Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes: Identify at least three student learning outcomes and prepare a FORM C. Student learning outcomes are defined in terms of what students will know, or be able to do, or believe as a result of instruction. 1. Geology Masters degree students can produce a written report evaluating and summarizing new research data or internship experiences. 2. Geology Masters degree students can defend their scientific ideas orally. 3. Geology Masters internship candidates are prepared to work as geologists in Florida. 4. Geology Masters degree students have the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in their field or PhD level graduate work. 4 Student Learning Outcome #1 Geology Masters degree students can produce a written report evaluating and summarizing new research data or internship experience. Faculty committee will evaluate Master s thesis and internship reports.. Success is 95% of degree candidates passing this assessment.. ASSESSMENT REPORT Four MS candidates and one Internship candidate completed their work in the evaluation period. All five produced well-written reports. Use of Results:. 5 Student Learning Outcome #2 Geology Masters Degree (MS) students can defend their scientific ideas orally. A faculty committee will evaluate oral defense data. Success is 95% of MS candidates passing their oral defense. ASSESSMENT REPORT Four Masters Degree candidates defended their theses during the reporting period, and passed unconditionally. Therefore, 100% of MS students passed this benchmark. Use of Results: The department will continue to monitor this benchmark until we have a larger pool. 6 Student Learning Outcome #3 Geology Masters internship candidates are prepared to work as geologists in Florida. A faculty committee will evaluate internship data. Success is 95% of internship candidates receiving a satisfactory or better rating from internship supervisors. ASSESSMENT REPORT One internship candidate completed her work in the study period. She received a satisfactory or better rating on her internship evaluation. No additional candidates failed this evaluation. Use of Results: The department will continue to monitor this benchmark. 7 Student Learning Outcome #4 Geology Masters degree candidates have the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in their field or PhD level graduate school. The faculty will track graduates for 6 months. The majority of MS graduates employed in their field or accepted in a PhD program within 6 months of graduation.. ASSESSMENT REPORT - Four MS Candidates completed their degrees in the study period. Two are employed in the field of geology, one is teaching high school science, and the fourth was accepted and has begun a Ph.D. program. Use of Results:. The department is pleased with this result and will continue to monitor this benchmark Form A
