5 February 2011 The Changing Nature of Turkey s Political Opposition: The Ergenekon Trials, February 11 th, 2011, Florida State University, Symposium on Turkey CONTENT BASED COURSES TAUGHT INAF 452 Turkish Foreign Policy (upper division and graduate) The course is designed to focus on providing students a clear understanding of the determinants that go into the making of Turkish foreign policy in republican times (1923-present). A general survey of Turkish foreign policy will be completed in the first half of the semester. This will give students both a chronological and historical understanding of the development of international politics surrounding Turkey. This is followed by a regional analysis of foreign policy goals and developments in the contemporary period, in aid of answering the questions posed above. EUS2003 Europe from a Social Science Perspective (lower division) An undergraduate course designed for students who have little or no knowledge about the concept of Europe and the EU. The course dwells upon key themes in the evolution of European civilisation, examining periods such as antiquity, feudalism, the enlightenment and the industrial revolution and their role as processes in the founding of modern Europe. Having examined these formative periods, the course proceeds to focus on the founding of the EU and the challenges it faces in contemporary times in building a more integrated union. A direct contrast is made between the challenges that Europe has faced historically and at present, intended to add depth of student understanding. EUS4930 Government and Politics of Turkey (upper division and graduate) An undergraduate course designed to introduce students to core debates within Turkey in the modern republican era (1923-present). The course does not require pre-existing knowledge regarding Turkey and is hence structured in two parts: the first deals with a chronological overview of political developments during republican and multiparty times. Following this, a thematic approach is adopted, remaining faithful to comparative methodology, which analyses key debates in contemporary Turkey. Among these are the role and nature of Kemalist ideology, democratisation, political Islam, socialism and nationalism. EUS 4931/POS 4931: History of Europe and Turkey, and the Future of Turkey in the EU (upper division) Turkey's membership application to the EU has been a long and drawn out affair, beginning in the 1960s. Throughout the Cold War, Turkey was felt to be a "tangible" asset within the western alliance to help combat the spread of Communism. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union however, Turkey's membership within the emerging European Union was questioned and initially rejected. Put simply, several member states and a sizeable portion of public opinion in the West did not feel that Turkey belonged in the "new Europe" for a variety of reasons. Despite this initial setback, Turkey continued to press for membership and began full accession 5
6 negotiations with the union in 2005, which has helped to spark a larger debate in Europe over what constitutes European or "European-ness". In concise terms, Turkey has been seen by many as Europe's "other." It is often cited as an example of the opposite of what the "West" stands for. It is a country with a 99.6 percent Muslim population, constructed from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire, largely perceived as the eastern threat to western Christendom. In the present climate however, the debate over Turkey's candidacy to formally join the "West" represents in many ways the types of conceptual problems that the EU is grappling with more generally. Primary among these are: EUS3930: The Greek and Turkish "Other" A historical legacy of animosity between Greeks and Turks can be said to exist for a variety of reasons both historically and culturally rooted. Despite their geographical proximity and cultural congruence, it is surprising to note how little interaction exists between the two cultures. This course has a bold aim of trying to firstly determine what the areas of friction between both people's are, why these problems are so entrenched and the impact these animosities have had on both cultures. The grand aim of this course will be to highlight the surprising degree of similarity of both cultures' portrayal of the "other" and to help dispel existing myths. POLS303 Elections and Political Participation This is an undergraduate upper division course designed to introduce students of political science to debates surrounding the extent of democratic participation. Electoral systems within EU countries are portrayed in a comparative manner to engage students to understand differences of representation versus systemic stability in democracies. In addition, the course examines the role of various institutions such as political parties and nongovernmental organizations in facilitating individual and group interest projection/realization. LANGUAGE COURSES TAUGHT TUR 2220 Intermediate Turkish I and TUR 2221 Intermediate Turkish II (second semester) Second year Turkish language courses offered to both graduate and undergraduate students. EUS 3937: Foreign Language Across the Curriculum This course parallels the current course offering in the Turkish Studies Program curriculum at the Center for European Studies at UF: Government and Politics of Turkey (EUS4930/POS4931). It intends to provide upper-division undergraduate students, who are fluent in Turkish language an introduction to both the political history of republican Turkey (1923-present), as well as provide a thematic and comparative analysis of current issues in Turkish politics. The FLAC in Turkish has a language focus on building competency related to using indirect and reported speech in Turkish. 6
