1 Small Group Generosity- Making someone s day by giving something away Luke 12:13-21 Dec. 3/4 Just for Teachers: As you look at this lesson plan, it is broke down into 3 parts : Introducing children and families to know God- This is usually using their Bible and helping them navigate it so that they can come closer to God : God uses relationships to change lives- This activity is usually a prayer activity so that the children and you can build relationships together. : We are most like Jesus when we are serving and telling people about him. This activity is an application activity so that children will learn principles to apply in their everyday lives so they can share the good news The lesson every week is based on a Bottom Line: This is what we want the kids to know every week when they leave. Your goal should be to say the Bottom Line or have the children say the bottom line 20 times in the time you are with them. They will learn what the bottom line means by the activities that you do during class time. Remember to relate everything this week to the Bottom Line. This week s Bottom Line is: People are always more important than stuff. Supplies: Stickers (5 per child), marshmallows, small tubes of cupcake icing, gumdrops, other decorations, Ziploc baggie with fork, sticker, marker, piece of paper in it. (One per small group) : Snowman Bible Verse (memory verse activity) Step One: Have fun with each other by making snowmen out of marshmallows! Use icing to hold the marshmallows together, for eyes, the nose, and make them festive using the other decorations Orange. All rights reserved. 1

2 Step Two: Help each other find the memory verse for the month: 1 Timothy 6:18. Challenge the kids to work together without your help. Let kids who are already good at finding verses help the other kids. Remind kids that [Apply] when we share our knowledge about things with others, we re showing generosity! Finding verses with kids: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. (Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find Timothy in the list under New Testament. When the kids find 1 Timothy, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find 1 Timothy. Help the kids find the page. When they find it, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find chapter 6. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Help them find verse 18 in chapter 6. Step Three: Have each child put as much of their snowman in their mouth as they can and then recite the Bible verse! Do it as a group too, if you like! Did you guys think it was a little difficult to talk while you had all those marshmallow snowmen in your mouth? [Apply] When we try to jam pack ourselves full of stuff like the rich man in today s story, there s not much room for anything else, is there? A lot of times we can make the big mistake of doing this in our lives too letting stuff get in the way of people and even God. God says that [Impress] people are always more important than stuff and that we shouldn t stuff everything we can into our own lives, but be willing to share what we have with the people around us! Pray Ask the kids to calmly work together to unwrap the present. One by one, allow kids to take an object out of the box and discuss ways to show generosity with the item. For example: A fork set the dinner table without being asked, feed someone who can t feed themselves, wash the dishes after dinner, etc. After all of the objects have been discussed, brainstorm and write down a group prayer asking God to help the kids be generous with their words, attitudes, and actions. On a sheet of construction paper, let the kids either write their own prayer or copy the group s prayer. Encourage them to tape the prayers to their mirrors at home. God wants us to remember that [Impress] people are more important than stuff. [Apply] One way we can make sure to remember this is by being generous with our words, attitudes, and actions! Take time this week to practice generosity and remember to spend time with Jesus too! 2011 Orange. All rights reserved. 2

3 Stick it to Ya! (application activity / classroom-wide activity) Pass out five stickers to each child. Explain that the object of the game is to get rid of all your stickers by sticking them to someone else! Play one round or a few whatever you think the room can handle! Each round should only be about a minute long so that play doesn t become too chaotic! If you have a very large room, you could tape off a smaller playing area to keep things from getting too wild. Or you could come up with different challenges for each round like give people stickers only on their arms or legs or back. Pick a spot in the room (or it could be just outside the designated playing area), and whenever a kid gets rid of all his stickers, he should run and touch that spot. Each round stops when one kid hits the designated spot. Generosity is making someone s day by giving something away. [Apply] When we show generosity, it helps us know how to live and we grow like Jesus did. What do you think might have happened if the goal of this game was to get as many stickers as you can? (Possible responses include: People might have argued, stole stickers, and others might end up with none.) If everyone is just looking out for himself or herself, the world seems like a different place, right? That s why it s important to remember that [Impress] people are always more important than stuff and God wants us to [Recycle] treat others the way we want to be treated by being generous with what we have! 2011 Orange. This week s Bottom Line is: Supplies: Memory Mash-up (Activity Page- one per child), pencils, reg and green construction paper (One per child), markers, stocking,(one per small group) Stuffed Stocking (Activity Page), Post-its, Don t let stuff get in the way of loving Jesus : Memory Mash-up (memory verse activity) Pass out the Activity Page and assist kids in unscrambling the words, if necessary. When all of the kids have unscrambled the words, look up 1 Timothy 6:18 together and read it out loud from the Bible. Practice committing the verse to memory Orange. All rights reserved. 1

6 [Impress] Don t let stuff get in the way of loving Jesus. The Bible is a gift that God has given us. It is full of God s thoughts, His promises, stories about how He keeps His promises, it s full of verses that give us comfort when we re sad or feel alone, it has adventurous stories and mysteries of the universe. God gave us His Word so that, by reading it, we could build a friendship with Him the Creator of everything! Wow! [Apply] A great way to put Jesus first in our lives is by reading the Bible! Make God s day by generously giving Him your time and full attention! Instruct kids to write down the definition of generosity, which is making someone's day by giving something away. Also, let them write a prayer asking God to help us put Jesus first. Let kids decorate the paper however they wish and take it home to remind them to be generous all month long! [Apply] Don t let stuff get in the way of loving Jesus. We can trust God no matter what. So, we can trust that when we ask Him to help us do something that He wants us to, He ll do it! This week, ask God to help you put Jesus first no matter what! Stuffed Stockings (application activity / review the Bible story) Create two columns on your table by using post its. Label the left column MONEY and leave the second one blank. One by one, pull out each word from the stocking and discuss if the item is something that you can buy with money. Using one color of marker, write positive responses in the MONEY column and, using the other color, negative responses in the other. (For example: Wii would go into the MONEY column, and hope would go into the other column.) When all of the subjects have been discussed, reveal the only thing that will give us everything we need by writing the word JESUS on the top of the column. Jesus is the only one who can offer us everything that really matters in life. [Apply] We can have all of the stuff that this world has to offer, but if we don t have love, faith, peace, kindness, and patience, we re missing out on God s best for us! This week s Bottom Line is: Supplies : Nativity Re-run Activity Pages(3 per small group), Popsicle sticks (10 per small group), crayons, glue, safety scissors, ball (One per small group) God gave the greatest gift when He gave us Jesus. : Look up the memory verse together as a group. After that, form a circle. Give one kid the ball and have them say the first word of the verse. Instruct the group to pass the ball for every word backwards, forwards, across, high, roll. Challenge your group to do it faster and faster! [Impress] God gave the greatest gift when He gave us Jesus. Another great gift He gave us was the Bible. The Bible is like a letter sent from God to us with instructions on how to live 2011 Orange. All rights reserved. 1

10 the best life possible! God is a great example of giving generously because not only did He give us Jesus, but He also gave us the Bible. God is a giver and it makes Him happy to give. [Apply] So when we follow God s example and are generous with our stuff and our time, we re showing others how great our God is. Find a quiet spot and explain to kids that one very creative way to pray is to use your imagination when you talk to God. Read the following aloud to your group to walk them through the night that God gave us the greatest gift. Tell kids to lay down flat on their backs and close their eyes. The prayer takes approximately three to six minutes. (Slowly) Imagine that you are lying on a cloud. Wouldn t that be a fun place to pray? Keep your eyes closed but imagine that you are looking up at the night sky. The stars are brighter than you have ever seen them and there are more of them too. Look all over the sky, as far as you can. See them twinkle? One star seems to shine brighter than all the rest. It shines so brightly; your eye always keeps coming back to it. Slowly, you notice that this star is shining down on the earth like a small and faint sunbeam. You start to move to the place where the sunbeam meets the earth. Can you hear the dry earth crackle beneath your feet as you walk? Hear your footsteps. Hear the breeze through the palm trees. It sounds like rain. Feel the cool desert breeze against your face. You re getting closer. As you come closer to the place, you enter an old town and hear people s voices. They are laughing. Plates are clanging in the windows above you. It feels like the whole city is having a party. You smell bread baking and strangers smile as you pass them by. The golden glow from the oil lamps in the windows lights your way as you follow the star. As you walk, you find yourself stopped right in front of an inn. Looking up at the sky, you see the star shining just behind the building. Making your way to the corner of the building, you notice a very faint light coming from the opening of the cave where the animals sleep. Taking a few steps closer, you hear voices. They are very quiet but happy. You smell hay and animals as you come closer. Finally, you are at the cave opening. As you carefully look inside, you see two donkeys, a goat, chickens, and sheep huddled closely together. And nearby, there s a family. There is a woman lying down and a man kneeling beside her. You come a bit closer and the woman smiles at you. She is holding something in her arms. She lowers what she is holding to reveal a newborn baby. Her face is glowing and the man is smiling too. You reach out gently and touch the head of the baby. He s sleeping. His head is fuzzy and warm Orange. All rights reserved. 2

11 Heavenly Father, thank You for this precious gift. This is the child You promised would come to save us, the one You promised would be the way back to You. Thank You for always keeping Your promises. Thank You for loving us so much. [Apply] Help me to love Jesus and live a grateful and generous life. (Pause.) If there is anything else you want to pray, you can do that now. When you re done, just open your eyes and sit up quietly until every one else is finished. The story you heard today was true. Everything in the Bible is true. God loves you so much that He sent Jesus to earth to live and later, to die for us. What an amazing gift. So no matter what, always remember that [Impress] God gave us the greatest gift when He gave us Jesus. Nativity Re-run (application activity / review the Bible story) Before Large Group, kids colored each character of the day s story, cut it out, and glued it to the Popsicle stick. The characters should be dry now. Invite the kids to finish coloring and decorating the characters (if needed), and then re-tell the story in their own words using the Popsicle stick characters. They could use just a table or the whole room as their stage, whatever your environment is more conducive to. (Kids could even do a puppet show, using a couple kids as the puppet booth that the puppet masters hide behind.) The Christmas story is a story about generosity. God didn t have to give us anything, let alone His one and only Son. God wasn t only making our day by giving something away; He was making our whole lives better forever! [Impress] God gave the greatest gift when He gave us Jesus. [Apply] And because God first showed generosity by giving US the greatest gift, we should also give to others Orange.
