3 Welcome Medway Community Healthcare has offered training for schools, children s centres and preschools for many years. All training has been highly received and requests for training have increased. With this in mind, we are pleased to offer our first training brochure. We offer expert advice regarding the development of children and understand how a delay in one area can impact upon a child s ability to learn and to interact socially. All courses are age-specific and are grouped as pre-school, primary and secondary. Our course leaders have a wealth of professional experience and knowledge and all work within the NHS. The pricing for our courses is only 100 per delegate for a six hour session. This price includes standard training material, refreshments and free parking. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch. All training is provided in our purpose-built training rooms which are suitable for practical and group work. 3

4 Elklan training Speech and language support for under fives For those working with children aged 2-5 years. Provides information and strategies to develop young children s communications skills - especially those identified as having needs in this area. This course is also suitable for children learning English as an additional language and other special educational needs. Course details The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in England recognises communication and language as one of the three prime areas for learning and development. Elklan s speech and language support for under fives is a nationally accredited course aimed at the early years workforce. Course aims Build confidence and skills to support the communication and language development of children aged under five but especially those with speech and language difficulties. Offer practical advice and strategies to support parents and families. Improve the life chances of young children. 4

5 What will learners receive? All learners will receive full training materials. Those who seek accreditation ( 65.00) will also receive level three or level two, nine credit Award in Knowledge and Practice to Support the Communication Skills of under fives (both levels are now on the QCF). How is it delivered? The course is designed to be delivered as an intensive three day programme with sufficient time between sessions to consolidate knowledge. The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos, and group discussion to engage learners. All 3 days need to be attended by the same delegate. 6 School ready An osprey training course Occupational therapy Speech and language therapy Physiotherapy Reaching Early Years Course details The teaching material will focus on the EYFS three prime areas of learning; communication, physical and personal and social emotional development and explore in depth how difficulties in movement and communication impact upon the child s ability to access literacy and mathematics. Course aims This course is aimed at supporting staff in pre-school establishments, children s centres and private, voluntary and independent settings to maximise children s ability to prepare for school entry. 6

The course brings together key skills from Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy to enable delegates to deliver strategies to help all areas of a child s development. The course is fun, dynamic and interactive and includes practical activities that allow participants to explore the challenges children may experience. Trainers use interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos, and group discussion to engage learners. The course leaders are experts in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy and will help delegates to develop a holistic approach to supporting children. Interested? 8 Introduction to speech sound development and cued articulation Course details This course is suitable for Teachers and Teaching Assistants who work with children who present with speech sound difficulties. Course Leaders will cover strategies to support speech sound production and also how to implement speech sound targets within the educational setting. Developed to help children who find it difficult to develop speech sounds without support. Provides specific targeted interventions. Cued articulation is a visual system which uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are made. Particularly beneficial for those with pronunciation difficulties and those with English as an additional language. Course aims Learners will be able to:- Produce all cued articulation consonant hand signs. Produce basic vowel signs. Understand the hierarchy when working on speech sounds. Feel confident to interpret and work on a speech sound target. Become familiar with strategies to elicit speech sounds in isolation and how and when to develop these sounds into words development. 8

9 How is it delivered? The course is delivered as an intensive one day programme and uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos, and group discussion to engage learners. It will introduce learners to the cued articulation approach and support them to become familiar with all cues for consonant sounds. Training will also introduce learners to the typical and atypical processes of speech sound development. Learners will become familiar with strategies to support speech sound production in an engaging way. 10 Sensory motor training (primary) Why can t I sit still? Course details This course is for staff working in a primary school setting aimed at SENCo s, TA s and teachers. Trainers have worked extensively with children and young people with developmental co-ordination disorders and sensory processing needs. We will deliver experiential workshops to help understand how it feels to have sensory/motor difficulties. We will teach strategies for school staff to enable children to learn. Course aims A one-day course that will provide an overview of the link between sensory processing and motor co-ordination, and how this affects a child s ability to access their learning opportunities in school. This is a fun, dynamic and interactive day that includes practical activities. It will provide a basic understanding of how sensory processing impacts on a child s ability to concentrate, write, have good postural control, develop hand strength and dexterity, develop visual motor integration, develop visual perception and ocular motor control skills. These vital skills enable a child to function successfully in the classroom and primary school environment. The course delegate will leave with a toolbox of skills to enable staff to deliver effective programmes. 10
