Riverhead Athletics Mission Statement The Blue Waves Department of Athletics believes interscholastic athletics plays a major role in the educational process and strives to provide a challenging, meaningful and exciting experience for student-athletes... The coaching staff places the highest value on: Commitment - Integrity - Loyalty - Respect - Teamwork. In carrying out this mission, the department will strengthen the ability of Riverhead student-athletes to manage their lives and fulfill their potential: academically, athletically and as citizens.

Academic Eligibility and the Student-Athlete NYSPHSAA Commissioners Regulations A student reaching the age of 19 on or before July1st WILL NOT be eligible to participate in athletics for the remainder of his/her high school career The guidelines can be found at Additionally, we follow Section XI s regulation concerning minimum number of practices required before a student/or team becomes eligible for competition

Riverhead School District Co-curricular Policy ALL students are expected to pass all subjects Students in danger of failing two or more subjects may result in being placed on probation from the activity. Students failing 3 courses immediately become ineligible for participation. Participation in the Riverhead Athletic program is a privilege where

Students on Academic Probation Must Attend extra help throughout the probation period. Return contract signed by the parent/guardian, coach, guidance counselor, and the teacher of the course failed. The contract must be submitted to the appropriate building administrator. Eligibility status will be reassessed at the conclusion of the probationary period. Failure to comply will result in TERMINATION from the activity!!

Required Forms All mandatory forms will be distributed by the coaches at your parent meeting. Please make every effort to attend this informational meeting. Forms are available with your team Head Coach, or district website at

Riverhead High Athletics Code of Conduct We adhere to the Section XI student\spectator conduct policy. It can be viewed at:

Important Information Athletes must have appropriate medical clearance and permission slip completed prior to each sports season. Athletes are expected to attend all, tryout sessions, practices, meetings, and games. The coach must be notified of any extenuating circumstances or unexpected emergencies that would cause an absence. It is expected this information will be communicated by the parent to the coach. All coaches contact information can be found in the parent packet at the district website at To be eligible to participate in practice or games, an athlete must be in school at least 4 full class periods. If suspended, the student is ineligible to participate during that suspension. Students are expected to utilize district transportation for away contests.

The athlete is responsible for damaged/lost equipment. If taken to hospital or doctor for injury, a signed written release must be approved by the school district physician prior to any return to action. (Give to nurse, trainer/coach) Strict No Hazing Policy Due to Safety, facility consideration, student interest and Coaching effectiveness, some sports need to limit the number of athletes on their roster. Attendance is expected during team tryouts.

What can you do to make your child s high school athletic experience successful?

Parents are the single most influential people in a child s life. Encourage your child to set realistic goals for themselves and help them work towards achieving those goals (Academic, Social, and Athletic) Reinforce the concept of the Student-Athlete and the Blue- Waves commitment to excellence Assure that your child abides by the Athletic Code of Conduct and team rules as established by their coach. Assure that your child attends all scheduled practices and games

Take an active, supportive role- work cooperatively with other parents and school personnel to assure a wholesome and successful athletic program for our school Support child and team by attending games Be a positive role model to our children Promote sportsmanship Acknowledge the ultimate authority of the coach to determine strategy and player selection

What should we expect from the coach?

Coaches Expectations Expect the coach to have a fundamental knowledge of the sport and be a positive role model. Expect the coach to consider the individual needs of each student-athlete but to make final decisions based on the overall good of the team Expect the coach to provide you with at least one form of contact information and team schedule. (phone or )

Expect your child s coach to inform you: 1. When and where practices and games are held. 2. The expectations and requirements that he/she has for members of the team. (team rules and consequences for violating them) 3. If your child is injured in a game or practice. 4. Concerns or issues involving your child.

If you have a concern to discuss with a coach, what procedure should you follow? Follow chain of command. 1. Student-Athlete should talk with Coach first 2. If the issue/concern is not resolved, then the parent should contact the Coach 3. If issue/concern is not resolved, then the parent should contact the Athletic Director Always make an appointment with the coach. DO NOT approach a Coach before, during, or after a practice or game to discuss issue/concern.

Topics NOT to discuss with a Coach: 1. Team strategy or play calling 2. Other student-athletes

What if my child is injured?

Procedures for returning to an athletic contest after injury Any student who suffers injury requiring additional medical attention, (i.e. hospital, doctor) or illness (lasting more than 5 days) must be cleared for re-entry into the sport program. The student may be examined and treated for his/her injury or illness by his/her own physician. Upon recovery, the student shall present the SCHOOL NURSE and coach, documentation from the physician stating the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and the date on which the student may return to full participation. The school nurse will coordinate your appointment with the SCHOOL PHYSICIAN. The required re-evaluation must be signed by the SCHOOL PHYSICIAN and returned to the school nurse. If any injury or illness occurs at a time or location not associated with an interscholastic sport and the student has been examined and treated by his/her physician, or ER, a doctor s note will be required to re-enter the sports program.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD AND RIVERHEAD ATHLETICS!
