2 Abstract 隨著網路的普及, 人們使用網路越來越頻繁, 漸漸地, 人們陷入網路的世界中不可自拔, 變得依賴網路, 而導致產生了一種症狀 - 網路成癮症, 然而, 網路的發明, 也帶給人們許多的便利, 任何資訊都可輕易在網路找到, 但因網路資訊太過廣泛, 往往都會隱含著色情 暴力等負面的資訊, 可能會引發心理 身理的問題, 其中我們知道青少年使用網路的頻率最高, 因此, 藉由這個專題, 我們將探討網路對青少年的正面影響 負面影響, 網路成癮的症狀, 及對青少年所做的關於網路使用的調查, 來了解網路對青少年的影響 With the popularity of the Internet, people use the Internet more and more frequently. Gradually, people fall into the world of Internet and cannot extricate themselves. They become rely on the Internet, and this results in a symptom - Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). However, the invention of the Internet also brings a lot of convenience. Any information can be easily found on the Internet, but the network information is too broad that often imply pornography, violence and other negative information. They may lead to psychological or physical problems. We know that teenagers using the Internet are the most frequently. Therefore, this project pruposes to understand the influence of Internet on Teenagers. We will explore the positive and the negative effects of the Internet on teenagers, the symptoms of the Internet Addiction Disorder, and a survey to the teenagers about the Internet use. i

4 I. Introduction I.1 Background of the Study In ancient time, it cost a plenty of time to go everywhere because the transportation was not very convenient. Therefore, it was difficult to exchange information between other countries. Nowadays, the communications are more and more convenient and rapid. For instance, like Yahoo message, s, video telephone, and so on. With the help of these inventions, the entire world becomes a global village. By using the Internet, people can play online games, go online shopping, watch videos, etc. Therefore, the Internet plays an important role in our lives. Especially for teenagers, they often use the Internet in their free time. Hence, in order to know the advantages and disadvantages of this convenient invention on teenagers, this theme was selected as our topic. I.2. Motivation of the Study Nowadays, the technology develops rapidly, and it results in the Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) on not only adults but also teenagers. Many teenagers spend most of their free time surfing the Net. Taking too much time on the Internet isn't a good thing at all. So we decide to discuss the influence of Internet to teenagers. I.3. Purposes of the Study With the advances in modern technology, the Internet is getting more and more important in lives. People no longer use messenger pigeons or write letters to connect with each other; instead, people use which can be more convenient and fast to send message to the other side. However, the more rapid the Internet develops, the more problems teenagers will face. Therefore, this project investigates the influence of Internet on teenagers. I.4. Research questions Nowadays, the Internet is becoming more common, and almost everyone at home has a computer and the Internet. The age of people to use the Internet is 1

5 gradually declining, but the frequency is rising. It is believed that the Internet also has more influences on teenagers. There are research questions in the following: 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet on teenagers? 2. If there is no Internet, what will bring to teenagers? 3. What are the reasons that teenagers are addicted to the Internet? II. Literature Review II.1 Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) Internet addiction disorder was originally proposed by Ivan Goldberg, MD in 1995 that is a kind of spiritual disorder. A clinical psychologist, Kimberley Young, PsyD, is a psychology assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh in America. She has written a thesis named Internet Addiction: The Emergence of a New Clinical Disorder. She did a conclusion that people can be addicted to the Internet, and this situation causes that more and more mental health practitioners concern about this. She said that this condition concludes that people only concentrate on the Internet, and they can t control themselves to stop surfing the Internet. If they attempt to reduce Internet using, they will be disquieted and temperamental. II.1.1 The Internet Addiction Disorder on teenagers The Symptom assessment can refer to Doctor Zhi-hong, Ke s clinical experience (2005), and the following are his diagnostic criteria: 1. They think about the Internet activities all day long. 2. They can t control the impulse of surfing the Internet. 3. They have sense of satisfaction only by spending longer time on the Internet. 4. If they become anxious, temperamental or emotional, they need to contact the Internet to remove. 5. The time that they spend on the Internet is always more than their original expectations. 6. They want to stop or reduce the Internet activities, but they always fail. 7. They spend most of time on surfing the Internet. 8. They will do everything they can do to get the opportunity to surf the Internet. 2

6 9. Even if they know the Internet has been caused themselves to have physical or psychological problems, they still keep surfing the Internet. 10. The school and family roles are affected. 11. The interpersonal relationship is affected. 12. They violate the law or school regulation. II.2 The positive effect on teenagers According to Chao-Shun Cheng and Fu-An s Tsou journal (2011), the following are their points to the positive effect of the Internet on teenagers: 1. Internet helps teenagers to widen the width of learning. The information that Internet provides surpasses the school and the society gave. 2. Internet can increase teenagers social interaction and feel satisfied. 3. They can buy things without going out but by the Internet. 4. In the ancient time, they can only send letters with the help of postmen; with the Internet they can send s. 5. They can meet their key pals on Internet instead of going out. 6. They can use the Internet to search some videos for knowing the secrets they don t know in order to fulfill their curiosity and demands. 7. They can simulate the interpersonal relationship of the society. 8. Internet can be used to search information, play games, listen to the music, chat with friends, and share their thinking. Those functions of the Internet can release their pressure. II.3 The negative effect on teenagers Umiker-Sebeok (1997) pointed out that the study found that Internet users by Young from elementary students to college students of different ethnic groups, and students after excessive using of the network are often accompanied by the following problems: 1. Face the difficulty of academic performance. 2. Get detention or get fired by employer. 3. They feel tired about going to school. 4. Have no motivation to study. 5. They are not interested in extracurricular activities. 6. Have trouble when they go to a date. 3

7 7. Their intimate relationships have some problems or cracks. 8. They don t want to go out with their classmates. 9. Spend more and more time on using the computer. 10. More intimate with E-pal than those friends on real life. 11. Regardless of negative result, they continuously use the Internet. III. Methods III.1. Participants People of all teenagers were chosen to participate in our research. Range is about from 12~24 years old. III.2. Instrument In order to know more about the effects of the Internet to teenagers, a questionnaire was designed. In addition, not only using the questionnaire but also reading some newspapers or magazines are as our references to know about the influences on teenagers. IV. Discussion IV.1. The questionnaires for teenagers According the chart, the participants are a range from 12 to 24, and all of them are teenagers, which show The Influence of Internet on Teenagers. V. Conclusion According to the literature, we not only knew teenagers can more easily have the Internet Addiction Disorder (AID) than people of other ages, but also fully realized symptoms of AID. Understand positive and negative impacts on teenagers. According to the results of the questionnaire, the reason that teenagers use the Internet is listening to music and watching movies most. But it may cause many infringement issues. Teenagers think that the disadvantage of network is that affect their schoolwork. Although they know it can affect their academic, actually they are still attracted the convenience of the Internet. However, the invention of the Internet is not just a negative impact. Because of the wide range of network information, allowing us more easily finds information without having to spend much of time looking for the books. The popularity of the Internet, though it caused a lot of phenomenon about Internet addiction, it also brings many conveniences to our lives. Not only for 7

11 teenagers, but also for other people of all ages are affected. All in all, parents should have strict discipline on teenagers about the frequency of using the Internet.
