William was the fourth born. He had one older brother, James (June 16, 1823), two older sisters, Mary Ann (February 28, 1825) and Elizabeth Margaret (April 19, 1827), and one younger sister, Sarah Jane (August 3, 1835). Little is known about William s early life. He married Rosanna Heater in 1851, over ten years before he enlisted in the Indiana Volunteers. William Greene Brown was a Union soldier during the American Civil War. He served in Company B of the 89 th Regiment in the Indiana Volunteers. Company B was also known as Sam Henry s Guards. According to enlistment records, William G. Brown resided in Pendleton (Madison County), Indiana. He mustered in during August 1862 in Wabash, Indiana. His regiment marched to Memphis, Vicksburg, and finally mustered out in Mobile, Alabama. The regiment traveled over ten thousand miles during the war and fought in skirmishes as far south as Mississippi and Alabama. During this time he achieved the rank of Corporal. Brown was discharged on July 19, 1865 and returned home. After the War, he and his wife, Rosanna, had five children The oldest was Sarah Elizabeth Brown (Hensley). Sarah Elizabeth was followed by Julia Margaret Brown (Craig), John William Brown, James Wesley Brown (1866), and Jean Brown (Bonifield) (1870). According to the 1880 United States Census, William s family moved to Marion County, where he continued his occupation as a farmer. His date of death is unknown. Accessed August 17, SoldierHistory?U& SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The William Greene Brown Collection is a small body of manuscripts and photographs. Much of the manuscript

3 material details the genealogy of the Brown family. Included is a letter written from Jean Brown Bonifield to her cousin, Walter L. Smith. The letter outlines a family history including some birth and death records. William G. Brown s discharge papers from the Indiana Volunteers are also included. The visual portion of the collection features many large photographs of the Brown Family. Several unidentified tin types of individuals are also included. Series 1- Jean Brown Bonifield: This series contains materials related to William G. Brown s youngest daughter, Jean Brown Bonifield. The aforementioned letter is included, along with a letter written by her daughter, Alice Bonifield. Series 2- Civil War: William G. Brown s discharge papers are included (July 19, 1865). A broadside of Capt. Sam Henry s Guards (Company B, 89 th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers) from 1862 is also in the collection. One of the few identifiable photos in the collection is an official photograph of Brown in his military regalia. A tin type of this same photograph is also included in the collection. Series 3- Identified People: This series includes identified photographs. There are images of William and Jane McGreggor Brown (William s parents), and William Webb (William s brother-in-law). Series 4- Unidentified People: This series consists of nine photographs of unidentified people. It is divided into two categories, unidentified women and unidentified groups. Most of the photographs have dates included, ranging from Series 5- Tin Type Photographs: This series consists of tin type photographs. Some are identifiable, most are not. The tin types are divided into five categories: identified men, unidentified men, unidentified women, unidentified children, and unidentified groups. There are nineteen tin types in the collection. The identified men are Frederick Heater (William s father-in-law) and a military photo of William G. Brown. Series 1: Jean Brown Bonifield Letter written from Jean Brown Bonifield to her cousin,walter L. Smith, discussing the Brown family history (May 6, 1948). Brown family genealogy from birth of William Brown (1803) to marriage of Miriam Bonifield to John Maurice Jones (1946). Some birth and death dates included. Letter from Alice Bonifield (Jean s daughter) to Mrs. Abig, The letter detailed the genealogy papers sent from Jean Bonifield to Walter L. Smith. Series 2: Civil War Manuscript dated July 19, 1865, officially discharging William G.
