1 Kuskokwim Native Association Internship Program by Mike Thalhauser, Fisheries Director, Kuskokwim Native Association P r o j e c t U p d a t e O c t o b e r With the silver salmon run complete and the fireweed blossoms gone, the Kuskokwim Native Association (KNA) Fisheries Department has wrapped up another college and high school internship season. Each summer KNA hosts between fifteen to twenty high school students from the Kuskokwim region for internships lasting one or two weeks at either the George or Tatlawiksuk River fish weir. These weirs are salmon management tools KNA operates cooperatively with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to monitor salmon spawning. The goals of the internship program are to foster awareness about the KNA fisheries program, to introduce youth to local career opportunities in fisheries, and to develop a pool of future leaders who are well informed about Kuskokwim fisheries issues. High School Interns Carrie Hackett, a graduate student at Alaska Pacific University (APU), coordinates the high school intern program. She implements a curriculum based on Kuskokwim area fisheries and ecological concepts related to salmon. KNA works closely with the local Kuspuk School District to align its curriculums with local and state standards so that students gain field knowledge and work experience while receiving school credit for their work. She also spends one to three weeks during the winter at each village school in the Kuspuk School District to teach a more in-depth curriculum with the goal of using local fisheries projects to teach math, biology, and social sciences. College Interns For students interested in pursuing a career in fisheries, KNA also hires three to five college interns each year. These interns rotate among eight KNA fisheries monitoring projects and gaining a variety of professional experiences including the opportunity to work with biologists from state, federal, Native, and other local organizations. This year, in addition to working on KNA cooperative Continued on page 3 From left to right: KNA college intern Alex Nicori III of Kwehtluk radio-tagging fish at the Kalskag fish wheels. 2 Face to Face with Doug Nicholson Aniak Fair Proves Unbeatable The staff and employees of Donlin Creek always look forward to participating in the Interior Rivers Fair in Aniak, or as we have always called it The Aniak Fair. It s always great to be on the river but especially in that first week in August. It s good to see everyone who has worked at Donlin over the years and catch up on family news and future plans. This year was no exception and we thank everyone who stopped by for burgers and hot dogs and chat. I would like to say we had as much luck on the softball diamond but, alas, the Donlin softball team lost their longstanding title as the winningest team at the Aniak Fair to the Alaska Commercial Co. (A.C.) team and we tip our caps to them. (Just wait till next year.) According to Danny Twitchell, a veteran of many of the Donlin games at the Fair, That A.C. team was hot we didn t stand a chance! Mary Nelson didn t fare any better at the arm wrestling table. Mary says Erica Kameroff is one strong lady. She had my arm down within two or three seconds okay, maybe it was one second. I think the important thing is that a good time was had by all. I guess all we can do is lick our wounds and look forward to another chance next year. Meanwhile we continue to host groups at Donlin to visit and learn about the project. Camp activities increased in August and will continue through at least September. We are continuing a short drill program to collect additional geotechnical information to assist in the project design. All of the ongoing environmental baseline work continues as well. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at The Alaska Commercial (AC) Co. 3 Employee Spotlight: Checking Back In Tisha Woolley, Donlin Creek LLC Geologist In January of 2006 Tisha Woolley (previously Tisha Kuhns) was the focus of our employee spotlight as a geologist of Yup ik Eskimo descent recently employed by the Donlin Creek project. She is now an Environmental Geologist overseeing the project s water quality data management. Tisha is also a young community leader, and was selected as one of only 50 delegates to the Conference of Young Alaskans held in Fairbanks in Since 2006, Tisha has moved to the Donlin Creek LLC Anchorage office after having her son, Samuel. This transition has allowed her to advance her professional skills in environmental and geological database management. She has also taken on the responsibility of overseeing the quality control/ quality assurance portion of environmental data collection. Tisha says she is excited to be a member of the Donlin Creek team. I love this project for what it is and what I hope it becomes, she said. I hope to still be involved in the Donlin project as long as I can. Tisha s degree in geology from Southern Oregon University, and her experience working at Barrick s Cortez Mine in Nevada in 2007 have prepared her well to become more involved in Donlin s Environmental Department. Her goals include gaining more technical experience in the water quality program, and taking on more responsibility in the environmental management of the project. Tisha s commitment to the project is clearly very strong. This project for me is quite cherished on many levels, she said. My family is from the Kuskokwim region, she added. I take my involvement seriously and know that if I can work hard by helping and ensuring that we are all on the same page making sure that we re all taking care of ourselves, each other and the environment this project can be a success. Her supervisor Nick Enos says, Tisha has become an invaluable member of our team. She brings a high level of focus and detail to the management of our environmental data. I have complete confidence in Tisha s abilities and know that she will continue to grow professionally. Born and raised in Bethel, Tisha Woolley is now an Environmental Geologist in the Donlin Creek LLC Anchorage office. 4 Georgetown Traditional Council Youth Camp Participants Tour Donlin The Georgetown Traditional Council (GTC) has taken proactive steps to encourage their young people to choose a life path that includes the benefits of life in rural Alaska by creating the GTC Tribal Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Camp. This summer six of the program s participants visited Donlin camp for a tour of the project. The students, aged 14 to 19, included: Arnold Evans, Diana Evans, Jordan Evans, Tyler Samuelson, Shane Wilmarth and Renee Wilmarth. Adult chaperones, Jonathan Samuelson and Valerie Dudley, were also present as counselors. All of the participants flew to Donlin camp and visited drill operations and the camp site before having lunch in the main dining hall. Will Hartman, GTC Project Director, said that the youth camp lasted a total of eight days and was geared toward younger tribal members, showcasing the opportunities that exist for them in rural areas. The GTC youth also visited the George River fish weir, run by the Kuskokwim Native Association (KNA), and did construction work by building a shed in Georgetown. This experience, said Hartman, helped the young people get a clear, firsthand understanding of opportunities available in the middle Kuskokwim River area versus moving out of the region for work. GTC youth camp students listen as Donlin s Human Resources Manager Ross Maitland discusses core cutting techniques at the Donlin camp. Georgetown Tribal member and camp counselor Valerie Dudley (right) visits the Donlin camp with GTC youth camp participants Renee Wilmarth and Diana Evans. Kuskokwim Native Association Internship Program (Continued from page 1) fisheries monitoring projects, college interns worked with a consulting firm, Ottertail Environmental Inc., conducting electro-fishing work to gather baseline data for the Donlin Creek project. Intern Day in Aniak College Interns who complete the KNA requirements each give a formal presentation of their experiences at a public meeting in Aniak, and at the annual Partners for Fisheries Monitoring Program Intern Day, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Subsistence Management (USFWS/OSM) in Anchorage. This meeting includes college interns and their sponsors from throughout Alaska. College interns are also awarded scholarships of up to $6,500 towards their tuition. This year s KNA college interns were: Seraphim Ukatish from Nanwalek as a Partners Office Intern, currently attending the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA); Alex Nicori III from Kwethluk as a Partners Research Intern, currently attending the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF) where he is enrolled in the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program, (ANSEP); and Rochelle Sakar from Crooked Creek as a Partners Research Intern, who plans to attend UAA. The KNA Fisheries Department would like to thank all of its project cooperators, especially: the USFWS, ADF&G, Ottertail Environmental Inc., and the professionals who helped in training and mentoring our future biologists and leaders. We are also grateful for the USFWS/OSM Partners Fisheries Monitoring Program, the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim Sustainable Salmon Initiative (AYKSSI) and the Coastal Villages Region Fund for supporting the high school and college internship programs. Many thanks go to Donlin Creek LLC and AYKSSI for providing intern scholarships in 2009 and finally, congratulations to all KNA 2009 interns! KNA intern Seraphim Utakish of Nanwalek maintaining a whitefish radio telemetry receiver used to track seasonal movements of whitefish along the Kuskokwim River.

5 Questions We Heard in the Region Q: How far is the proposed mine site from the river? A: The Donlin Creek project site is located about 12 miles north of the village of Crooked Creek, which is on the Kuskokwim River. The project is within the Crooked Creek drainage, which flows south to the Kuskokwim River. The Donlin Creek mining project would be operated with a water management system that is designed and engineered to control all surface water and ground water at the site. State-of-theart planning and engineering methods are being used in the design to ensure that any water discharged from the site meets stringent water quality standards. Water quality monitoring during mining will be an important element of the plan. Within the autoclave the sulfide ore is treated with oxygen at high temperature and pressure to convert it into an oxide ore, which can then be processed using conventional methods to recover the gold. A similar process occurs in nature when sulfide rocks are exposed to oxygen in the air, but over a much longer period of time. Understanding the Yup ik and Athabaskan Cultures When the Donlin project first got under way, leaders in the region provided information about the history of the Yukon Kuskokwim region to Donlin s management team. In this series, we are publishing some of these insights for our readers who are not residents of the region. Yuuyaraq: Maintaining a sense of identity, culture and humanity is an important aspect of Yup ik culture. Literally translated, yuuyaraq means way of living or the way of the human being. As we listened during our travels in the villages this summer, we gained insight into the Yup ik and Athabaskan people s commitment to cultural preservation. Working with the residents of the YK region, we at Donlin Creek hope to preserve and honor the region s culture and identity.
