CAUP - HELAS 1/10 CAUP contribution to HELAS on Outreach Mário João P. F. G. Monteiro (DMA/FCUP & CAUP) mjm@astro.up.pt What is CAUP? 2/10 The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto is a scientific private association of the Universidade do Porto, recognized of public utility. CAUP has started activities in October Its key objectives, as defined in the statutes, are to promote and support Astronomy through: research, education and training, outreach. At present CAUP staff and students includes: 22 researchers (PhD s), 14 PhD students, 5 administrative staff, 5 outreach staff. There are also about 35 master students and about 110 undergraduate students (Licenciatura in Astronomy). Please see 1

3/10 Objectives and commitments: Resources and commitments Dissemination of HELAS and relevant scientific results presentation of HELAS at international conferences press releases on special occasions Outreach material and activities collections of posters on relevant science topics organization of outreach events and supporting material multimedia material to be used in planetaria and/or public seminars Training material lectures notes and presentations for training multimedia material for teaching helio and asteroseismology Financial resources for CAUP (NA6 from the EC): Personnel Services & Travel ~3 years part-time technician production and printing of some material 4/10 Deliverables by CAUP (Some) activities and deliverables: Presenting HELAS and dissemination of results Regular news and press releases on Helio and Asteroseismology - preparation of the news in english & portuguese (one per month) - preparation of press releases in english & portuguese Poster presenting HELAS in international conferences - size A0 (in english) with regular updates when needed Outreach material Planning and production of a collection of posters on Helio and Asteroseismology - posters (in english & portuguese) Marking the launch of CoRoT - production of a CoRoT model (1:2) for display - printing of A4 size models for mounting Training Integrate undergraduate students in activities and production of outreach material Introducing Helio and Asteroseismology to the public and students - short introductory courses 2

5/10 Presenting HELAS Poster on HELAS: - an updated version will be produced in July - a revised (and final) version should be ready by the end of 2006 Brochure and flyer: - layout (?) and printing (500?) of an A5 brochure with 8 pages (for scientists) - layout and printing (2500?) of a flyer (half A5) with 2 sides (for the public) 6/10 News for the public Regular news: - one per month (on average) on helio and asteroseismology or related subjects (stellar structure and evolution, solar physics, etc) - each would be produced in english and portuguese Press releases: - a small pack (english and portuguese) for the press can be produced associated to special events relevant for HELAS science and activities 3

7/10 Outreach material Posters on relevant topics for Helio and Asteroseismology: - the topics and contents (text and images) should be defined with contributions from all, - the preferred size and material need to be selected, - an english version (and a portuguese one) will be produced and printed, - alternative versions will require translation by other HELAS nodes. Possible titles: The Sun and the Heliosphere (surface and atmosphere, activity, sun-earth connection,...) The inner secrets of our star (the inner structure, convection and dynamo, energy production,...) From the Sun to other stars (solar-type stars, evolution, differences and similarities,...) Understanding the suns of other worlds (what stars have planets, understanding their pecularities) Space exploration of the Sun (ground and space observations of the Sun) Navigating among the stars (ground and space observation of stars) Stars with a pulsating heart! (classes of pulsators, the instability strip,...) Hunting for the secrets of big stars (the structure and evolution of big stars,...) Human discovery of the stars (history of how humans have looked at and explained the stars)... 8/10 Events CoRoT@CAUP (FP Mobility-13, Specific Support Action) The programme to be developed is based on: 1) Exhibit at Porto Planetarium: CoRoT: Europe gets better acquainted with the Stars in search of New Worlds ( September 22nd to December 31st 2006) Exhibit materials to be used: - 1:2 model of the CoRoT space telescope (it will be built to be suspended in the air, being a robust, long lasting and secure structure) - The CoRoT space telescope - poster - CoRoT science - poster - Small scale CoRoT models to be given to children under 12 years 2) Open day: Meet CoRoT (September 22nd 2006) We intend to develop a wide variety of activities throughout the day: - A plastic arts workshop for children under 10: New Worlds - Short Course for the general public The Search for New Worlds - Short Course for undergraduate students: Stellar Seismology - Public talk: What is CoRoT - Observing session with CAUP s telescopes 4

9/10 Events of relevance to HELAS Ulysses (1990-) SOHO (1995-) HELAS could/should use some of these missions and opportunities as themes for organizing possible outreach events. GAIA (2011): The goal is to make the largest, most precise map of our Galaxy by surveying an unprecedented number of stars - more than a thousand million. Solar Orbiter (2015?): The goal is to make close-up high-resolution studies of our Sun and inner heliosphere. Solar Orbiter is intended to brave the fierce heat and carry its telescopes to just one-fifth of the Earth's distance from our nearest star. International Astronomy Year (2009): This is a very good opportunity to cover any topic in Astronomy! 10/10 Training and outreach material Production of material: - Illustrations and figures, - Small films, - Presentations. Training resources: - Index of Lectures notes, - Index of PhD Thesis, - Index of Masters Dissertations, - Database of figures fully documented (copyright restrictions may apply). Collecting the information and material that is already around is the first step! But we also need to select the best way to make it available. 5
