7 Physical Properties The properties of all materials, or types of matter, depend on the substances that make them up. A physical property is any characteristic of matter that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances that make it up. Examples: state of matter, temperature, size of the object.

9 18 min Gallery Walk There are several new vocabulary words that are physical properties that you will learn in this lesson. You will perform a gallery walk to obtain the definitions of these words. You will have 2 minutes to write down the definition in your guided notes. You will then have 30 seconds to predict if this is a physical property belonging to metals, nonmetals, or metalloids.
10 18 min Gallery Walk When you re writing the definition, you ll be at a voice level 0. When you re predicting, you may talk at a voice level 1 to the scholars around you. There should be no more than 5 scholars to a poster at a time.
11 18 min Gallery Walk 1. Write down the definition to the word in your guided notes. 2. Predict whether this is a property of a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid.
12 2 min Vocabulary Matching Use the pictures at your table group and match them to the correct definition to check your knowledge about these physical properties. Work with your elbow partner no more than 3 people to a group. Voice level 1 2 minutes

14 Classifying Elements Every element falls into one of three categories. They are placed into these categories based on their physical properties. Many of these physical properties come from the words we just learned. What are the three categories elements are classified into?

I will show you the question on the board and you will have 30 seconds to discuss your answer and why with your table group. When the time is up, one person will hold up your group s response using the response cards at your table.
