Joining a valuesbased fraternity or sorority is a great way to meet people, develop a lifelong network, enhance your leadership skills, engage in meaningful community service and philanthropy and have lots of fun. At their best, fraternities and sororities create environments for intellectual discourse, expose you to diversity in all senses of that word and reinforce the values that you already hold in high esteem. It is one of those experiences that may mean more to you after you graduate than while you are experiencing it. For some, it is life-changing. It is an exciting time to be part of the fraternity and sorority community at UWF. The number of chapters and membership within the community have increased. Our members are involved in all aspects of campus life, not just fraternity and sororities, and hold prestigious student leadership positions. There is a true partnership between the administration and the students to make the fraternity and sorority community at UWF the best it can be. I hope you will consider joining our fraternity and sorority community and discovering for yourself the benefits you can gain from membership in one of our fraternities or sororities. Kevin W. Bailey, Ph.D. Vice President for Student Affairs Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (KAΨ) 3

3 Dear potential new members, Let me first congratulate you upon your interest in the University of West Florida s Panhellenic Community. You are about to embark on a journey recognized as the best four years of your life - it is here where you will learn to encompass all that it means to be a Panhellenic woman. Being in a sorority is an opportunity not only to represent letters, but also to proudly represent your organization s rich history and values upheld for more than 100 years. From this moment on, you have the choice to be a part of something bigger than yourself, to announce confidently a wonderful addition to not only your college experience, but your life. It is here you will find permanent friendships and support systems, life and professional skills, a deeper appreciation of the world and others around you, a better understanding of yourself and overall greater opportunities for success. Membership in a sorority can enhance every aspect of your life if you take the right opportunities. If you put yourself out there, you will receive more than you ever expected out of joining Panhellenic. Each sorority is unique and has something valuable to offer, so be mindful of the women you not only see yourself being friends with, but molding into. My best advice to you is to keep an open mind as you attend the week of events, know what you are looking for out of an organization, be yourself and have fun! Joining Panhellenic, you will find an inner beauty in being a part of something spectacular. As the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment, I am proud to represent College Panhellenic Council and I encourage you to take the first step in adding a new sisterhood to your life. May recruitment be your stepping stone into starting your journey. What is Panhellenic? The College Panhellenic Council (CPC) is the governing body of all four National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities on the University of West Florida campus and unites every Panhellenic sorority woman regardless of individual affiliation. Every woman who joins an NPC sorority becomes a member of Panhellenic. The Council Executive Board is voted on by all four chapters, and each chapter is represented by one delegate. Together, the council members strive to unite all sorority women and strengthen their values. The Panhellenic Council is responsible for promoting scholarship, philanthropy, personal growth, health, safety and involvement in sorority life and the Greek community as a whole. Panhellenic Creed We, as undergraduate members of women s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live. Taylor Suwarow Vice President of Recruitment 4 5

4 Benefits of Membership Academics: Scholastics are important to each chapter. Chapters want their members to strive for success. Each sorority has high academic standards for membership, and there are various initiatives and programs that support University expectations for academic excellence at the council and chapter levels. Scholarship opportunities are available Beta Chis What is a Beta Chi? A recruitment counselor, also known as a Beta Chi, is a woman who has temporarily disassociated from her chapter during the recruitment process to help promote sorority life. Beta Chis have been trained to provide support and guidance for potential new members (PNMs). As a PNM, you should get to know your recruitment counselors, so you feel comfortable going to them with any questions about recruitment or sorority life. Recruitment counselors will keep anything you tell them in confidence, so you may be open with them about any problems or concerns you may have during the recruitment process. 6 Leadership: There are many opportunities within each chapter for leadership positions. Each sorority helps foster the skills necessary for its members to become strong leaders by encouraging involvement in other campus organizations. Currently, members are well-represented in Student Government Association, Argo Camp, Orientation and Student Ambassadors. Sisterhood: One of the most exciting parts of joining a sorority involves making new friends and forming bonds that will last a lifetime. Sisterhood is more than wearing Greek letters and attending chapter events. It s so many things at once; it s the experience of a lifetime, unlike any other. Joining a sorority is the beginning of a new experience, sharing something sacred and treasured with your sisters and learning to give back to your campus and community selflessly. Philanthropy: Panhellenic women of UWF maintain strong traditions of service to the campus and community. Chapters not only host annual events to raise money for their philanthropies, but also come together to raise donations for great causes. Panhellenic supports the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation, a philanthropic association that supports entities around the world that remove educational barriers for girls and women, uplifting them from poverty and oppression. Social Activity: There is never a dull moment in the life of a sorority woman at UWF. Each chapter plans social events, such as formals, sisterhood retreats and Family Weekends. They also compete in intramural sports and campus life activities, such as Rock Out the Red Zone, Homecoming, and Take Back the Night, and attend other UWF campus events together. 7

9 Frequently Asked Questions DO I NEED TO REGISTER TO BE A PART OF RECRUITMENT? Yes, you will need to register at uwf.edu/fsl/cpc. There is a $50 nonrefundable registration fee, payable online, due no later than Friday, September 2. IF I AM AN UPPERCLASSMAN, AM I AT A DISADVANTAGE? Many women choose to go through recruitment as a sophomore, junior or senior for various reasons. Sorority life has wonderful opportunities to offer to all college women. UWF Panhellenic Council also has an upperclassman quota, which allows sororities to offer membership to juniors and seniors without taking away opportunities for freshmen and sophomores. AM I GUARANTEED TO RECEIVE AN INVITATION FOR MEMBERSHIP (BID) FROM A CHAPTER? There is no guarantee you will receive a bid. However, if you are invited back each day through Preference Round, attend all the events to which you are invited and list all sororities you attended on your preference list, you 16 have the opportunity to receive a bid to one of the sororities you visited in the Preference Round. CAN I LIVE IN THE SORORITY RESIDENCE HALL AS A FRESHMAN? This varies from chapter to chapter. If this is something you are interested in, ask chapters during recruitment week whether they have rooms available and whether a freshman may move into the residence hall. WILL MY GRADES SUFFER IF I AM IN A SORORITY? Each sorority has its own scholarship program that will help you succeed academically as well as learn to effectively manage your time outside of class. There is no minimum for going through recruitment; however, each chapter has its own GPA requirements. The average sorority minimum GPA to join is a 2.5. WILL I BE ABLE TO WORK IF I AM IN A SORORITY? Many chapter members at UWF have jobs in addition to being in a fraternity or sorority. WHAT IF I AM SHY? The most important thing to remember in recruitment is to be you! Every sorority is looking for a variety of members. Just keep in mind that it is up to you to present yourself to each sorority. Smile and feel free to talk and ask questions. Just relax and enjoy meeting new friends! IF I GO THROUGH RECRUITMENT, DO I HAVE TO JOIN A SORORITY? You are under no obligation to join a sorority by participating in recruitment, and not all women are extended a bid or choose to join. Regardless, recruitment is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. are paid each fall and spring semester. I M A LEGACY TO A SORORITY. IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD KNOW? Each PNM is considered on an individual basis; a legacy is no more obligated to join a particular sorority than the sorority is obligated to give her a bid. The PNM and the sorority should be looking for compatibility, not necessarily a family connection to the group. WHAT ARE DUES? Dues are the membership, philanthropic and other fees paid to the local chapter of a sorority or fraternity in order to be a member in good standing and for the local chapter to stay in good standing with its national organization. Each chapter has its own dues amount ranging from $300-$600 and 17
