Of the 951 working women in their 20s and 30s who applied to take part in the event, 56 participants interested in learning English were selected. As many people may not know how to begin learning English, the event gave them some tips, starting with the help of popular film commentator and TV talent LiLiCo. Freelance announcer Akiko Abe brought in LiLiCo, wearing a wide smile and a vivid blue dress, which drew considerable applause from the guests. LiLiCo was interviewed about her experiences, from her first years in Japan to being a film commentator as part of the widely watched Saturday TV show King s Brunch. LiLiCo got the audience further excited by showing some slides she brought of herself with Hollywood celebrities and other stories from behind the scenes with such celebrities. For some, speaking English gives them the chance to step into another world. In LiLiCo s case, she got the chance to interview Hollywood celebrities. Now, she is actively involved in many types of media in Japan, such as television, radio and magazines. Born to a Swedish father and Japanese mother in Stockholm, she did not even know Japanese when she first came to Japan at the age of 18. English was out of the question. She explained how she learned languages by watching Japanese TV every day or going to bars by herself to make English-speaking friends. She talked about difficulties that she went through that most people also experience when studying new languages. Even if she could understand what

5 5 10 people said, she got frustrated since she could not say what she really meant in the other language. Also, she confessed that early on when she was doing interviews with Japanese people, she received some complaints because she did not know how to use honorific Japanese expressions at the time. She remained determined, however, and told the audience not to be afraid of such setbacks since everyone can learn something through failure.
