1 Cover Sheet For the Presenter The following storyhour program is designed for preschoolers (primarily 3- and 4-year olds). You don t need to read the leader s comments word-for-word, but try to include the information in your own words. Of course, if you don t have parents attending with the children, you can skip those asides. The information that is just for you is in italics so don t read that text. The general outline of our storytime is: I. Opening Song II. Welcome/Introductory Comments III. Rhyme IV. Quieting rhyme V. Book VI. Song/Chant VII. Book VIII. Rhyme IX. Activity X. Extra Rhyme XI. Closing Rhyme Feel free to substitute your own opening and closing rhymes as well as any rhymes with a similar theme that the children have heard before. Repetition of songs and action rhymes from previous storytimes is better than introducing all new ones. Be sure to practice saying the new rhymes several times yourself so that you keep the rhythm easily. We have provided several items that we think will be useful: *Flannel board cut-outs. Look for a link to these on the website where you found this storytime plan. * Craft ideas to offer after your storytime has officially ended. *Take-home materials.

2 Little Miss and Mister -- Manners Start with a simple song, sung to the tune of Happy Birthday. Opening Song Good morning to you Good morning to you Good morning, dear Tommy, Good morning, to you. (Repeat with all of the children s names if possible if your group is too large, just substitute the word children and sing the verse 3 or 4 times. Invite everyone to sing along as they join the group. You might use a puppet helper to sing Good morning to you to remind everyone of your name.) Introduction Welcome to storytime. I am glad you could all be here today. We are going to be sharing some rhymes and books. Our theme today is good manners things like remembering to say please and thank you. To the caregivers: Adults, you may remember this rhyme from your childhood -- please join me in this updated version. Rhyme use with flannelboard pieces Old King Cole was a merry old soul And a merry old soul was he He called for his juice And he called for his snack And he called for his playthings three

3 Now, Old king Cole was a merry old soul Cause he had good manners like you When he called for his juice And he called for his snack He remembered to say please, too. So, Old king Cole was a merry old soul And his servants were never blue When they brought him his juice And they brought him his snack He remembered to say thank you. To the adults: Notice that we used flannelboard pieces with the words please and thank you. Pointing out that words represent things and ideas helps create Print Awareness -- being aware of the importance of print in the world. [Put up the crayon with the words Print Awareness or point to your poster of the six early literacy skills if you have one.] Now it s time to settle down for a story. Let s get all of our wiggles out now: Quieting Rhyme Prepare a wiggle holder (a jar, box or basket to hold wiggle worms) and 5 worms per child. You might use packing worms, die cut worms or small strips of paper that are fan-folded. Give each child 5 worms and explain that they are going to put their wiggles in a jar until storytime is over. Then they may have them back. To the adults (as you are passing out the worms : Counting and putting things in order also help develop skills your child will need to recognize letters and patterns of letters that make up words. Watch for activities during our storytime programs that you can repeat at home.

4 Use the following rhyme to collect the wiggle worms: 5 little wiggles I just can t ignore, I put one in the jar (or can, box, basket) And now I have 4 4 little wiggles Inside of me I put one in the jar And now I have 3 3 little wiggles Don t know what to do So I put one in the jar And now I have 2 2 little wiggles Now I m almost done I put another in the jar And now I have 1 1 little wiggle All alone I put it in the jar And now I have none You might hold up a large letter W and point out that wiggle and worm both begin with the sound of W ( wuh ). [Optional.] [This is a rhyme you may want to copy and use over and over until it becomes familiar.] Book Read How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food? by Jane Yolen; Excuse Me: A Little Book of Manners by Karen Katz; Monster Manners by Bethany Roberts; This Little Piggy s Book of Manners by Kathryn Madeline Allen; Perfect Pigs: An

5 Introduction to Manners by Marc Brown or another book about manners suitable for this age. Song/Chant To the adults: This next activity is really about putting things in a specific order or pattern. As I mentioned before, such activities help develop basic skills needed for learning to read. Play Set the Table with the flannelboard pieces and this rhyme (sung to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush: This is the place we put our spoon, Put our spoon, put our spoon, This is the place we put our spoon, When we set the table. This is the place we put our cup, Put our cup, put our cup, This is the place we put our cup, When we set the table. Continue with knife, fork, and plate if the children seem to be enjoying the game. Add the food at the end just for fun. Book Read another selection from the list above or substitute your own favorite book about manners. If you have a slightly older (preschool) group, you might like the book Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. This book is a great vocabulary builder introducing concepts like cooperate and trustworthy. -4-

6 Rhyme There is a magic word I say When I want a drink or treat It helps me get the things I want It really is quite neat! Can you guess the special word That works so well for me? I just remember to say Please! -- Good manners don t you see? There is another thing I say That shows good manners, too. Whenever someone helps me out I always say Thank You! Activity Play a pattern game using shapes like circles, squares, and triangles (3 or 4 size). Begin with 3 shapes and have the children tell you what to put up to repeat the pattern. You may have to show a couple of examples to get started. Continue as long as the children are interested. Extra Rhyme See pages 183 through 191 of 1001 Rhymes & Fingerplays for additional rhymes to use if you have time. Now it s time to end our storyhour. To the caregivers: Feel free to stay a while and do a craft or check out some books to take home. Remember to say some rhymes or sing some songs with your child this week! -5-

7 Closing Rhyme See you later, alligator (use hand to shade your eyes as if searching) In a while, crocodile (point to watch or clock) Bye-bye, butterfly (wave) Toodle-oo, kangaroo (wave hankie) Time to go, buffalo (look at watch and shake head as if running late) Just like that, fat cat (snap fingers) It s the end, my friend. (shrug shoulders and throw up hands in a giving up gesture) Don t forget to give back the wiggle worms to the children who want them! Crafts: We like the idea of providing a craft at the end of storyhour. Something simple is fine. This gives parents a chance to visit and it re-inforces what the children learned. If you have parents leave for storytime, you might invite them to come back for crafts as they drop off their child. Other craft ideas: Give each child a small paper plate and plastic cutlery to practice table setting on a construction paper placemat. If you have some wood blocks (or something similar), have the parents and children practice making patterns as we did during storytime. Have them begin with 3 items and progress to 4 or 5 if it is going well. You might suggest other ways of doing patterns such as using color instead of shape i.e. use circles only in assorted colors.

8 Little Miss and Mister -- Manners Take-Home Sheet Here is a rhyme about manners that you can practice saying at home. Repetition is important, so try to take the time to repeat this rhyme with your child. I just remember to say Please! -- Good manners don t you see? There is another thing I say That shows good manners, too. Whenever someone helps me out I always say Thank You! To promote Print Awareness, you might make some signs for your refrigerator that say Please and Thank you. Make one with your child s name as well! Bringing it home... Let your child help you set the table this week. Putting things in a particular order helps build pre-reading skills. Ask your child if they can tell what is missing from the picture on the back of this page.
