Essential Oils are volatile liquids that are distilled from plants, the life blood of plants, their vital fluids. In his book Healing Oils of the Bible, Dr. David Stewart says: They are called essential because they are necessary for the life of the plant and contain the essence of the plant.... Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules that can penetrate into every cell, administering healing therapy at the most fundamental levels of our body. They differ from the fatty oils we use for cooking. Fatty oils are composed of molecules much too large to penetrate to the cellular level. 5 Essential Oils In the Bible Today what we consider Alternative Medicine is actually Original Medicine. On the third day of creation God created vegetation, plants yielding seed and trees bearing fruit. We can find essential oils mentioned in 70% of the books in the Bible. Many people are surprised to realize they are even mentioned. Genesis talks about oils used for burial and embalming (this is also mentioned in the Gospels), Exodus references oils related to worship, kings are anointed in Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. Matthew and Luke bring up oils as items to be tithed. In Esther and the Song of Solomon they are used as perfumes and they are used for healing in many many books! (Including Numbers, Leviticus, Isaiah, Mark, John, and James) Then there are even more places oils are used or alluded to for their spiritual and emotional effects. Here are a few verses, a tiny taste of what you can find: Proverbs 21:20 says: There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise. Psalm 133:2 It s like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon his beard, even Aaron s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments. The Hebrew for the word anoint is mä shakh which means to smear, spread, or massage, and often to pour oil over the head or body. 6 COMMON SCENTS GUIDELINES FOR SAFE USE OF YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS Therapeutic-grade essential oils are strong and safe when used as directed. Below are some preventative precautions to help you have an enjoyable experience using Young Living Essential Oils. 1. Always test for skin sensitivity and keep a bottle of V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil, Massage Oil Base or any pure olive oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation. Water does not help. 2. Read the complete label before using essential oils. 3. Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use. If a child swallows an essential oil, administer milk, honey or another safe, oil-soluble liquid such as soy or rice milk. If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years. 4. Do not use essential oils rich in menthol (such as Peppermint or Thieves) neat (undiluted) on the throat or neck area of children under 3 years of age. 5. The citrus-based oils of Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Orange and Tangerine as well as oil blends with a heavy citrus concentration such as White Angelica and Purification should not be used on areas of the skin that will be exposed to the sun or UV rays within 72 hours. They may cause an increased reaction to the sun. (Read: can cause severe burns! I ve seen this happen!) 6. Keep essential oils away from the eyes and out of your ears. Do not handle contact lenses or rub your eyes with essential oils on your fingers. If the oils should get into your eyes, soothe with a drop of vegetable oil, not water! 7. Oils with high phenol content Oregano, Helichrysum, Cinnamon, Thyme, Clove, Lemongrass, Bergamot, Thieves, and ImmuPower may damage contact lenses and irritate eyes. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before handling contact lenses. 8. Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using these essential oils: Hyssop, Fennel and Idaho Tansy. 9. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Mix your oil with Epsom salts, baking soda or bath gel then add to the bath. 10. Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe by the FDA) essential oils internally, always dilute with an oil soluble liquid like honey, olive oil, rice milk or almond milk 11. Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using essential oils containing constituents with hormone-like activity, such as Clary Sage, Sage, Idaho Tansy, Juniper and Fennel. 10. People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on a small area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the arm, before applying the oil on other areas. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places to use essential oils.
