3 NESA and HUMLOG Institute Our role is to to secure the supply of critical goods and services for Finland. In extreme situations Finland might need logistics for humanitarian purposes. NESA is not a scientific institution. Our practical research and know-how < -- > HUMLOG Institute s research 3

5 Challenges of security supply in Finland: Cold climate (heating, agriculture) Distant location, dependence on sea transport Energy intensive industry Sparsely populated country, long distances in transportation and in general: The ability and means of the market to secure the supply are changing continuously The increasing vulnerability of digital technology and open networks The controlling of networked systems is difficult because of their extensiveness and complexity. 5

13 Goals for transport logistics Emphasis is on sea transport and food and energy distribution Goals set for Domestic fleet in sea, land and air, including icebreakers Adequate number of ice-strengthened vessels and aircraft to maintain foreign trade Know-how and vehicles for special transports, e.g. fuel and refrigerated goods. 13
