced with these choices? 1 Corinthians 10:1 13 gives some vital insights. Preferences are not convictions. Most people would prefer to live holy rather than ungodly lives but fail to do so because their desires are based on preferences rather than convictions. What do you think is the difference between a biblical preference and a biblical conviction? How does a person form biblical convictions that result in living a holy lfe? TAKE IN Ask Yourself There are several commands that Peter challenges us with in these verses. Can you name them? What is your initial reaction when you read these commands (or any commands in the bible)? Look at the greater context of this week s passage. How does Peter reveal to us the way in which these commands can be obeyed? How does God work this out in your life?

1 Peter WEEK FOUR PRAY UP Ask God To reveal to you where you may be attempting to be obedient in your own strength. To help you understand biblical obedience. To show you His holiness. To strengthen you to live a holy life. Prayer Requests
