This class will to introduce you to concepts and theories within the sociological study of social problems in contemporary society. The course consists of assigned readings, lectures, weekly quizzes, a short research paper as well as a midterm and final exam. Sociology is the study of our social world, its norms, institutions, and people. To think like a sociologist is to critically examine the structural forces that make up societies. Most broadly, it is my goal that upon completing the course, you will walk away with a comprehension of how conditions in our social world come to be defined as social problems in need of solutions. Course Readings: Required Text: Best, Joel Social Problems. 2nd ed. New York: W.W. Norton, Inc. (ISBN-10: , ISBN-13: ). Referred to hereafter as JB. Sternheimer, Karen Connecting Social Problems and Popular Culture: Why Media Is Not the Answer (E-Resource). Referred to hereafter as KS. Additional Readings: Posted to Blackboard Course Learning Objectives: Upon completing this class students should be able to: 1 - differentiate between objective and social constructionist approaches to social problems. 2 - describe the major sociological theories used to study social problems. 3 - identify the types of groups that make social problems claims. 4 - analyze media presentations of social problems. 5 - compare and contrast specific social problems in a cross-cultural context. 6 - apply the social problems process and sociological theory to analyze a contemporary social problem. Achieving Learning Objectives: This class is designed to progress through our learning objectives throughout the course, culminating in an original research paper covering a social problem of your choice (subject to instructor approval). Learning objectives 1-5 will be met via our course readings, in-class lectures, take-home assignments, various media, and collaborative group discussion. Taken together, these should prepare you fully for writing your original research paper.
2 Course Requirements and Expectations: Readings - Students are expected to complete assigned readings before the class period. This course requires a substantial amount of in-class discussion and exercises, thus not reading substantially weakens our efforts at collaboration and discussion in class. Readings will be posted from the text book on the syllabus, along with additional readings that can be accessed through Blackboard. Attendance: 10% - University policy requires that all students attend the first day of class. Attendance will be taken daily at the beginning of every class, so I advise you to arrive on time. Students are allowed three unexcused absences before it negatively affects their grade. For more information on attendance, refer to the attendance section under policies". Quizzes: 10% - There will be four quizzes over the term (5% of total grade per quiz). Each quiz will consist of 10 multiple choice and true/false questions as well as two short answer questions worth a total of 5% extra credit. Finally quizzes will be given at the beginning of class on selected Mondays (HINT: make sure to be on time!) Midterm Exam: 15% - During the third week of the course, there will be a midterm exam consisting of 30 multiple choice questions, two short answer and 1 essay question. Short Assignments: 20% - Throughout the course, there will be four short reflection assignments. The prompts and submission link for each will be provided in the Assignments folder on Bb. In the course schedule, these are listed as A1, A2, A3, and A4. Final Exam: 20% - There will be a final exam for the course on the final day, accessible during finals week through Blackboard. The exam will consist of 40 multiple choice and true/false questions, 2 short answer questions, and 1 essay question. The final exam is comprehensive. Extra credit can be earned by answering the two additional short answer questions. Social Problem Research Paper: 25% - In the second half of the term, you will be writing a short research paper on a social problem. I want to students to integrate the social problems process as well as sociological theory to analyze a contemporary social problem. The format is 4-6 pages double-spaced, 12-point Times or Times New Roman font, and 1 inch margins. In the second week of class, I will post the assignment guidelines to Blackboard. In brief, the final paper should consist of the following: history of the social problem, groups that act as claims-makers, policies and social work dealing with the problem
3 Grading Summary Attendance 10% Quizzes 10% Mid-term Exam 15% Short Assignments 20% Final Exam 20% Research Paper 25% Total: 100% Grading Scale A = %, A- = 90-93% B+ = 87-89%, B = 83-86%, B- = 80-82% C+ = 77-79%, C = 73-76%, C- = 70-72% D+ = 67-69%, D = 63-66%, D- = 60-62% F < 60% Policies Syllabus Change Policy - Except for changes that substantially affect implementation of the evaluation (grading) statement, this syllabus is a guide for the course and is subject to change with advance notice. In the event the syllabus changes during the term, I will notify students via and provide the updated version via Blackboard and GoogleDocs. University and Course Attendance Policy - Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness. If you need to miss class for a legitimate reason, I recommend contacting me via prior to class so I am aware in advance and can make any necessary arrangements. Academic Honor Policy - Collaboration is required of in-class assignments, however all other assignments must be the student s own work. Plagiarism in any form will result in a zero for the assignment and the potential for referral to the academic judiciary. Be sure to cite or reference the sources you are using when completing assignments. Final papers and two reflection assignments will be uploaded to Blackboard with a tool called Turnitin. This tool literally scans the entire digital world and compares what you ve written. It is very easy to catch plagiarism this way, so the simplest solution is to not plagiarize. The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University s expectations for the integrity of students academic work, the procedures for resolving
4 alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to... be honest and truthful and... [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University. (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at Late policy - Assignments turned in after the original due date will be deducted 5% for each day. Final Papers will be deducted 10% for each day and will not be accepted more than 5 days after the original due date. As a general guideline, if you disagree with someone else s opinion, first restate it and then explain why you find that idea, not individual, problematic. I will not tolerate speech that others find offensive or hateful. Repeated classroom disruption constitutes a violation of the Student Conduct Code. Students behaving in such a manner will be asked to leave. Laptops - Laptops will be permitted for note taking and course-related material. However, if it is obvious that you are using your computer for extra-curricular activities, you will be asked to refrain from using it altogether. Extra Credit - Extra credit opportunities will be available on quizzes and exams.
