1 HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) One Dupont Circle, N.W., Suite 430 Washington, D.C (voice) (fax) March 12, 2016 PAID Summer 2016 Internship Opportunity Announcement POSITION TITLE: Geology/Mining Engineering Intern POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 2-3 SPONSORING FEDERAL AGENCY: Bureau of Land Management INTERNSHIP LOCATION (city and state): Washington, DC DESIRED MAJORS: Geology, Mining Engineering PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is to expand the Division of Solid Minerals program capacity to support the State and Field Offices field operations. The project will provide an 11-week training program for two to three interns based out of WO-320. The interns will support the WO-320 staff on policy and technical matters for 7 to 8 weeks. They will then focus on performing the duties of an entry level Geologist and/or Mining Engineer (GS-1350/880) and work with Bureau Mineral Examiners on field work in support of valid existing rights determinations for not less than two weeks. The interns will assist Certified Mineral Examiners in field examination of the mining claims. The intern(s) will work closely with the Chief Mineral Examiner, a WO Solid Minerals Division employee, as well as State Office Certified Review Mineral Examiners, State level Certified Mineral Examiners and Mineral Examiner Candidates as well as the WO-320 Division Chief and Deputy Division Chief. The project goals are to introduce the students to the policy-making process at headquarters and assist the Solid Minerals division staff on policy development and responses to the DOI Sage Grouse Implementation strategy. Thereafter the interns will assist other field personnel conducting mineral examination that will require then to map, sample, analyze, and identify mining claims and mineral resources to determine which mining claims possess valid existing rights. The interns will take part in all aspects of the field work. Knowledge of field methods, underground mapping and sampling will be utilized to make the validity determinations; which
2 will involve critical thinking and data analysis. The project will help the Washington Office and the select field offices with completion of mineral examinations. HOURS: Full-time (40 hours per week / Monday Friday) ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Completion of freshman year of college before the internship begins Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) Enrollment in a degree-seeking program (BA/BS, Masters, JD, MD, or Ph.D.) at an accredited higher education institution. Students pursuing only a credential or certificate program will be considered ineligible. Recent graduates you can only apply to the program if you will be able to complete your internship within 12 months of your graduation. Authorization or eligibility to work in the United States by law INTERNSHIP DATES: Start dates are June 2, 2016 or June 16, The internship is a minimum of 11 weeks. COMPENSATION: The rate of compensation depends on the student s class level. The Carlsbad Field Office is currently one of the busiest BLM offices in the Nation for approving oil and gas permits and realty applications. Because of this heavy work load we need an intern that will help with data entry into our SDE system. We are looking for an individual who has a good understanding of geographic sciences and computer systems to help support GIS technology. Geographical sciences include aerial photography interpretation satellite image processing, remote sensing techniques, three dimensional geographic analysis, computer based cartography, and a wide range of data collection procedures. The intern must have a thorough and effective mix of technical skills in the geographic and computer science disciplines as well as a working appreciation of the agency mission and operational procedures sufficient to support various local office programs. The intern would work alongside a seasoned employee to teach them the roles and functions of a GIS Specialist. This would provide the intern the access to one of the busiest offices in the country and a wealth of knowledge in many different geographic science practices. The intern would be taught the beginning processes of the local GIS systems. They would work with local GIS Specialists to learn the functions of majority of their job duties and responsibilities. They would also learn about working within an interdisciplinary team environment, consisting of Natural Resource Specialists, Biologists, Archaeologists, Range Management Specialists, Hydrologists, Cave and Karst Specialists, Realty Specialists, Geologist, Petroleum Engineers, and NEPA Planners. This interdisciplinary team interaction would help to
4 teach the intern about important team building skills and interactions within an office setting. The intern would also have the opportunity through the interdisciplinary team to learn about the many resources and multi-use mission that the BLM is faced with. The intern would provide input in the development of technical resolutions to Geographic Sciences problems for the purpose of determining statewide and office Bureau policy.
