Welcome to Fall Panhellenic Recruitment 2012! On behalf of all of the Panhellenic women at The University of Tampa, I want to thank you for your interest in sorority recruitment. Over the course of the next three days you will have the pleasure of being invited into parties hosted by all five of our chapters here at UT. During the parties you will have the opportunity to not only meet the sisters but also learn about their values, traditions, sisterhood and rituals. Becoming a part of Greek life is an incredible opportunity as a college student, but more so for the rest of your life. If you choose to go through the recruitment process and find your sisters here at UT, you will form lifelong friendships and make connections you ll have forever. It s not just about the friends you want today, but also the women whom you want to be your sisters for life. It s about common values, joining an organization that s bigger than just you, having fun and making an impact. We thank you for your interest and participation, and look forward to calling all of you our Panhellenic sisters. Happy Recruitment! Dana Saydak, President College Panhellenic Association The University of Tampa

PANHELLENIC COUNCIL The Panhellenic Creed We, as the undergraduate members of women s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live. Spartan Code As a member of The University of Tampa Spartan community, I agree and pledge that I will... Promote and practice academic and personal honesty. Commit to actions that benefit the community, as well as engage in activities that better others. Discourage intolerance and acknowledge that diversity in our community shapes our learning and development. Conduct myself in a manner that makes me worthy of the trust of others. Recognize the ideas and contributions of all persons allowing for an environment of sharing and learning. Accept full responsibility and be held accountable for all of my decisions and actions.

RECRUITMENT COUNSELORS What is a Pi Chi? Panhellenic trains a special group of 30 women, known as Pi Chis, for the purpose of providing a more enjoyable and less stressful atmosphere during recruitment. All Pi Chis remain disaffiliated during recruitment. Disaffiliation enables Pi Chis to answer questions and guide potential new members without any bias or preference to a particular chapter. Your Pi Chi will provide information about the week, accompany you to the recruitment parties and provide a listening ear as you make decisions concerning sorority membership. Approximately 10 to 20 women will join you as members of a recruitment group. Panhellenic chooses Pi Chis based on enthusiasm for UT and sorority life, objectivity and dependability. Take advantage of your Pi Chi because she can offer valuable information regarding sorority life, academic classes and other opportunities waiting for you at The University of Tampa. Her job during recruitment is to help you and to make the week easier for you in whatever way she can. Potential New Member Bill of Rights The right to... Be treated as an individual. Be fully informed about the recruitment process. Ask questions and receive true and objective answers from recruitment counselors and members. Be treated with respect. Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized. Ask how and why and receive straight answers. Have and express opinions to recruitment counselors. Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with recruitment counselors. Make informed choices without undue pressure from others. Be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the memberships acceptance signing. Make one s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility for the results of that decision. Have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment and new member experience.

BENEFITS OF SORORITY MEMBERSHIP FRIENDSHIP To create an eternal bond of loyalty camaraderie and respect based on the pride and unity that encompasses our community. Once initated... you re a lifetime member. To ecourage and provide the resoures for our members to succeed academically through continous learning, moral development and scholastic recognition. Did you know? Fraternity and sorority members tend to have a higher GPA than the average undergraduate student. SERVICE LEADERSHIP To develop the skills and talents for our members to impact our campus, community, state, country and world as undergrauate members and beyond. All chapters are self-governing which provides opportunities for members to take on leadership positions. To formulate meaningful friendships through a wide range of activities that bring together our members and develop personal and professional skills. Sororities and fraternities build social skills and provide opportunities for networking through alumnae events. SCHOLARISHIP SOCIAL ADVANCEMENT To enrich the lives of our members through meaningful involvement in service and philanthropic events. Every organization has a service and/or a philanthropic agency they support. Additionally, fraternity and sorority life comes together to do service events several times a year. To create an opportunity for people of different backgrounds, cultures and interests to come together and celebrate the common experiences that we have as sorority members while appreciating our individual differences. DIVERSITY

FALL RECRUITMENT 2012 Open House Night: During this first round of recruitment, you will get to spend 30 minutes with each of our five Panhellenic sororities. This is a chance for you to start learning about each chapter and meet some of its members. Take the time to ask some general questions you have about sorority life, and be prepared to talk with members about yourself! Philanthropy Night: On this night, you will return to at most three sororities for 45 minutes each. By this night, you should become more familiar with chapters you visit. This round focuses on each sorority s philanthropy and why it is important to its members. Chapters might include you in activities such as presentations and craft or gift making. Take the time on this night to ask tougher questions about the values of the organization and how each sister views her personal values fitting with those of the organization. This is a great way for you to assess if your values fit with the chapters you visit. Preference Day: During this final round of recruitment, you will visit at most two chapters for an hour each. An invitation to a preference event indicates a sorority s strong interest in you as a future member. On this day, you will have the chance to spend more time with a member to learn about her personal experience in her sorority. This is a chance for you to get a glimpse into the unique side of each chapter. Take the opportunity to talk to and listen to the sisters as they reveal the strongest characteristics of their chapter. Assessing where you best fit and would be the happiest, is essential during this round.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the role of the parent? Take time to find out all you can about the UT sorority community and the particular chapters that your daughter is interested in joining. Once she joins, follow up with your daughter to find out how she is enjoying her experience. Brent Grunig, coordinator of fraternity and sorority life, is a member of the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement at the University and the professional staff member responsible for the supervision of the fraternity and sorority community. He is available to answer questions and/or give information. Please feel free to contact him at bgrunig@ut.edu What are the financial obligations? Financial requirements are an important consideration for students interested in participating in the sorority community. Each sorority is self-supporting from dues paid by its members. Dues and fees vary for each chapter and from year to year. The expenses involved in being a member include: semester dues, social dues, insurance, international dues and other fees. During the first year of membership, the expense is usually greater due to the new member fees, initiation and pin/badge fees that are incurred during the first period. Almost any organization a student joins will have dues that must be paid. Each sorority also works with members to make payment plans. Are alcohol and other substance abuse prevalent? Accounts of substance abuse are not the norm here at UT and take away from the many positive aspects of sorority life. Inter/national organizations and the University both have alcohol policies and risk management guidelines that sorority members must abide by for social occasions when alcohol is present. The University, the inter/national organizations and the students themselves monitor compliance with these policies. Chapters also have both faculty/staff advisors and alumnae advisors that help ensure the groups are making good decisions and providing a safe environment for their members. Is hazing still tolerated? First and foremost, hazing is illegal it is a felony in Florida. Hazing includes any activity that subjects members to any physical brutality, mental stress, intimidation, harassment or ridicule. Like all respectable schools and inter/national fraternities and sororities, UT does not tolerate hazing. Fraternities and sororities are well aware of the penalties associated with hazing, as well as the harm hazing can have on their members. Hazing is contradictory to the purposes of both the fraternity and sorority communities and the University, and is not how or why fraternities and sororities were founded. All new members of fraternities and sororities experience a period of orientation to the chapter. During this time, it is not unusual to participate in weekly meetings to learn about the University and the organization, discuss leadership and college success skills, and engage in teambuilding activities. This period is intended solely for positive membership. Will being a sorority member affect my grades? As stated earlier in the brochure, the all-sorority averages consistently exceed the all-female average. Sororities offer programs and incentives to help members achieve scholastic success. What is a legacy? Do I need to be one to join a sorority? A legacy is a close relative of a member of a particular chapter (usually mothers, grandmothers and sisters), but each chapter has a different policy on recruiting legacies. Legacies are not guaranteed a bid and all potential members are expected to consider all chapters equally. It is important that each potential member find a chapter with which she shares values and feels comfortable.

WHAT TO WEAR... Open House: Wear the shirts given and your choice of bottoms. Show your style! Philanthropy: Busines Casual... Wear something comfortable and cute. If you choose to wear heels, bring flats just in case! Preference: Business Formal... Wear something nice you would wear to an interview or wedding. We recommend heels, but bring flats in case your feet start to hurt. Bid Night: Wear a tank. You ll get a shirt from your new sisters and throw that on over the tank!

ALPHA CHI OMEGA ACW Nicknames: Alpha Chi, A Chi O Colors: Scarlet Red and Olive Green Mascot: Lyre GPA to receive a bid: 3.0 cumulative GPA to remain an active member: 2.5 cumulative Alpha Chi Omega is more than just a sorority; it is a sisterhood. A place where every woman can be herself and be loved for being an individual. Why? Because we are a sorority filled with real, strong women. We work together, to build a sense of wisdom, devotion and achievement. We aim to help our sisters grow as individuals through character development, financial responsibility academic interest, leadership ability, and personal development. To achieve these goals we participate in a wide variety of activities to bond us as sisters, such as retreats, community service, alumnae programs, study hours and social events with other Greek letter and non-greek letter organizations. We strive to give back to our community mainly through our philanthropy, domestic violence awareness and prevention. In doing so, we spend quite a bit of time at our very own domestic violence refuge here in Tampa, The Spring. Being an Alpha Chi gives you experiences that will last a lifetime.

DELTA GAMMA DG Nickname: Dee Gee Colors: Bronze, Pink and Blue Mascot: Golden Anchor and Hannah Doll GPA to receive a bid: 3.0 high school and 2.7 college GPA to remain an active member: 2.5 cumulative Delta Gamma is comprised of over 110 women making us the largest sorority on campus. Whether we are out on the town, at an event, supporting our philanthropy (Service for Sight) or other Greek organizations, we are always having fun together. We give back to the Tampa community by supporting events as well as conducting them. Our biggest fundraiser is Anchor Splash, put on at the UT pool every year, which the whole school is invited to. Along with having fun and giving back, we take school very seriously too, which is why we had the highest GPA out of all the Panhellenic sororities last semester. You can always find a DG to go out, go to the library or participate in an event.

DELTA ZETA DZ Nickname: Dee Zee Colors: Rose and Green Mascot: Turtle GPA to receive a bid: 2.8 cumulative GPA to remain an active member: 2.5 cumulative Delta Zeta was founded on Oct. 24, 1902, at Miami University in Oxford, OH. The mission of the Delta Zeta Sorority is to unite its members in the bonds of sincere and lasting friendship, to stimulate one another in the pursuit of knowledge, to promote the moral and social culture of its members, and to develop plans for guidance and unity in action. At The University of Tampa, Delta Zeta is committed to remaining actively engaged on campus while providing a genuine sisterhood for our women. Our sisters are notably unique; you can see them proudly sporting pink and green while participating in numerous campus clubs and organizations. The national philanthropy of Delta Zeta is the speech and hearing impaired, specifically supporting the Starkey Hearing Foundation, Gallaudet University, the Painted Turtle Camp and the House Research Institute. Each year we host our theme week, the Rosebowl, as well as our formal fundraiser, the Green Gala, to raise awareness and support for our beloved philanthropies. Delta Zetas are best known for being passionate individuals: passionate about their friends and family, about their school and community, as well as passionate about the organization and sisterhood of which they are a part of!

KAPPA ALPHA THETA KAQ Nickname: Theta Colors: Black and Yellow Mascot: Kite GPA to receive a bid: 2.8 high school, 3.0 college GPA to remain an active member: 3.0 cumulative Kappa Alpha Theta is made up of a fun-loving, passionate and hard-working group of diverse women who are all involved in aspects of campus life. We all have varying interests, but bond together because of our core values: personal excellence, friendship/sisterhood, scholarship, service and leadership. Thetas participate in on-campus activities, including theme weeks, Greek week and homecoming. We also hold our own fundraising events to raise money to support our philanthropies Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Theta Foundation. Our biggest event is a kickball tournment called Kicks for CASA. Kappa Alpha Theta was the recipient of the Best New Outstanding Organization award on campus last spring. We offer our members a place to grow, learn and excel, as well as a home away from home to form friendships that last a lifetime.

SIGMA DELTA TAU SDT Nicknames: SDT, Sig Delt Colors: Old Blue and Cafe Au Lait Mascot: Torch and Teddy Bear GPA to receive a bid: 2.5 cumulative GPA to remain an active member: 2.5 cumulative The sisters of Sigma Delta Tau are an authentic group of individuals that can shine alone but come together to form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood. We not only share a special love for SDT, but we also remain passionate toward our school. We host annual events such as Singled Out, to help raise money and support our philanthropy Prevent Child Abuse America. Sigma Delta Tau encourages members to reach their fullest potential by providing intellectual, philanthropic, leadership and social opportunities within a framework of mutual respect and high ethical standards. The sisters of Sigma Delta Tau come together to experience an everlasting friendship and memories that will never be forgotten.
