1 MGMT 550 ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE Syllabus Internet Fall 2014 Instructor: Office: Online Office phone: Textbook: Readings: Software: Cummings, T. G. & Worley, C. G. (2009). Organization Development and Change (9th ed.). Mason, OH: South-Western-Cengage Learning. Additional readings may be provided by the instructor as necessary. Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. A new version of the text also comes with Infotrac access, which is an online library of resources. You can also use the college s databases to do your research. Course Description & Objectives Organizational development is considered as a multi-step process that may involve a wide variety of interventions. Interventions from those involving basic human processes to those requiring planning at the strategic level are considered in this course, with a particular emphasis on selecting appropriate interventions based on thoughtful diagnosis of organizational issues. Prerequisite: acceptance to a graduate program at Peru State College or permission of the Instructor. Upon completion of this course you should be able to: 1. Describe the steps in a typical organization development process. 2. Describe diagnostic approaches to determine opportunities for correction/enhancement. 3. Describe and know when to utilize human process, techno structural, human resource management, and strategic interventions. 4. Write an informed change process proposal which reflects knowledge of contemporary organization development theory. At the beginning of the course, it is discussed how these objectives fit into the College s and School s mission and goals. The Instructor reserves the right to modify any aspect of the course syllabus or content. Any modifications will be communicated to students in advance. Expectations & Instructional Approach There will be weekly assignments and activities in this course. If you cannot commit to working on the course each week, you should not proceed until you are ready for a challenging, accelerated experience. As an intellectually challenging graduate course, there is a great deal of reading and work required in a relatively short time. If you keep up with the course schedule, take personal responsibility to actively participate, and
2 make sure you have completed the readings and other assignments when due, you will succeed. I know as highly capable professionals you will be up to the task and will find the topics relevant and interesting. In order to foster a climate conducive to learning, please join me in treating your classmates with respect. I encourage students to ask questions, seek my help when you need it, and help your classmates understand the material (short of doing the work for them of course). Assessment and Grading Three approaches will be employed to facilitate learning and assess your understanding of the material in the course: discussion, quizzes, case reports/discussions, and a research/best practices grounded proposal paper communicating recommendations regarding a proposed change process in your organization, community, or for an assigned integrative case. The course schedule appears at the end of this document. Discussion Board: A few brief forums are available on the main discussion board for the entire class to complete. Personal introductions, an introductory discussion to the main course concept, and course feedback are all graded. These discussion forums (Introduction = 5pts, Week 1 Discussion = 10pts, Week 8 Discussion = 5 pts) for a total of 20 points. Quizzes: Organization development is something of a science and those who aspire to more challenging leadership positions and/or corporate or community consulting should have some of the basic terminology and concepts committed to memory. I also use quizzes to make sure you are doing the reading BEFORE and not while completing case reports. There will be five multiple choice quizzes during the term. The quizzes are timed and designed to be difficult to complete while looking at the text. Again, the goal is to make sure you are reading for recollection. You will not be quizzed on trivial details, but instead on the main themes of the chapters. The 5 quizzes (weeks 2,3,4,5,6) are worth up to 20 points each, for a total of 100 points. Individual Case Reports: This is a graduate level course and graduate level work is expected. Five individual case reports must be 4-6 page (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font). You will submit your case report to the instructor Assignment Link. The FIVE case reports worth 20 points each are required for a total of 100 points. Case Report Discussions: You will also submit your individual case report paper to your group discussion board by the Monday following the due date. At this time, read all of the other group members submissions and evaluate and comment on the submission of at least two other individuals in your group. There should be one comment per individual peer (i.e., not everyone should comment on the first case report submission just to get it out of the way.comment for someone who has not received a
3 comment yet). Your comments must show your evolving understanding of organization development theory and MUST BE at least 100 words to get points. You will have until midnight Wednesday following the Sunday the assignment was due. Good job comments will not earn any points. You will earn 5 points by posting your paper in the discussion board each of the five weeks for a total of 25 points. There are 10 points per week for discussion of others efforts for a total of 50 points. Proposal Paper: As your final activity, use what you have learned in the course to develop a graduate level page (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) research/best practices grounded change process proposal for your organization, an organization of interest, or your community. Advanced Study Program students and others without much professional work experience may opt for analyzing a comprehensive case. Be sure to reference any outside sources using APA style. During Week 3 of course you will submit your idea for this project (worth 5 points). The Proposal Paper is a comprehensive activity is worth 100 points. Total Points/Grading Scale: There are 400 points available in the course. The traditional grading scale outlined in the college catalog will be utilized: % A 75 79% C D 85 89% B % C Below 60 F 80 84% B 65 69% D+ **Degree-seeking students shall maintain a grade point average of no less than 3.0 and a grade of C or higher in all courses on the Program of Study. A maximum of 6 hours of C will be accepted on the approved Program of Study. Students must re-take any course that received a grade below a C. General Comments on Assignments and Grading: The grading criteria used for each of these assignments are available in the Assignments folder. In general, attend to your writing. You will be graded as much on how you communicate as you will the thoughts you have to share. Generally, your final grade will be based on a straight percentage of the points earned to the total possible. Assignments submitted past the deadline do not earn points, unless there are extenuating circumstances communicated to the instructor. College s Incomplete Coursework Policy To designate a student s work in a course as incomplete at the end of a term, the instructor records the incomplete grade (I). Students may receive this grade only when serious illness, hardship, death in the immediate family, or military service during the semester in which they are registered prevents them from completing course requirements. In addition, to receive an incomplete, a student must have completed substantially all of the course s major requirements. Unless extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise, students must initiate requests for an incomplete by filling out an Incomplete Grade Completion Contract, which requires the signature of the student, instructor, and Dean. The Incomplete Grade Completion contract cites the reason(s) for the incomplete and details the specific obligations the student must meet to change the incomplete to a letter grade. The date
4 by which the student agrees to complete required work must appear in the contract. The Dean, the instructor, and the student receive signed copies of the Incomplete Grade Completion Contract. Even if the student does not attend Peru State College, all incomplete course work must be finished by the end of the subsequent semester. Unless the appropriate Dean approves an extension and if the student does not fulfill contract obligations in the allotted time, the incomplete grade automatically becomes an F. College s Academic Integrity Policy The College expects all students to conduct themselves in a manner that supports an honest assessment of student learning outcomes and the assignment of grades that appropriately reflect student performance. It is ultimately the student s responsibility to understand and comply with instructions regarding the completion of assignments, exams, and other academic activities. At a minimum, students should assume that at each assessment opportunity they are expected to do their own original academic work and/or clearly acknowledge in an appropriate fashion the intellectual work of others, when such contributions are allowed. Students helping others to circumvent honest assessments of learning outcomes, or who fail to report instances of academic dishonesty, are also subject to the sanctions defined in this policy. Instances of academic dishonesty may be discovered in a variety of ways. Faculty members who assign written work ordinarily check citations for accuracy, run database and online checks, and/or may simply recognize familiar passages that are not cited. They may observe students in the act of cheating or may become aware of instances of cheating from the statements of others. All persons who observe or otherwise know about instances of cheating are expected to report such instances to the proper instructor or Dean. In order to promote academic integrity, the College subscribes to an electronic service to review papers for the appropriate citations and originality. Key elements of submitted papers are stored electronically in a limited access database and thus become a permanent part of the material to which future submissions are compared. Submission of an application and continued enrollment signifies your permission for this use of your written work. Should an occurrence of academic misconduct occur, the faculty member may assign a failing grade for the assignment or a failing grade for the course. Each incident of academic misconduct should be reported to the Dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). The VPAA may suspend students for two semesters found to be responsible for multiple instances of academic dishonesty. The reason for the suspension will be noted on the student s transcript. A faculty member need present only basic evidence of academic dishonesty. There is no requirement for proof of intent. Students are responsible for understanding these tenets of academic honesty and integrity. Students may appeal penalties for academic dishonesty using the process established for grades appeals. 5 Accommodation Requests Students requesting reasonable accommodation and tutoring services should contact the Center for Achievement and Transition Services (CATS). Course Assignment Scheduling Details **Note: On due dates, assignments are due by midnight (CST). Keep the following information in mind: Case Reports that are submitted only to the instructor via the Assignment link (SafeAssign) within each weekly assignment folder can be submitted anytime during the week they are due, as long as they meet the deadline. Case Reports that are submitted to your group via the Group Discussion Board should not be submitted until the actual due date (Sunday) or one day after (Monday by noon) to ensure that group members do their own work. This alleviates the temptation to review peers work prior to completing one s own work. o Group discussion over case reports continues the week following their posting. For example, Case Report #1 is posted to the Group Discussion Board at the conclusion of Week 2; discussion continues throughout Week 3. Be sure to routinely check for peers questions and comments regarding your case report; this discussion should be HIGHLY INTERACTIVE the following week! Quizzes can be completed anytime during the week they are due, meeting the due date.
