Postponement In the event of inclement weather, all TIC s will be contacted directly. It is the responsibility of individual schools to contact their athletes to inform them of any changes to the days programme. The postponement date is scheduled for Tuesday 18 November Health & Safety Information - Children are NOT permitted to leave the defined athletics area or school grounds unless accompanied by an adult and after having notified their school s Teacher in Charge; - Children are to be discouraged from playing on sports equipment (especially High Jump equipment) between events and during lunch time; - To assist with recording, all competitors must wear a name tag clearly stating their, name, age and school. (Included is a copy of one you may like to use); - A first aid volunteer will be available for all medical emergencies; - Be SUNSMART ; - Spiked shoes may be worn but starting blocks must be used. Competitors must provide their own starting blocks which must be ready for use by the start of their race. The spikes must be cone/pyramid or Xmas tree type (no needles or tartan) no longer than 7mm. Children can wear shoes or taped socks or have bare feet. Spikes may be used for high & long jump events for 10+ year events. We recommend shoes because of jarring, blisters & injuries; - Toilets are located behind the Hockey Turf (detailed on school map); - Parents are encouraged to park inside the school grounds in the parking area provided. Responsibilities A large number of staff and parents are required to assist with the running of the athletics. We rely on schools to provide adults to be responsible for various events. You will see that each school has been given various responsibilities below. I ask that you forward the names of staff and parents who will be helping, as soon as possible. It is up to each school to ensure there is adequate supervision to run the event otherwise an event may have to be cancelled. 2 If you or parents from your school are assisting on the day with recording, please ensure that recording sheets (these will be provided with the names of the children participating in each event) are returned to the Organiser s Table before leaving the event. The adults assisting with the events must be available for the full day and must be totally free from any obligation to a school team or supervision of children. Programme Competitors are expected to assemble on the athletics field no later than 9.20am. Running distance and relay races will start at 9.30am. They will be closely followed by the remaining track and field events. The competitors will rotate around each event in their age groups. Each round will take approximately 40 minutes. Finishing time is estimated to be approximately 2.00pm. Children and schools need to make sure they have something to eat during and between their events, rather than having a designated lunch break. Please ensure you are ready and waiting for the next group to arrive following this slot. Entry Information - as at 1 October Athletes must be 9 years or over, OR IN YEAR 5 on this date to be eligible to compete at the Primary Sports Canterbury Athletics Sports. - All athletes must compete in their own age group except in relay races where younger competitors may enter in an older age group if necessary. - Each school is permitted to enter a maximum of two boys and two girls for each age group in each event. Darfield Primary may enter one additional boy and girl in each age group. All entrants must have reached the qualifying standard at their school athletics to be entered. - RELAYS must be a school team i.e., all members of the same school, unless the 170 & under roll applies whereby schools with a combined roll of up to 170 may work together and enter. - Due to the tight time frame for getting entries into Canterbury and the fact that every Malvern spot in the Canterbury Athletics format is precious, all 1st place athletics on the day will be asked if they are available to attend the Primary Sports Canterbury Athletics on Wednesday 3 December We ask schools to remind athletes that they will need to know there availability for the Canterbury on the day of the Malvern Sports. - All schools are to use this spreadsheet to enter competitors. To do so please enter the competitors full name in the appropriate age space provided. TAKE YOUR MARKS runners line up at least two steps behind the start line. On the command take your marks runners move up to the start line, one foot forward one foot back and must not then move their feet. Front toe should be up to the line but not on or over it. Runners will be held in this position until all are still and there is no movement. 2. BANG start Note: Distance events will begin in split lanes and combine as the race progresses. Sprint Races Races will not be timed Standing start Starting commands: 1. TAKE YOUR MARKS runners line up at least two steps behind the start line. On the command take your marks runners move up to the start line, one foot forward one foot back. Front toe should be up to the line but not on or over it. Feet must not move from this position until the start signal is given. Knees should be bent, body leaning slightly forward but still quite upright, opposite arm forward to front foot (ie if right foot is up to the line, then left arm should be forward and right arm back), head looking forward. Runners will be held in this position until they are still and there is no movement. 2. SET on the command set runners should lower their body position and lean forward from the hips in a lower driving position. 3. BANG start 4. Second BANG or double whistle (False start by starter. Go back to 1). Note: The One start rule at Canterbury i.e., One false start BY AN INDIVIDUAL (which includes moving the feet after take your marks ) means automatic disqualification will not be applied at Malvern. Children who finished in a top 4 placing must report to the recorder s desk at the end of the race to have their details recorded. Once the recorders have collated each child s results for heat races they must advise them to report back down to the start line immediately. Heats and one final will be run for age group 8-11 yrs. Straight finals will be run for children aged yrs. Relays Races will not be timed Standing Start Starting commands: As per Sprint Races Each school may enter one team in each gender per age group (max two teams). Each team will have 4 runners. Boys and girls will run in separate lanes. 4 High Jump 1. Jumping is from one foot only. Dives or forward rolls off two feet are not allowed. 2. Only scissor jumping is allowed. A jumper may land on both feet, their bottom, or their back (see Run Jump Throw manual), providing the leg goes over the bar first. 3. A failure is: (a) knocking off the bar; (b) touching the top of the pads when no jump is attempted; (c) knocking the uprights over; (d) using any jump other than a scissor jump. 4. A jumper is eliminated after two failures at any one height. Spikes may be used for 10+ years. 5. Getting off the mat before the bar falls is not automatically a successful clearance. Placement of jumping mat (taken from front of white to front of pit): 8, 9, 10 yrs 1.5m, 11, 12yrs 2m, 13+yrs from white board or off white sector on mat. 5. Measurement of a jump is taken from the front of the colour that the athlete takes off from. The competitor must NOT lift the shot up or away from the shoulder and throw it. (This aspect is to be strictly enforced). 5 Discus 1. Each competitor is to have at least two throws. 2. The discus thrower must leave the circle from the rear half otherwise a no throw is declared. 3. The discus thrower must not touch the ground outside the circle during his throw otherwise a no throw is declared. 5. Competitors must be able to throw 12 metres (11 & under) or 15 metres (12 & over). Co-ordination Event controllers are to organise their own assistants to run their events. They need to familiarise themselves with the event rules. All event rules need to be strictly adhered to, to avoid any confusion. All queries or disputes need to be sent directly to the Teacher-in-Charge. Protests All protests or complaints must be made to the Teacher-in-Charge within 30 minutes of the occurrence. All protests shall be considered by a delegation of Principals present on the day and their decision is final. Additional Health and Safety Documentation A map of the school grounds has been included in the package along with a Risk Management plan.
