1 DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK To develop a humane and compassionate studentry with a firm commitment to serve the total needs of man and society. HISTORY The Silliman community is highly motivated for community welfare. This is due partly to the foreign faculty who brought with them the spirit of community concern through formal association, putting to focus our bayanihan spirit, and the university s concern for excellent and responsive extension work. This motivation is the basis of the social work course. In 1969, Dr. I. Hubert Reynolds and Mrs. Belen Sapinoso (M.S.S.D., Negros Oriental in charge) initiated the offering of basic courses in social work which were offered in the undergraduate and graduate program (as electives). Social work educators in Manila handled the courses seminarstyle during the summer of By June 1969, the first two years of the B.S.S.W. program were approved. Dr. Reynolds and Mrs. Ester C. Delfin (part-time) handled the courses. The following year, Mrs. Delfin became coordinator of the social work program. The Social Work Department was set up in 1974, with Dr. Luis Q. Lacar as the first chairperson. Extension work went hand in hand with theoretical courses even before the program became a department. Initial coordination of welfare program in the city was attempted. This led to a tie-up between Silliman University and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) in 1975 when the City Coordinating Council (DUCOCO) was formally organized. 166 In SY the Social Work Graduate Program (M.S. Major in Social Work) was started.from a one-person program the department was staffed with four M.S. in Social Work and one M.S. in Community Development. The Department has three full-time faculty members. OBJECTIVES To equip students with basic competencies in: Problem - solving which enables the clients systems to generate in finding solution to difficulties and problems; bringing needs and resources together wherein the clients systems are assisted to locate, utilized and/ or create if necessary internal and external resources which enable them to overcome their difficulties and problems to improve the quality of life; and documenting the level of adequacy of social services rendered to client systems including the preparation of case records, documenting the professional intervention/treatment rendered and the effect on the client.

Emphasis is on the development of the professional self through conscious awareness of one s self, values, attitudes, and how these affect others and how these are shaped by the socio-cultural forces. SW21 FILIPINO PERSONALITY Concepts and theories of human behavior and environment focused on the Filipino and his family, relevant to social work practice. SW22 SOCIAL WELFARE PERSPECTIVES & REALITIES Realities, concepts, models, theories, approaches, perspectives and values of social development in the context of Philippine Third World realities. Includes history, changing concepts/emerging trends, philosophy and fields of social welfare. SW23 COMMUNICATION IN SOCIAL WORK The course of study includes the tools and skills used in social work practice that distinguishes its distinct competence as well as principles and processes from those of other disciplines. It provides a framework for understanding the role of communication in the problem-solving process and how this is utilized in social work practice. SW 24 SOCIAL WELFARE POLICIES AND PROGRAMS A study and analysis of current social welfare policies, programs and services both government and non-government in the context of national development; the role and contribution of social work to social welfare. 168

4 SW 25 The Filipino Family General introduction to the family as a social institution: its biological foundations, history, family norms, and cross cultural patterns of family structure. Problems of courtship, wedding, becoming husband and wife, family finance, insurance, legal status, parent-child relationship, divorce, physical and religious aspect of marriage. Family Planning based on Philippine culture is integrated into the course. SW 30 Social Work Administration and Supervision The course deals with the basic concepts and principles in administration and supervision. It also deals with the scope, philosophy, objectives and functions of social welfare as well as the issues pertaining to social welfare problems, policies, and programs. The hanging concepts of social welfare are analyzed with particular emphasis on its major function in the Philippines and its role as an instrument of social development. Social policy, planning and program management are included in the analysis of social welfare programs. SW 31 Helping Approaches in Working with Individuals Theories, principles, methods, approaches and techniques in assessment and interventions in working with individuals and families.it emphasizes the use of the helping process to enhance an individual s social functioning, maximizing client s resources and capabilities in developing effective relationship with his/ her immediate environment. SW 32 Helping Approaches In Working With Groups Theories, principles, method, skills and techniques in assessment and interventions in working with social groups. Inlcudes the basic attitudes, values and skills necessary in helping social work groups work for solution of their problems through the use of the helping proces. Further, group case analisys particularly of cases in Philippine setting shall be introduced, so as to give students a comprehensive and analytical view of the existing socio-cultural, economic, political, ecological and religious realities that affect the lives of the marginalized sectors of society SW 34 Social Work Research Ii Application of principles, methods and process and the development of corresponding skills in the actual conduct of social work research proposals. SW 35E Counseling In Social Work Focuses on social work perspective of counseling. On the broader level, the course presents an overview of the foundations, theories, and practices of counseling in social work practice. SW 36 Helping Approaches In Working With Communities Theories, principles, models, skills and trends in Community Organizing. Strategies in community mobilization focused on socio-economic enterprises. SW 37 Social Work Helping Process 169

5 Usually described also as the social work helping process, the generic helping process in social work, the social work problem-solving process. The course will focus on the social work helping method with individuals, families, groups, and communities. SW 38 Social Deviance And Social Work A socio-psychological perspective on deviations in human behavior in relation to social work. SW 39 Child Welfare Recognizes that children have the basic human rights and the need for full protection and promotion of these rights. Places emphasis on the need to mainstream efforts from all sectors to protect and uphold the rights of children. SW 41 Field Instruction 15 units A one semester practicum designed to give students practice under controlled but realistic situations in various social welfare institutions. Supervision by the faculty and agency field instructor who is a registered social worker. Prerequisite: All major courses except SW 77. SW 42 Seminar in Social Work Re-examination of the self in relation to one s development as a senior social work student; workshop on identified needs and special topic on action plan for life goals and continuing self development in the context of social realities and social work SW 43E Health Care and Social Work Social work in the field of health as concerned with continiuosly defining and solving problems aimed at facilitating and strengthening social relationships and mutual adjustments between individuals and their environments. Focuses on the interplay of economic, social and psychological factors in medical care, primary health are strategy and the practice of medical social work. SW 44E Principles & Management of Cooperatives Nature, concepts and principles of cooperatives as an effective instrument in community development.
